Today, I arrived at approximately 7:45 AM and waited outside the building until the doors opened at 8:00 AM. After entering, I sat in a chair for about 30 minutes with my children. My son was fasting because he needed blood work, and I was also there to drop off a specimen at the lab. I was trying to manage everything while also being concerned about getting to work on time.
After waiting, I noticed that people who arrived after me were already being helped and taken inside. I went to the front desk and politely asked one of the employees why my name had not been called yet. There were two women at the front desk, and I spoke directly with one of them.
I explained my situation calmly and respectfully. I told her that my son was fasting, that I needed to drop off his specimen, and that I was already running late for work. I told her that if necessary, I had no problem coming back another day to have my son's blood work done. I was simply asking for information and trying to figure out the best way to handle the situation.
Instead of responding with basic courtesy, the employee spoke to me in what I felt was a very rude, dismissive, and disrespectful manner. She told me that I should just drop off the specimen and come back another day for my son's blood work. Her tone and attitude were completely unnecessary.
I did not argue with her. I simply said, "Okay, thank you. I will do the drop-off and come back another day for the blood work."
When I went into the room to complete the specimen drop-off, a nurse came in and noticed that I also needed lab work. The nurse was very kind, patient, and professional. I explained to her that I was already late for work and that I had planned to do the drop-off and return another day for the blood work. She kindly told me that since I was already there, she would try to take care of it and that it should not be a big problem.
I really appreciated the nurse's attitude because she treated me with understanding and respect. She was trying to help me rather than make the situation more difficult.
Unfortunately, the same front-desk employee then came into the room in a very rude and abrupt manner. She spoke to the nurse and told her that the blood work was not supposed to be done and that only the specimen drop-off was supposed to be completed. The way she entered the room and spoke about the situation was uncomfortable and, in my opinion, completely unnecessary.
I then asked her directly why she was being so rude to me. I had spoken to her politely from the beginning. I was not yelling, arguing, or demanding special treatment. I was simply trying to understand what was happening and explain my circumstances.
What makes this experience even more frustrating is that I have been coming to this same lab location many times, and I have experienced the same type of rude behavior from this employee on previous visits. This is not an isolated incident for me. I have repeatedly felt uncomfortable because of the way I have been spoken to and treated by her.
I understand that medical laboratories can be very busy, especially in the morning. I also understand that employees have procedures they must follow. However, being busy does not give anyone a reason to speak to patients in a disrespectful or dismissive manner. A patient should be able to ask a simple question without being made to feel like they are causing a problem.
I especially found the difference between the front-desk employee and the nurse very noticeable. The nurse was calm, kind, patient, and willing to help me find a solution. That is the type of professionalism and compassion I would expect from a healthcare facility.
I am asking management to please take this complaint seriously and look into this employee's repeated behavior toward me. I would appreciate it if management reviewed what happened today and addressed the situation appropriately.
I am not asking for special treatment. I am asking for basic respect and professional communication when I come to the lab with my children for medical services.
I hope management will take this feedback seriously and ensure that patients and their families are treated with courtesy, patience, and respect in the future. I also want to recognize the nurse who helped me today. She was kind and professional, and I truly appreciated her willingness to help me during a stressful morning.
My concern is specifically with the repeated behavior of the front-desk employee. After multiple experiences of being treated this way, I believe it is important to speak up and make management aware of what is happening.
