If you are in need of amazing Mexican food, where every single dish is hand made on the spot for you, then Antojitos Nuevo Leon is the place to go. It is out of the way a bit, in Mt Vernon up College Way heading out of town on the corner of Martin Rd and College way, I can promise you it is worth the trip. I have been to every single Mexican restaurant in Mt Vernon and Burlington, and there are a ton. A couple pretty good, Some okay, some not so okay, i have always found them to be pretty much the same, pool of beans, rice and a cheese covered "Something else". The food seems to always taste the same in the big places, not sure what the difference is between any of them. I absolutely love Mexican food but have never found what I was looking for until I visited Antojitos Nuevo Leon. Everything is fresh, hand made corn tortillas that are thick and warm, made right then for your meal. There are hand made hot sauces, Sopas, Tortas and on and on. Think about this, what type of restaurant ALWAYS gets the disclaimer from the server that "please be careful the plate is REALLY hot..." Mexican places, why is that? Ever wondered? At Antojitos Nuevo Leon there is no scalding hot plate, no warnings... yet the homemade refried beans have melted cheese, the rice is cooked to perfection...the Enchiladas or burritos or whatever you order with them is cooked to perfection...no heat lamps, no microwaves nothing "fake" here. I have been coming at least 2 times a week since I found it, more if I can get there...it is that good. This is the only place I have ever found Tacos a la Plancha in the area and they are my addiction, any of the meats they prepare are delicious in them, Pork, Asada or chicken, different types of each are all really good...quite frankly I just can't get enough of them!!
The owners are wonderful people, friendly genuine people who treat you like old friends. The chef was born with creative "kitchen" magic, he says he has no formal training but the dishes he creates are amazing. Nothing fancy, no "pretty" food...this is home cookin' that will make you smile. He takes your order, heads back to the kitchen and in no time brings out mouth watering dishes that will knock your socks off. The first time I ordered the burrito I thought he was bringing me a Presto log it was so big, delicious...every single thing I have had so far, I am trying to work through the whole menu and it is a joyous trip indeed.
The prices are beyond reasonable and the restaurant is very tidy and well kept. This is one of those rare gems that you want to see succeed and hope the owners do well, it doesn't have the neon signage or the traditional Spanish looking building to lure people in, in fact it is in a tiny strip mall like building and you might zip right by if you weren't looking. Mt Vernon and Burlington are lucky enough to have a few wonderful little places like this that serve real quality food for fair prices, places that deserve a visit to try the food.
Give Antojitos Nuevo Leon a try, see what the real deal should taste like. I bet it will be the start of regular visits. :) read more
