Had I been allowed I may have stayed for many, many more -- but luckily I needed some food and thus was saved from myself. Highly recommend those Trouble Brewing beers that went down a treat: Sabotage IPA (a big old growler of a bottle) and then the Gold on draught, things are getting fuzzy, but I liked it even better than the IPA (pics below). I'm not really a huge beer drinker but was feeling it last night and Anseo delivered. Comfy, cozy, welcoming, space to sprawl, clean loos, tons of beer. What else might one need? Colleen? Anseo. A little bit of Hipster magic on one of Dublin's booziest streets. The best way to describe Anseo is that it is a pub that has been around for 50+ years but never got an upgrade. It's dark, cool (temperature wise) & slightly uncomfortable. But I would imagine these conditions is on purpose and keeps away your likely snobby cocktail bar crowd. The bar staff are very friendly and helpful. They have live DJ music on a Friday/ Saturday and the crowd is always good on the weekend. The best thing about Anseo is their craft beer selection- you name it, they probably have it! They also have a decent size tv in the corner should you want to catch a game. During the week its quiet if you want to grab a after work beer. P.s rumour has it an Irish actor who stars on G.O.T happens to frequent this bar also. read more

Anseo hits that sweet spot between being drop dead trendy and pretentious. Effectively, it's the Bernard Shaw for people who aren't out to prove anything. Good tunes, nice atmosphere and a varied selection of drinks that you won't find in many other pubs. The only criticism you could have of Anseo is that it's too popular. In the midst of inebriated conversation last week it surfaced that I was sadly in the dark about a very important genre of pub - the 'Dive Bar'. My American friend was horrified that my life had so far been unenriched with the joys the dive bar can bring to one's life, and resolved to take me to his favourite dive bar right then and there. The dive in question happened to be Anseo. And when we got there I was like 'um, yeah, it's a bar...' So I'm sorry guys, I still don't understand the difference between a dive bar and a regular bar. Apparently it's something about the 'lived-in' feel of the dive, that it could be your living room (albeit with a very extensive spirits collection and some nifty apparatuses that enable you to pour your beer straight from the tap). Is it something to do with the fact that it is dimly lit, seems to not have seen a spray and wipe in a few years and is filled with a bunch of guys who all know each other? Ok, well if that's a dive bar, I get it now... Needless to say, my first (knowing) experience of a dive bar was a good one. Through the haze of one-too-many Galway Hookers I got to know the bar, the vibe, and the people who choose Anseo as their local dive bar haunt. A note to the (fellow) dive bar uninitiates: don't ever start a fight with a dive bar regular. You WILL be asked to leave and never return. Not that this happened to me of course... All the reviews will be the same for this pub I think. It's like a small country Irish pub was alien abducted from the sticks and dropped in the middle of Dublin. Have only been in here at the w'end and I can concur with my fellow reviewers that the place is wedged! Not sure what the policy is for official fire numbers but lets just say that there probably isn't enough open space or fresh oxygen in the place for a fire to start. Can't even remember if there was anybody on the door watching the numbers going in and out. Low ceilings, great pints, loud but if you're looking for a seated position forget about it. I'd say start your night here early and work on into town from here. P.S. Anseo used to be Con's Pub but is now under new management. read more

Wonder why I haven't written a review for Anseo before?! It's a really nice spot. A bit dark and dingy but also kinda cosy at the same time. It's laid back, massively so, with gig posters on the walls, and a kind of an older student vibe. It's friendly and unassuming and the kind of place you head into for one pint and stay for about ten. Just cos it's easy. They have a great craft beer selection, though course I'm not the craft beer expert, but I can say the wine I had in there was lurvely and much nicer than I'd have expected. It'd be cool if they did some type of sustenance. Maybe some whopper toasted cheese sambos or something. Either way, I'm all for it! Getting stood up is never fun. Getting stood up by a friend that 'assumed I was with another friend' is a slappable offence, which I did to him later. The plus was I got to enjoy the atmosphere of the bar on my todd. It was around 7pm so not jammers. Lot's of foreign students having pints, I expect that they come from the language centre across the road. Real Dubs with their husky voices and multitude of cursing and their child that ran back from the loo to shout out proudly, 'I did a BIG POO.' I should of clapped in his celebration. The music was reggae. Somehow sitting at the bar nursing my vodka and tonic felt very natural in it's surroundings. read more

I stopped in here for a drink the other night before a gig in Whelan's. It was around 7pm, the perfect time to stop by as Anseo always seems to very busy by later on in the night. They serve a range of craft beers and all of the usual suspects as well. The bar staff were friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed and casual. The soft seats are really, really comfortable and I enjoyed the low key music that was being played. All in all, this is a nice place to come earlier in the evening. The drinks aren't the cheapest but hey, you can't have everything. read more

I speak the truth on my reviews, so it's not like I have Bi - Polar, I'd always say choose the Cusack Stand as opposed to this dive. Ok, so that bars not pretty, but the people are! I have always had a bit of a soft spot for this place since I first started going in college to hear friends play in the itsy-bitsy venue upstairs. Its a wee bit dingy decor wise, but the music is good and the drinks are cold. It's as cheap as any bar in the Camden St area, but I really love the relaxed atmosphere for getting everyone together before setting off on a night of dancing and debauchery in Whelans. read more

Anseo is exactly the sort of place that I would hate, but for some reason I just can't. Every time I'm in there the choons are good and no one seems to be wearing spandex and sunglasses indoors, thus allowing it to skirt the line that the Bernard Shaw drew in the sand so many moons ago. I´ve there two Wednesdays, for the comedy club upstairs. The first one was amazing, the second was ok, but don´t forget it is a free entry comedy club done by amateurs: best of intentions and motivation. Surprising that many people choose a comedy club jam for the first date and sit in the first row (that is the hardest test for a budding love, if it survives will be endless or maybe longer...). I liked as well the DJ after the comedy club, like almost 90% of the DJ´s he mades funny movements by playing records but he has a good selection of classical rock and roll with some soul. A tip: don't speak to him, believe me, just consider him as his job for the purpose of a pub visit. Did you know that Anseo it pronounced like an (like an in Anthony) and shoo (like in shock), it is an Irish word and it means ... Anseo used to be my local Friday night pub when I worked over that side of the city. Its a small pub with a real Irish feel and thats why I'm drawn to it. Can be difficutl to get served when busy so I would only stay for one or two, its not the place to spend your entire Friday or Saturday night. If you are looking for a top pint of Guinness then look no further than Anseo, they pour it better than anywhere else, believe it or believe it not, it was the first place I ever had one. read more

So far my favorite bar in Dublin. It's got the right vibe for a laid back pint with friends. The music is amazing. DJ spinning some funk, keeping it upbeat and fun. The bar is pretty small, but enough room to breath for most of the night. Have stuck to the Guinness, but they have a good selection of beers on tap, in bottles and alcohol. At weekends Anseo becomes the opposite of a quiet and cosy destination when it's two floors fill up with energetic party-people ready for some... partying! With amazing DJs calling the tunes every weekend, Anseo is always packed on Friday and Saturday nights. So packed that you might need to run over to a nearby pub to use the toilet, or breathe fresh air. But that's the whole appeal. Camden Street has a fair share of pubs, this one falls right into the middle. Nothing very special, but nothing bad to point out either. They have a decent selection of drinks, and I got to enjoy one of my whiskeys of choice. The live DJ is a great touch, gives it a much cooler vibe. All and all I would qualify it as a good place to go if you want to enjoy the company you're in and not have the place distract you. read more

I like bars. A lot. I have visisted 1021 different bars all over the world since I started counting in May 2005. The beauty is that if, like me, your thing is writing about bars, you get to sit in pubs and get drunk and you can call it research. If you visit as many bars as I do, you start to notice similarities in certain things. Irish pubs in the USA, for example, are generally closer to the Real Thing than in, say, Belgium or Budapest. This is most likely down to the fact that half the population of the USA claims some sort of Irish heritage, but they do it really well. I once visited a regular (=non-Irish) bar in Melbourne, Australia and somehow could not get over the fact that I had the feeling that I'd been there before even though I was 100% sure that I hadn't. I finally realized what it was when I looked at the menu and noticed that it was exactly the same as in a bar where I'd been the day before and found that they had the same owner. They didn't look the same at a first glance, but they FELT the same. And that brings me, in a roundabout way, to my first ever visit of Anseo. When I walked into the place, I had a look around and instantly got the feeling that I had been there before. I had a couple of beers that night, mulling over why it looked so familiar, but I just couldn't put my finger on it. I liked the place. It has a decent selection of whiskeys and craft beers (and non-craft ones but I think you are supposed to deride that in Dublin these days for the risk of being called a Guinness sipping old fart). The music is decent and the bar has a nice worn in feel. Not a straight up dive, really, but in that direction. Comfy seats and a long bar complement the dark atmosphere and you can really feel at home there quite soon. But I could never get over that nagging idea of having been there before. It drove me mad. I looked through old notebooks with bar notes, in search of a clue but I couldn't find one. I looked online to see if the bar might be part of a chain or a bigger group of pubs, but all to no avail. Months later, I was browsing through some old holiday pictures of a trip to California from a couple of years earlier and it finally hit me. Anseo is a near-perfect carbon copy of the Edinburgh Castle bar on Geary Street in San Francisco. The tables to the left of the door, the long bar, the seats towards the back, the bookshelves. It was striking. I hurried back to Anseo the next day with my picture in hand and showed it to the bar man, who was as surprised by it as I was. The manager told me that he had never heard of the place in San Francisco before, let alone modelled his bar on it. It was one of the most striking cases of 'would you believe that' I've ever encountered. Fortunately for you, good people of Dublin, you don't have to spend 11 hours on a plane to see it. I love Anseo, its one of my favourite bars in Dublin. Its hard to say why exactly-I just feel really comfortable here. Its small-ish and always very busy on a Fri&Sat night, when they usually have a DJ playing a big mix of tunes-not mainstream but not ear melting, a nice mix. The bar staff are friendly & professional, they care about their service and product-or at least aren't totally ambivalent. The white wine is nice, cold and its the sort of place that if you sent back your glass because it wasn't clean (ahem maybe I might possibly do this a lot), they would be polite & not fazed. Crowd is a mix, alternative but not extremely so. The type of place where you could wear converse or stilettos. And the toilets are fine! They have 2 cubicles and have always been pretty clean when Ive been there. They do have a loo upstairs too which is grottier. They also have an upstairs area but it is usually rented out for a private party. They have a fair few seats for a small place & they are couch's/stools. Types of people I have overheard/been chatting to in here: country types with neutral accents(like me!), Real Dubs with their dog, Alternative southsiders, after work suits, English students dressed in drag, people allergic to Flannerys, everyone and anyone. This is one of my favourite places in Dublin hands down, whether it be for a night out, after work drinks or a mellow Sunday pint I can always rely on the Anseo to provide the goods. Music and the mix of DJ's is awesome and keeps things fresh. Love that it seems so cool and stylish at night and can then be transformed into a good ole fashioned ole man's pub in the day. One of my favourite aspects here is the staff- take note Bernard Shaw- they are welcoming, good humoured, cool and never take themselves too seriously. Love a bar that can retain its staff, always a good sign I think. There is always a nice mix of people young and old and occasionally some tourists who have read up about where is "cool" to go in Dublin and this comes up on the search apparently! Anseo is a small, grungy bar with decent tunes, an eclectic selection of imported beers (both bottled and on tap), and a friendly crowd. There's definitely a regular contingent here who consider themselves locals, but there's also an assorted mix of first-timers, students, restaurant goers waiting for tables in Green 19 next door, and foreigners, as the name Anseo seems to attract tourists who think the Irish name denotes a traditional Irish bar with some diddley-ai-dai music, but you won't find much of that here. The walls are plastered with new and old posters advertising gigs and arts events, and the lighting is very very dim, which I love in a pub. The seats are old and sagging, with a distinctly beery whiff, but it all adds to the atmosphere. Upstairs is just like a dingy student sitting room, and is thus, unsurprisingly, very popular with students who are sick of their own sitting rooms. read more

I really like this bar, good atmosphere and great selection of beers and wine. It could do with a bit of a makeover or even just a good scrub. I don't wanna sound like an old man but I was there on Saturday night and the music was way too loud. There was a large group of us out for a birthday and would have been nice to be able to talk to more than one person at a time but it was impossible! Most of us left early and moved on for this reason which is a pity. I'll obviously be back but just wanted to say about the music. read more

This drinking hole is teeny tiny and hasn't been refurbished in oh, quite some time - but you gotta love it. During the week it's a really nice snug to catch up with a friend over a pint (I haven't had a bad pint on draught there yet).
