After finally locating some spoons for us, we dug in. The banana/wafer ratio was good, the pudding was more of a mousse than pudding texture but it was still enjoyable. The other room had the bar and the band setup. It was very lively in there. We started with drinks. I was so happy that they had my favorite Pinot Noir - Meomi. We had an appetizer pizza. Wow- great pizza! Afterwards I had the veal Milanese. Paul had the veal Francese. This was a wonderful dinner and service. This is a fairly new restaurant in town and they are working hard to please. I'm impressed that they even had the entertainment during this summer season when less people are here. But this is what draws in the people. Our server was also the bartender, and while the service itself was fine, unfortunately the food and overall experience were very disappointing. I ordered the appetizer portion of sausage and broccoli rabe. The dish was overcooked, extremely dry, and had virtually no liquid or sauce. I sent it back, expecting that the kitchen would address the problem. Instead, I was given what appeared to be the exact same dish with liquid simply added to it. Really? The food was already overcooked and dry--adding liquid to the dish does not fix the underlying problem. I found that response particularly disappointing and unacceptable. I then ordered the eggplant rollatini, which was also disappointing. It was heavily overbreaded and simply not very good. There was also an issue with the specials. I overheard another waiter explaining the specials to a different customer, so I asked the hostess whether there were any specials. She said yes. We told her that no one had mentioned them to us. The bartender then came over and went through the specials with us. We explained that it would have been nice to hear about the specials before we ordered, not after we had already placed our order. If specials are being offered, they should be communicated consistently to all customers. I have been a regular customer here for quite some time, which is why I feel compelled to say something. Something has clearly changed, and unfortunately, I feel that the quality of the food has been going downhill. This visit was not just a minor disappointment--the quality of both dishes, the way the first dish was handled when I sent it back, and the lack of communication about the specials all contributed to a very underwhelming experience. At this point, I can honestly say that I will definitely not be coming back. That is very disappointing to say as someone who has been a regular customer, but the quality and overall experience have declined to the point where I no longer feel it is worth returning. The legal entity behind it still carries the WhatSub name. That matters because the similarities don't end with the address. Compare the menus. Monica's Tuscan and WhatSub's Roman Empire share the same six ingredients: pecorino, Swiss, capicola, spianata romana, arugula and honey. Monica's Colosseum matches WhatSub's Fully Loaded on seven of eight ingredients. Monica's Roma Rosa and WhatSub's Buto pair chicken cutlet, tomato-cream sauce, pesto and fresh mozzarella. Monica's Turkey and WhatSub's Turkey W/Style share turkey, provolone, roasted red peppers, lettuce, tomato, mayo and olive oil. Even names echo: Milanese/Milano and Genovese/Genoa. I'm excluding the mortadella combination popularized by All'Antico Vinaio and generic sandwiches like chicken parm. Even then, nine distinctive builds closely line up. Overall, I count close WhatSub counterparts for 12 of Monica's 15 fixed sandwiches. Any one similarity could be coincidence. That many similarities, in the storefront intended for WhatSub, operated by an LLC still bearing the WhatSub name, is difficult for me to dismiss. There's also a public-interest question. The Boynton Beach CRA offers businesses in its district financial incentives that can include rent reimbursement and matching build-out grants. If public funds helped establish this location as a WhatSub, residents deserve clarity about what changed. Antonio Spadaro spent years developing WhatSub's concept and customer following. I'm not making a legal judgment about recipes, intellectual property or trade dress. My judgment as a customer is simpler: Monica's appears to have reproduced a substantial portion of a local competitor's concept, and I can't support that.
