The Annex is one of the last old-school comic shops left in the state, and the only one on Aquidneck island. I have been coming here since the mid-1990's and it looks pretty much the same as it did back then. The store has a little bit of everything, from new comics and back issues to trade paperbacks, dvds and games like Magic, Pokemon, etc. The store is somewhat cluttered, but in a good way, as I am always able to spend an hour or so looking through boxes of comics, books and dvds and always walk out with a good deal on something. The owner Wayne is one of my favorite comic shop owners and will always go out of his way if someone is looking to special order a comic, book or movie. I've noticed that he is also very active on Facebook posting daily updates on what is happening at the store. - Definitely worth the trip if you are visiting Newport! read more

Nice selection of dvds! I went here in the late eighties and early nineties for comics and baseball cards. Now I'm back in the hood, in need of cinema! This place is a gem. Wayne is a great guy with amazing taste in movies. The prices are fair and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for physical media and a touch of nostalgia. read more

This is an odd place. I read the other yelp reviews and thought that sometimes you find good deals and hidden gems at messy shops. So I thought I'd give this a try. I don't mind digging through old boxes. When I walked in I noticed what all the other reviews mentioned. There was trash throughout the store. Just straight littering inside the store. Looks like a place someone started building but never finished. There's a wall of NCBD and some boxes sprinkled throughout the store. I looked through them and it was all .50 cent type of books but with no prices on them. All filler books. Most boxes were just empty. I asked the guy working there if they had any bigger key issues and he said not usually, if anything big comes in they put it on eBay, not the store. Then why have a store? I didn't find anything worth buying even though I looked for a while. To be fair, the gentleman behind the counter was very nice. I just don't understand why he'd have a half empty store and the only part that is full has nothing but filler. He also had some regular books and DVDs. Altogether this felt more like a yard sale than a comic book shop. If you are looking for NCBD this is your spot though! read more

I was pleased with the selection of curren issues and series. The store is definitely a bit disorganized but if you like digging, finding cheap and random back issues, and just being in a small, LCS then it's worth a trip. read more

This place is a disaster. There are piles of crap everywhere. There is NO organization whatsoever. Long boxes, short boxes piled everywhere! Not marked and often impossible to get to. The place is beyond cluttered. There is trash on the floors. No pride of ownership or even the most basic attempt to make the customer experience pleasant. Not really a shop at all but more a dirty disorganized storage room for an eBay seller. Stay away. read more

I've been reading comic books since I learned how to read. I've been to a lot of comic book stores in my time. Some are good, some are bad, and a rare few are truly capital-G Great. Annex, on the other hand, might be the worst I've ever set foot into in my life. How a store in 2013 can look this way and remain in business is beyond me. It's cavern-like in its darkness, there's stuff EVERYWHERE covering every conceivable surface (reminding me of the line from Friends about having to move the pile of garbage to get to the pile of garbage), and most of the boxes look like they have been through floods, vermin infestation, or some combination of both that I can only envision as giant rats whose bodies are made of swirling vortices of living water. On the plus side, I guess, they did have a wide selection of new & recent releases on the wall. And the guy working behind the counter was happily engaged in conversation with a few customers (though he did not, I noticed, address me - a potential new customer - in any way as I walked in), so apparently someone's happy to be there. Good for them, I guess? Obviously, I will not be going back, and I cannot recommend in good conscience that anyone else go, either. Barring surly people playing Magic: The Gathering and ignoring all attempts at commerce, this was nearly every negative stereotype of a comic book store brought together in one place, with those very negatives apparently magnified as if to make up for the seemingly pleasant (and oddly oblivious to their surroundings) demeanor of those inside. It has to be the fact that it's the only comic shop in the Newport/Middletown/Bristol area that is keeping this place in business. I cannot imagine any other reason. read more

This place has low reviews, I don't know why. Only place in newport that sells complete sets of comics that aren't over priced compared to Barnes and Noble. I love black canary, and I was able to find most of the series here. Only things is I wish it carried more local artwork by artists and Funko Pop characters. Otherwise is a great way to support your local business. Epically when you have a daughter that loves wonderwoman and others of the justice league. read more

Clerk was attentive and considered my query about purchasing comics for someone. He made sure to get me only those starting with the first editions; so the story could be followed. I expected to take a long time making the purchase because I don't know that much about comics and it was quick and efficient. I will definitely be a repeat customer. read more

I had to write in defense of The Annex, the only remaining comic book store in the region, with a track record going back decades. It is a great place to get your action figures, comics and graphic novels. Yes, they carry rare movies, too, and are the only store in the area to do so. The owner has an encyclopedic knowledge of comics and movies, is usually extremely friendly and helpful, all I can think is that perhaps he was busy when these people visited. The Annex is involved in supporting local artists and the local arts community as well as mentoring young people interested in the arts. I wish people wouldn't be so facile in their reviews, if they had looked a little deeper they might have been very pleasantly surprised at the interaction. read more

This was place was frightening. It was dark and cold with just one flickering fluorescent light. I didn't want to go in but my partner was feeling adventurous and I didn't want him to go alone. There were piles of stuff everywhere but it was hard to figure out what was what. I didn't see one graphic novel or action figure in the whole place but lots of weird used DVDs completely unrelated to comics. The vintage comic books seemed to be covered by a piece of plywood so you really couldn't look at them. And there was a man sitting behind a computer monitor who never acknowledged our presence. Avoid this place at all costs. I'm pretty sure it's a portal to hell. read more

This place is FILTHY, how can anywhere in 2016 look like this. It's insane. I wanted to take a shower after I left, and I wanted to leave the whole time. The people were iffy at best only paying attention to when you were paying or doing something wrong (which was a lot as there were no markings / warnings anywhere). Speaking of warnings I warn anyone who goes here. If you are in desperate need of a comic, walk quickly, keep your head down, and try not to breathe to much, if you enjoy feeling like trash have a field day, and if you actually want to have a quality experience AVOID AT ALL COSTS read more
