Food: pizza is really good. Specialty slice of Hawaiian is favorite. Steak and cheese is better than average. I wish they'd put the lettuce tomato and mayo on after they heat the steak and cheese on the bun. Onion rings are not worth ordering, soft and really greasy, so oil isn't hot enough and they're getting dunked when frozen. Service: terrific. Nice guys. Always responsive. Ambience: ok. Stopped in with a large group after a UNC basketball game. You order at the counter and they'll bring the food to your table. Besides pizza, it looks like they have calzones, strombolis and pasta dishes. The food was decent and this seems like a reliable pizza joint but if you're looking for more upscale pizza, Chapel Hill and Carrboro have plenty of options. I tried this place because of the positive reviews. I ordered a NY Sausage Stromboli. What I got was a bread roll with some cheese and exactly TWO pieces of sausage and THREE pieces of pepper. I love this place. I would classify it as a "hole in the wall" pizza place with great sandwiches and daily lunch specials. I can get two deluxe pizza slices for under 8.00 and the portions are HUGE. They are friendly and once you order your slices, they'll bring it to you. They always treat local teachers with extra kindness. I'm a sucker for their vegetarian pizza options. Dishonest staff. Avoid take-out ordering at all cost. We called in for a large cheese pizza. Not complicated, right? Guy says 20 min but doesn't take our name. We show up and he claims "he never got our order; what number did you call?" Show him the i-Phone and his number matches the one we called. He says "well I don't have a large pizza for you--never got your order." WTF?! Guy in line two people in front of us is sitting down with three cheese slices. Sadly this used to be one of my favorite places...but sadly it has gone downhill very fast. The pizza isn't as fresh or good as it used to be and the prices for stuff is so high now and specially compared to other pizza places in town like carrboro pizza oven is delicious and IP3 is way better and each slice of pizza is made fresh not heated up. They need a new look a boost of moral and better customer service the owners or workers there are pretty rude and don't have customers service talent like they should. We have been getting pizzas here for years, but last night was the last time. While eating his 3d slice of pepperoni pizza, our 14 yo son found a roach in the pizza. This was bad enough, but almost as bad was the way my husband was treated by the staff at Anna Maria's when he took the pizza and roach back to Anna Maria's to alert them and, we would have expected from any business, to get our $40 back. Instead of apologizing or refunding our money, the two attendants vehemently (and surlily) denied that there were or had ever been, roaches on the premises. When my husband insisted that our order did indeed have a roach in it, and that if they did not at least refund our order, he would spread the word, they threatened that he "had better be careful" what he said. When he got home, I looked up their health inspection reports online at NC Public Health Inspections. Current grade is 91.5 (lowest in two years). Reports for 7/18/12 and 9/4/13 show roaches present, among multiple serious food safety infractions. Prudent and food safety conscious eaters will want to find better places to have pizza. read more

Anna Maria, I miss ya! I used to live about a 1/4 mile from the place and be a regular customer. Boy was I happy when I found Anna Maria's because it's real italian food! They do a very nice NJ style pizza which to me means a bit more cheese and a bit thicker crust than NY style but still damn good. What I don't get is the comments about the subs not being good because they are awesome too. I fell in love with the chicken/veal parmigian which is heavenly. A nice sized sub, with breaded meat, wrapped up in nice marinara sauce and melting cheese, wow! You are missing out if you don't try that bad-boy... Decor is basic pizzeria style: formica tables, self-serve drinks, some neon signs and a couple of TV's with ESPN. Staff is very nice, it's a family run restaurant from NJ. So you can say the place is authentic. They also do some pastas and garlic knots but I could never get past the delicious pizzas and subs. So if you're in the area, stop by Carrboro Plaza for a bit. The Carrboro Plaza is weird. Judging by the looks of the place, it's basically a time machine that only goes to 1985. But in 1985, the pizza I got at Anna Maria's still would have been considered lousy, even by Ronald Reagan standards. Lukewarm, chewy, greasy: it was like I was gnawing on the Gipper himself. I've been a happy customer of Anna Maria's for a few years now. Love the food, but my most recent experience there has me rethinking if I want to spend my money there. I ordered a sandwich to go and when I went to pick it up, the person running the register was going on a rant about how the government was going to go door to door and take everyone's guns. Then he asked me what my opinion was. When I said nobody needs assault rifles, he again said that Obama was going to go door to door and take everyone's guns, just like they did with the gold coins a few years ago. I have no idea what he was talking about. Then he said nobody was gonna take his guns away from him. I wanted to throw my sandwich at him and ask for my money back. I just wanted some food, not a right wing nutjob lecture. Unfortunately, I won't be back to Anna Maria's Pizzeria any time soon. Which is a shame because their food is great. read more

After tasting the pizza at Anna Maria's Hillsborough store several months ago, I wrote it off as just another Pizza Hut wannabe. I didn't even take the time to review it! A fellow Yelper (Ron W.) suggested Anna Maria's Carrboro pizzeria after he read my review of IP3 in Chapel Hill. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by the pizza at the Carrboro store. However, I do have some quibbles with the Carrboro pizza. For starters, it is not really a thin crust, but it's not too thick either. They're also a little too generous with the cheese and sauce, which makes the pizza a little "gloppy" during consumption. However, they get the whole baking thing right. The dough is reasonably stiff without being overcooked. When you fold the pizza slice down the middle with your index finger as you pick it up, it stays folded almost to the tip. If you look at the bottom of the slice you should see some blackened spots. Not burnt, just blackened. A good sign! So the crust holds up well and is not gummy. Would I travel to eat this pizza? Probably not. But if I'm in Carrboro and I have a hankerin' for pizza, I'll definitely head over to Anna Maria's read more

4.5 stars I love Anna Maria's in Carrboro. It's my #1 go-to pizza spot, right up there with Village Pizza & Pasta in Chatham County. Ther pizza is the closest to authentic NY style pizza that you will find in Chapel Hill/Carrboro. And their white pizza is amazing--it has tons of ricotta and garlic. I'm also a huge fan of their pepperoni, broccoli and onion calzones, which can feed 2 and are packed full of toppings for only $8! Go here and grab a slice, or take home a whole pie. But make sure you go to the Chapel Hill/Carrboro location, not the one in Graham. The one in Graham is the worst--they don't cook their pizza all the way through and they barely give you any toppings. read more

I've been here countless amounts of times, still one of my favorite pizza places in the Chapel Hill area. It's a place I've gone to over the years and made many memories with friends. The slices are always warm and cheesy but not too hard or hot that I can't chew it. The garlic knots are also pretty good, so try those out if you like garlic knots. Pizza is good but I just placed my second order ever for pick-up and pretty much had to beg the guy taking my phone order to be patient. He was incredibly rude and insisted on hanging up because he was so impatient with taking the order. With service like this, don't count on them being in business much longer. I've been a fan of Anna Maria's for a while, BUT..went in tonight and ordered pizza, when it came time to pay, they said they were having trouble with my mom's card and that it wasn't going through..she went to check her bank statement, and the charge had gone through already. we showed the guys behind the counter, and they wouldn't admit that it showed their pizza place on the charge of the exact amount that our meal was. after trying to get them to admit the charge was from them, the one guy behind the counter started cursing at my mother and they were telling us to go home without our money or our food. i will be finding a new pizza restaurant from now on. read more

Walked in to order pizza for my wife and I. Man at the counter who was handling the pizza was counting out a wad of cash to put in the register. After he finished he turned and started touching the food without gloves. I realize that any germs passed onto the food would more than likely be killed once cooked.
