Surprisingly and not…read moresurprisingly, this city and area, the crown jewel of the rubber industry and home of big tire manufacturers, has enough critical mass to warrant culture, fine dining, and entertainment venues. The nearby university (University of Akron) is a medium- to large-sized school that has many of the chain eateries and coffeehouses nearby. Not surprisingly, a major university niche area is polymer engineering, which relates to the rubber industry. I asked about independent coffeehouses and was steered several miles west on Market Street to Angel Falls Coffee, although I was given some other indie names. The name Angel Falls registered. Located in Venezuela, it is the tallest waterfall in the world! I was also told that the coffeehouse and its immediate area, Highland Square, lean bohemian and is where the cool kids in the area opt to live. Once you get out of your car, the quirkiness of the area is evident and it continues in going inside to Angel Falls Coffee. If it were in a strip mall, which it is not, Angel Falls would seemingly take up two bays. The left half of the store is where you order near the glass cases and where there is merchandise. The right half of the store is the slightly frumpy wood paneled coffeehouse with the seating. I need to immediately mention some things. The selection of teas is stellar. I was able to land on apricot flavored tea that is a caffeinated black tea. It was delicious. If that isn't enough, there's a large selection of cookies, cupcakes, pastries, and slices of cake and the prices are fair. The cupcake I selected was excellent. The service is pleasant enough and they attend to people quickly. You can take your purchase to go. However, many people choose to stay to eat in. Places like Angel Falls make me chuckle and scratch my head as to how I check the D box on my voter registration yet I find counterculture people amusing, intriguing, and irritating. Now, at a suburban coffee house where many of the patrons might check the R box, these mental gymnastics wouldn't even register. But I don't want to check the R box. Thus, I rolled with this "rubbing of the elbows" with some unique people: Highland Square residents, Akron U. students, university employees, progressives, hippies, various area residents who come because it's a good coffeehouse, and others steered here because of asking for recommendations. You'll remember this coffeehouse because it's far from cookie cutter. Parking can be found free of charge on the side streets. There are diagonal parking spaces out front that are metered. Again, the coffeehouse itself is a little bit dowdy which detracts from it getting 5 stars. But the selection of teas, baked goods, and the expedient service are its strong points. I'm sure the coffee, of which there are many varieties, is also good. There are also some interesting eateries packed into these few blocks. Angel Falls is thus squarely a 4 star experience and one that I could see people repeating often if a local, or from time to time if passing through.

Pioneer followed Covid19 protocols. All furniture was sanitized after being used. I witnessed this happen several times. The barista washed his hands before preparing my drinks and in between customers. Customers wore masks. I would describe pioneer as a third wave coffee establishment. Equipment. They use a Nuova Simonelli Mythos Commercial Espresso Grinder and a La Marzocco Linea Commercial Dual Boiler Italian Espresso Machine. I witnessed pour over coffees brewed in a Kalita Wave 185 dripper. They currently use excellent coffee from specialty coffee roaster Theory Coffee Roasters from Redding, CA. The single origin coffee pour over I ordered was excellent. It was clean with a great after taste. I also ordered a cortado. It too was excellent. Presentation. The pour over coffee was served with a Kalita Wave carafe and a Lino coffee mug on a white plate. Personally, I think Pioneer should swap out the white plate for a wooden tray. The Kalita carafe just didn't fit right in the tray and made too much noise when replacing it after pouring my coffee. I think a wooden tray of some sort would go better with the decor. Decor. I'd describe the decor as a barn/farm/rustic/lodge. Old farm equipment decorates the walls and spaces. Edison lights hand from the walls. Old window frames hang on one wall. I love how they broke up the space by creating separate comfortable sitting area. The Brown, rustic cushioned seats and brown cushioned sofa are super comfortable and the animal skin rug gives the space a lodge like feel. The bathroom was super clean and spacious. The seating is a mixture of black leather love seats, couches, and tables with black seats. What I think is so cool is the PAC MAN game that sits in the corner!! The owner must be a PAC MAN fan because his phone has the PAC MAN sounds on it. I heard them when he was in the store using his phone The menu is a traditional coffee shop that combines coffee, teas, smoothies, and sandwiches. But they put their own Akron and personal twist to all their menu items and so you'll find menu items here that you can't find any else. I'm really curious about their craft herbal drinks and what looks like a craft citrus honey with lemon drink. They also have a variety of baked goods that look decadent and delicious. Perhaps the most covid friendly spot I've been in in a while... upon entry you take your temperature, it's exceptionally clean, staff is well masked, and the plastic shields are surrounding the counter. May I say, it's also the absolute coolest coffee shop interior I've been in, it's practically a post modern meets a dark, contemporary style. It's absolutely fabulous! I think this coffee shop is the perfect fit for the people of Akron. A space like this truly captures what the people need! Dining is available, and I would definitely take advantage of that. There are so many comfy spaces and areas all throughout. The two baristas at the counter were super awesome and made my time in the shop super marvelous. Beyond coffee, you can also get smoothies and sandwiches! The fun part is that majority of the drinks and snacks are named after people super special from the owners family. I ordered the Monique which is quite simply a mocha! I got it iced, which meant that it was a frozen drink. It was chocolatey, smooth, and wonderfully delicious.
