This place's setup reminded me of Dunkin Donuts, but the ones way back 30 years ago, with dim morning lighting & friendly Indian owner-operators, not like the Dunkin Donuts of today, with their fluorescent life-sucking lights, industrial bathroom cleaner smell and dirty staff who've never baked a thing in their life. The maple glazed whipped cream-covered long John was the single most indulgent thing I've ever eaten. The Apple fritter wasn't good - dry, with some sickly sweet artificial additive-tasting apple filling in the middle. And it was like $3 or some shit! Incidentally , the proprietor, upon my ordering said Apple fritter, commented suggestively to my husband, "She likes the big ones, does she?" and actually winked. OLD SCHOOL IS IN THE HOUSE!! As we were driving down the street, I noticed this donut shop out of the corner of my eye. I made a mental note and decided that I would look them up later. When I checked them out on Yelp, I noticed that they had few, (although positive) ratings and even fewer photos. I also noticed that their hours were from 4 am until 9 pm. Is that a typo? Those are some very generous hours and they left me intrigued. I decide that before we head out of town, we should try these donuts. Knowing that I might get into a little trouble, I also decide to mitigate damages before anything even happens. That way, I can walk in guilt-free and order whatever I want. Yes!! I prepare a couple of smoothies made from fresh turnip greens, nectarines, banana and blueberries that we finish enroute.. Now I'm ready! The bakery is a very simple building that seems to have been there for years. It was one a Dunkin Donuts. Ewww! As we enter, I notice that the bakery is divided into two sections, (eat in and take out). The eat in counter is for those who want to have one of their breakfast sandwiches while take out is for those just picking up donuts. We proceed to order a variety of treats such as chocolate and traditional donuts, donut holes, and an almond pastry. I ask if she has anything close to a cake donut and the glazed cruller is suggested. After returning to the car, we try the donuts. OMG! The donut holes are very light and airy and just seem to collapse as they touch my mouth. I found myself popping them in like raisins. Thank goodness I only purchased half of a dozen! I then move on to the Cruller which I can only describe as a thing of beauty! Cake donuts are my favorite so this was my everything. It was so good that I exited the car and purchased another one, (for later)! In the mean time, we decided that we do not need breakfast because these "old school" donuts are quite substantial compared to the chain varieties. You will only need to eat a couple before feeling very satisfied. My husband and I both agree that these are some of the best donuts we have ever tasted. They are just a quality product, perfectly executed and definitely worth a visit. We actually went out of our way to the opposite side of town for these donuts and it was absolutely a great decision. Just went for the first time today after seeing it on the drive home a couple of days ago. I went back with my wife. I love the way it looked from the outside, with stools and bar to sit at. I went in and was greater by the most friendly older gentlemen. I told him it was my first time and he gave me an overview. Eventually it choose a coconut covered, a glaze, and then a chocolate glaze and a peanut covered ( because he had just made those). Went to North Hill Donuts today for the first time. We ate at the counter tried Cinnamon buns and donuts with coffee and hot chocolate. The coffee is good but if you are looking for some mocha, half-skim latte I left my testosterone at home coffee this is not the place for you. It is an old school donut shop with quality donuts. They do something strange there...they actually make the donuts fresh one-site! No having them shipped in like other franchise shops now do with their donuts. It is cash only so that curtailed my order a bit I only had $10 cash. But they got me three cream sticks and three glazed donuts plus a large coffee. Cream sticks were absolutely wonderful and so are the glazed. I would give this 5 stars so I really don't mind the cash only deal but the coffee could be stronger. I now have two places I can purchase the best cream sticks I have ever tasted... Michael's Bakery in Orrville, Ohio and now here at North Hill Donuts in Akron, Ohio. Well, the cream sticks here at North Hill Donuts are either a very close second to Michael's Bakery or tied for first place. Too difficult to tell. I would have to eat & compare them side-by-side. The only downside and consequential half-star demerit was the building and that when I arrived at 5 AM the floors had just been mopped and there was a rather unpleasant odor remaining. We just moved from Phoenix and have a tradition of donuts every Sunday morning from a little mom and pop place so we figured we'd give this place a go. The donuts were ALL very dry, like they were a day or two old, and we were there before 9am, so they shouldn't have been old by that point.
