There weren't too many people that it was overwhelming. There is enough room to dance and spread out and grab drinks. It was definitely too loud to talk, but the great part about this place is they have an upstairs and downstairs. Upstairs was pretty busy, every table filled and a line out the door. We opted to go downstairs where we met a super awesome bartender, definitely some kind of hippie, and got a few shots. They weren't too expensive and it didn't take long. I came here a few days ago and there is a lot of people in there that didn't get there I'd checked..... As a father it partly concerns me that this establishment could be ruining our children's future. On top of the originality there where a lot of people hurt with no help at the time I had been there, not even police nor a ambulance. I've often heard rumors from several people that they actually hire felons and also have illegal drug services. They don't actually serve any form of food just alcohol might I also mention the alcohol choices in there are not the best as it's very limited. read more

They serve minors and I was inside a few months back when I got kicked out for no reason, there service is not the best either. No one there really cards anyone especially the bar tender, people have also got knocked out, broken bones, dislocated joints and major injuries and they won't even call a ambulance. Safety is not a priority but most off all there are leaks all over the ceilings I honestly wouldn't expect there to be black mold!!! read more

I wanted to update my review after reading some of the older ones. First thing I will say - is there is no longer smoking allowed inside. So for the people who are turned off by stuff areas full of smoke, no need to worry, you won't encounter that here. Second thing is that the basement has recently been completely remodeled. There are beautiful murals painted on all the walls and the lighting is dim but inviting with twinkle lights lining the ceiling. They have events almost every night in the venue but the basement remains pretty calm which is great because you can still have a conversation without yelling over the music. *** Great bar for live music, cheap drinks, and a chill atmosphere. They no longer allow smoking inside, which I really appreciate. My favorite thing about Andy's is the basement where they serve amazing waffle sandwiches and wings. I can objectively say that the behavior of the denizens of this establishment make me truly disappointed to be an American. I have been around the world to regions without running water and have never been treated like this. Do not go here. The staff are racist and belligerent. They are callous and crude. The behavior that is tolerated in this establishment should not and will not be tolerated by this community. If I could give negative stars: -infinity/5 The bartenders upstairs were chill. I advise looking through the other reviews specifically the lower rated ones and figuring out what the themes are. Two friends, my girlfriend, and I were drinking upstairs. It was my girlfriend's 21st birthday, so we went to Paschall's. We stayed there until closing time, which was 12am. We decided to simply head downstairs, same building, same business, and keep the party going until 2, which is when Andy's closes. My friend was drinking a drink, and we did not think it would be an issue to take the drink he had from upstairs to the basement. In all honesty, he forgot he was holding it. We collectively spent over 150$ on drinks upstairs. In hindsight, spending money there was foolish. As soon as we got inside one of the staff, who claimed to be the owner, immediately ambushed my friend and took the glass with an extremely aggressive, careless, and belligerent attitude. He got in our faces, invaded our personal space, and was not tactful or respectful with his tone or body language. As consumers, and more importantly, people, I find this unacceptable and in poor taste. At the same time, the woman working behind the bar took a photo of our group, (specifically of my friend) without our consent, and claimed to have put it in their work chat. We tried to explain that it was an accident and that it wouldn't happen again. It was our first time at this establishment. They did not care and called for us to, "Just get out." Mind you, these are all white men who seem to be between 35-45. A disgusting display of behavior and a disgusting crowd to be around. This group claimed to be friends of the staff and owner. I would not advise putting yourself in this environment. The treatment of, my girlfriend, my friends, and myself make me wonder if my family's service to this country as American service members was truly worth it (SEMPER FI). My family has served this country since it's inception. My bloodline has fought through countless battles and has experienced death on many fields for the people of this country. The blood that runs through my veins has stained countless battlefields and has given the enemy an opportunity to do so since the beginning of our great nation. They, and countless others, of multiple ethnic groups, have died for these people's freedom to be pieces of human garbage. We are a nation born from the hands of immigrants and refugees. Last night was NYE and I've never seen the basement at Andy's so crowded. There were 2 bartenders and I have never seen 2 bartenders move as slow as they did last night. It's new years eve. The bar is packed. And they moved like they were underwater. The Male bartender, as he was shaking a cocktail, said outloud "someone just slit my throat right now". I get it. Its fucking busy. If you've been to Andy's you've probably seen me. This is my home away from home, my Cheers. I have never met more caring bartenders. Even before I knew them very well, they took the time to learn my name, what I usually drink and ask me how my day was going. Since then, I've had them stand up for me, hug a bad day away, or simply sit and talk on a slow night. Another thing I love about this bar: No matter what night it is, if you don't want to see the band, you don't have to pay cover. You just tell them you're going down to the basement. It always irritates me if I have to pay cover at a bar when I don't care about the band. Andy's has a music venue on the ground floor. For the most part, its not my kind of music, but there are a handful of great local bands that turn the show into quite a party. Most of the regulars hang out in the basement. Its a smokey little dive bar with great service, a fantastic juke box, pool tables, and ring toss. And they serve food until midnight--try the super fries, they'll change your life. And if none of that floats your boat and you've got extra money to spend, there's a cushy VIP room on the second floor for $25/month. Its really nice up there, but the basement is more my style. But beware, this is not the place where you come to pick up chicks/guys. Its just a laid back place hang out with friends and meet cool people. read more

Technically, this is only a partial review. Andy's is actually three different bars. There's Andy's, where they have all the music acts and a full bar, there's Paschall, which is upstairs, looks really nice and cozy and has the overpriced mixed drinks for the hipster crowd and a the view of Denton square and there's the basement bar, which has a low ceiling, a couple of pool tables and cheap beer. This is about the basement bar. I discovered it a couple of years ago on Christmas night. It was the only bar open and I had been working that night and was just getting home. (I work in TV news). There were only about seven to ten people there plus one bartender and a bar back. Loud music from a digital jukebox and a tv were on. It was smokey and a pool table was in action. I certainly was not ready to end my night, so I grabbed a Shiner and sat down on a stool and took in the place. I like a good dive bar sometimes. This place was cold. It was drafty and the exit door didn't want to stay shut that night. So everyone had coats on. The bartender was helpful and I've seen him around town at a few other bars when I've been out. Hard not to remember a tall, skinny guy with black rimmed glasses. Kinda sticks out. He knew most all the other customers in the basement. I guess that makes for a good bartender. Even in a hole like this. I'm not putting the place down. I enjoy that it is a hole. I have returned a few more times, even bringing a buddy with me who also had been here. I don't know, maybe it's me, but I occasionally enjoy a no frills kind of place. No attitude, no bs, no nothing. Exposed brick walls, mix and match tables and chairs and a handful of people thrown in..... And a good, cheap beer in hand. Can you ask for any more? read more

This review is of course for the basement portion of the bar only. I was here on a Friday night and there was live music going on the main floor. This area required a cover charge but if you go straight downstairs, there is no cover. They mark your hand with a marker so you can't sneak in upstairs. I would classify the downstairs as "divey" and "stuffey." Second hand smoke is rampant and there is no way to get away from it as there are no windows. The space itself is small and there are few places to sit. The drink specials were decent though, but I didn't think the crowd or staff were that friendly. Went there after seeing the basement entrance on a date. Nice yallternative vibe with a beautiful downstairs bar. They had the godfather playing which made me pretty happy. Ordered my drinks from a blonde/redheaded bartender who was very nice and hospitable. After a few minutes and another drink I walk around the basement looking at the cool decorations and furniture and books that are all around. I look up this staircase that they have that leads to the main event area, BIG sign on it that says not to go up that way, i stand there reading it for a second and turn around and walk back to the bar. As soon as i round the corner a bigger woman who was bartending yells at me "How did you get down here? youre not supposed to be coming down here from the stairs. Dont ever do that again" She was extremely hostile, aggressive and confrontational. I told her that i did NOT go up the stairs but that it was my first time here and that i was just looking around their property. She insisted that i had come down from the crickity old stair case and snuck into the bar. I showed her my drink sitting next to my date and my tooth pick and confronted her about her mean attitude toward me. I said i wasnt going to cause any problems and not to worry about me going up there because of the sign. I thought that was the end of it, when i sit back down i hear her telling other patrons "that motherf*cker thinks im stupid, i saw him come down from those stairs" I get back up and confront her again. "I do not think youre stupid, but i am telling you i did not go up those stairs and im not going to let you treat me like sh*t for something i did not do." At this point some skinny guy with long brown hair starts yelling at me telling me to get the hell out of his bar over and over, not once did anyone ask me what had happened, not once did any of them try and listen to anything i was trying to say. Not once did i get the benefit of the doubt of being a first timer at their bar. The man gets increasingly more aggressive and loud and starts screaming at me to get the f*ck out. I finish my drink and walk out. The actions of those two bartenders ruined not only my night, but potentially the relationship with the rest of their guests. never in my life have i ever witnessed bartenders act in such a way to anyone. read more

My review is based on the Basement bar at Andy's.. I've never spent much time upstairs, as there is usually a screaming metal band making my ears bleed. Go downstairs! Your brain will thank you. I absolutely love the feel of this place.. Cozy and welcoming. It's relatively small, but if you get there before 9 or 10, you'll find a place to sit. There are a couple of pool tables and a jukebox that's highly playable. They have a big screen TV for sports and what not, but that's not what gets my attention. The bartenders are ridiculously awesome. I usually saw the same two any time I went, and they try and recognize you or get to know your name. They're extremely helpful with recommending drinks, and have a full bar of tasty beverages. They make drinks right, including bloody marys, which aren't easy to do! I love the usual patrons, too. Sometimes you get the hipster punk crowd, but for the most part its full of cool, laid-back people just looking to hang out and have a good time. In summary: The location's ideal being right on the square, the drinks are tasty, the people are awesome, and the prices are quite reasonable. You have no excuse not to try it. read more

I love Andy's! I've spent a fair amount of time there and usually drop by whenever I visit Texas so that I can catch up with friends still working on those six-year college plans. The upstairs/street-level floor has a big stage for live music with a decent soundsystem. The downstairs has a couple of pool tables and a huge ass TV projection screen that almost always has a sporting event playing. The bartenders are quick and usually attractive. The drink prices are totally decent with some great nightly specials. The music is stellar. Only minus I can really think of is that it can get super-smoky, especially downstairs. But that's almost any bar in Denton, I suppose. read more

Seriously? What's up with Andy's Bar? For years I've been going there and listening to music. They hired new people. They put in an addition to the apartment upstairs, and they totally f%@king suck now. The VIP area looks cool...but unless you are a pedophile looking to enjoy a quiet night of Playboys and ESPN it is the lamest thing I've ever seen. That's not even what I have a problem with. The sound guy (in training) had the mix muddled and unintelligible (mid-rangey for you audiophiles) at first, then you could hear the monitors over the main mix cracking, because they were too hot. And after the show he shouted at the band that they had to move out all their equipment before they got paid. I am so sorry that Andy's hired a bunch or pre-schoolers to work there, because I thought it was an establishment for true Dentonites to enjoy music and drinking. Generally I like to see new attitudes, but not when the attitudes totally disrespect what has come before them. Imagine the new staff of Andy's taking a piss on Pops Carter. I have never seen a band play from 11 p.m. until last call and keep everyone there. The crowd left with nothing but smiles, but the staff stuck around with nothing but attitude. I saw the Andrew Tinker Band play for more than two hours and when I left I saw only disrespect for the band from the new staff. I hope Andy's will inform its new staff members that it's been around for much longer than they have, and that good music is harder to come by than bartenders and door guys. Andy's Bar is a great place to see shows, as they have the right sound system and book great bands. The bar downstairs sometimes feels like a dungeon and can be burdened by horrific music selections that are often far too loud. The drinks are inexpensive and average, not much to brag or complain about there. It's worth attending to see some great bands, but otherwise I try to avoid it. Upstairs in the same building on the square is Paschall Bar which is really the place you want to go to have amazing drinks and a great atmosphere. I believe they're owned by different people but are engaged in some sort of partnership, so I don't feel any qualms about posting that in this review. read more

This part of the Denton bar scene and located on the downtown square, Andy's smokey interior is one of the places you can catch some of the many emerging bands in North Texas. Denton Bands regularly test new material on a small audience. Other than a stage and a bar, Andy's offers little else in the way of features. The upstairs was nice and the venue was to be expected for a concert. However, The bartender in the basement was extremely rude to me and my fiance when we were just sitting on the couch. We also witness the workers throwing a tantrum in the kitchen. Bathroom doors being banged on by staff. I know its a bar and I have been to plenty. It was just a very uncomfortable experience. This is my favorite spot and I've been to them all. I love dive bars. Anything goes speedbar. There is always an eclectic crowd, and a spectacle to behold. Fighting is never tolerated, and almost never happens. There is a tight knit community of regulars here, prepared to welcome anyone to the family, so long as they keep it cool and not be a jerk. Don't expect anything fancy. But the food is good and cheap, the beer is cold and cheap, the liquor is cheap cheap cheap all around, and the service is fast friendly and diverse. OK. So I've stage managed quite a few burlesque shows at this bar with various troupes and I have to say after this last experience, I will turn down all gigs in the future. It is just not worth it! When I first start managing my friend's show a year ago, the venue was cool, the people were nice, the dressing room was OMG awesome and we were even given our own bartender who was always amazing. If I would have started Yelping events a year ago, I would have given this place a 4 out of 5 for just being a fun, local bar. Now, I feel 2 is being generous. As soon as I walked in I was accosted by old cigarette smoke. Seriously people, if you're going to allow smoking in your bar, then clean the floor and air it out! Anywho, long story short, the girls were told that they did not have a dressing room despite verifying it with them over 3 times, including once the day before. They were told to use the bathroom which is one stall each and customers would also have access to it. Not cool. If you've never been backstage at a burlesque show before, it is like a Macy's White Sale aftermath. Shit just be ERRYWHERE!!!! and everyone needs their own space in order to get ready. Thankfully, everyone was a trooper until we found out that they did not want us to close off the curtain so would not show all of their kibbles and bits to the audience. I mean, burlesque is about tease, not sleaze and a $10 ticket is not enough for you to see all of the church's business. So after having to get the most basic things handled, the show started and went without a hitch. Sad thing is though that it was a troupe's debut and they can't get that memory changed because it is what it is. I left feeling very angry at the bar for taking advantage and not doing really anything to compensate. Communication is key and I seriously do not feel comfortable doing business with them ever again. Even odder, I did not recognize any of the previous staff that were so awesome. Did they run them off with their shenanigans or what? Maybe they are being held in the surprise renovations room of an area that was said to be free the night before. So what does this have to do with the average non-stripping patron you ask? Well, the whole thing there is that it is an event venue. If you can't take care of your talent, including helping with sound check and etc, then you are basically forcing a mediocre show that people have to pay for. That is just not the look. Without the bands, burly-q girls and etc, Andy's is just a sub-par dive bar without the charm, which is a shame. It really was an awesome little bar of fun at one time. Hopefully they will pull themselves together and issue the troupe an apology and make the appropriate changes to being back the charm it has now lost., but I severely doubt they will. read more

The downstairs part is the best place in town! Reason for this is bartenders are great, they have fries, and it is never crowded.

The basement isn't the greatest part of this building. Unlike the two upstairs bars the basement lacks character. The one time I went in there I ordered one beer the glass still had lipstick on it. I paid and left it sitting on the bar and headed back upstairs. read more

Pretty nice, the ground floor part has some garage band shows a lot, and the below bit looks a bit on the seedy and depressing side, which is cool if you're into that sort of thing. Awesome, friendly staff. Not pretentious, not "live" like Fry St but a lot of fun for adults (23+). Probably about as friendly of staff as you'll find in Denton. And they can make drinks. This is kind of a big deal because it is really hit or miss on the square. I won't mention any names but I've been served some undrinkable, very basic drinks on the square. Also super cheap, which is why it's extra amazing that the drinks I've been served have been well made. The only bummer is that they still smoke in the basement. I don't smoke anymore and I hate coming out with my hair smelling like smoke. Oh well. I love this bar. read more

I have been to Andy's a few times and usually had a pretty good time. We would go down to the basement and I really enjoyed the vibe and the bartenders that worked those nights I was in there. Well I hadn't been in for awhile and decided to come in on the 10th, last Tuesday. Now the reason why I gave such a low rating is because of the one bartender that waited on me that night. She was awful. I actually work in the service industry and there was no excuse for how awful she was. One of the worst attitudes, literally gave me "bitch face" when I would ask for drink, and just her being there brought the whole vibe of the bar down. And then the cherry on top was her last call, cussing everyone out to leave the bar. I know I don't go to Andy's that often, but she was definitely a face a didn't recognize from before and hope to never see again. I also didn't care to catch her name at the time but she was kind of short with long red hair.
