Updating my review since it's been another four years. I have a 2004 VW Golf diesel. I think I've been going to Andres for about 10 years. In that time they've taken care of routine maintenance, replaced my lock actuators, cleaned the intake, replaced the cooling hoses, replaced my suspension, replaced my clutch, replaced my breaks, and I think they did my timing belt. The service has always been great. I've never had any trouble with their work. The value is fantastic too. I always feel like I'm getting a good deal. read more

HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE! I called the day before and set up an appointment to take my Honda Civic in to get my AC re-charged and to determine cause of check engine light being on. When I got there (on time) I told him (Luis) I had a 12pm appointment. He asked me all the same questions he had asked me the day before as he obviously hadn't put any of my information in or scheduled me for an appointment. Needless to say they were lots of cars there and I was told I'd have to wait an hour and 45 minutes just to be pulled in! Then I was told it'd cost me $75 to run a check on the engine light and another $75 for AC re-charge. I asked if the $75 check for engine light would go towards my repairs he replied, "no that's additional". Needless to say, I left as I didn't feel I should have to wait nearly 2 hours when I made an appointment and neither did I feel I should have to pay the additional charge. If that was the case, I might as well had taken it to the dealership. So if you're looking for economical pricing and people to consider your time this is NOT the place to be! read more

I really like Andres. I especially like the owner, Luis. He is the difference between coming here or going somewhere that MIGHT be cheaper. He doesn't come at you like, "Hey, ah, you got some issues wit ya car! You're gonna need dis and dis and dis and it's gonna cost ya!" No sir, Luis is the most calm, understanding, rational, educated, and comforting mechanic I've ever known. He is like the, dare I say, Mister Rogers of mechanics. He works you through all the issues your car may have and explains the processes involved in repairing those issues. He makes eye contact with you so that you feel like you're a friggin' human being. I've had it with mechanics that talk to you while walking the other way or while shaking their head looking at a computer monitor. I have taken my car to Andres about 5 or 6 times so far and I also know a lot of people who use his services, and I haven't had or heard of any issues. As long as I'm in the neighborhood, I'll continue seeing Luis at Andres for all of my automotive needs. read more

Prices are NOT CHEAP, but they ARE fair and lower than the ridiculous estimates I got from BMW dealers and Shops in closer to the loop. I have been having my cars handled by Andres for years and they are fantastic. Louis is the owner and has always been honest, upfront and fair. Having a good mechanic is one of those valuable things that you dont really appreciate until you've been to a non-honest shop. I believe they'll work on any type of car, but they specialize in foreign which is great. Having a European car worked on by the dealer is insanely expensive. BMW, Audi, etc. Andres has all of the computer systems required to "plug in" to all of these foreign cars and is about 1/2 the price of the dealer. They dont wash your car when it's in service like the BMW dealership, but while it may seem free you're definitely paying BMW handsomely for these added touches. I'd prefer to pay 1/2 on the actual service work and take my car to be washed down the street for $20. I've recommended them to a few friends and their feedback has always been positive. You wont regret using these guys. read more

I've been going to Andres Auto for 4 years now. Every time they do an excellent job. Specifically, they listen to each item that needs attention, and then address those items to get them resolved in a timely and professional manner. They communicate effectively along the way and keep you posted on what they find. Their repairs are of the highest quality and there are no problems after the fact (which is the worst!). Ok, So I've read the other reviews and for the most part, they're consistent with my own experience. I was having major issues with my Mercedes and passing the emissions test. I was definitely against going to the dealership because they are ridiculously overpriced and I don't really like dealing with them in general. So a big point with my review is that they were able to work on a Mercedes and ultimately saved me thousands of dollars on the work they performed. I had more than one major issue with my car, but just to give an example, the initial quote from Mercedes to do the work they told me was required for my car (not including other odds and ends I passed on), the dealership gave me an estimate for around $5,000. Andre's did all of the work, and got me the same results for a little over $2,000. My car hasn't run this well since I bought it, even after I took it in for the scheduled dealer maintenance. The only negative thing I can say about them, and it really isn't that bad is you as the customer often have to be proactive when it comes to getting updates on the status of their work, particularly if you have a major fix needing to be done. But aside from that, I really can't complain. They let me use their Bonneville for free while they worked on my car. Maybe I drove a different one that John W., but I didn't have any problems with it. It was clean and ran well, that's all I expected. Another plus is that I dropped my car off filthy and in need of serious detailing. I didn't even ask them, nor did they ask, but they just went ahead and detailed the car. I kind of felt like I just got a new car when I first got into it. Overall, these guys are honest and helpful. They'll let you price out parts and let you explore all of your options before doing anything. They've done great work on my vehicle and I would recommend them to anyone without worrying. They did a good job fixing my (admittedly major) problem. They also gave me a loaner (for free) to use as a daily driver until I could get my own car back. The loaner was definitely at the bottom of my list when it comes to cars I would choose to drive (it was a Pontiac Bonneville), but it got me to and from work for the most part. "For the most part...?" Yeah, the defroster kind of overheated and stopped working during the biggest snow storm in December. I was less than thrilled with the prospect of having no heat to speak of, and having to peer through a tiny portion of the windshield that didn't get iced over. I could live with the loaner car, since it meant I didn't have to go rent anything. The reason they get 2 stars is that it took them over a week to do the repair, and I was the one who had to call them every day to get an update on my car's status. Overall, the shop is technically competent, but it suffers with efficiency and service hiccups that are, frankly, unacceptable -- especially when people are paying the kinds of prices they charge. read more

So I've been having some major issues with my car-wouldn't start for one- and finding a new mechanic after moving here from Texas was not something I was looking forward to. However, after seeing tons of positive reviews on citysearch for this place, I called and within the hour my car was towed there and was ready the very next day. Andre, the owner, called me several times, was very nice throughout the process and very knowledgable. The cost was 700-ouch!- seemed very steep but what do I know about cars? I had to get a lot done-tune-up, oil change, new serpentine belt, battery change, etc. I am taking 1 star off, though, b/c of their towing charge-90 bucks! I have had to get my car towed a few times to other mechanics in the past and was never charged a fee since I was getting a lot of work done, so I was surprised to see such an expensive charge for only a 10 minute tow. However, my car is running fantastic, so check this place out if you need a good mechanic. UPDATE: I realized after reviewing my bill that I was charged for a battery change when it wasn't done, and one of the windshield wiper replacements was not working properly. At first I was a bit annoyed, as I imagine anyone would be, but I called and spoke to Luis-he apologized profusely-it was a miscommunication about the battery-and asked me to bring it in. He removed the charge but changed the battery anyway, replaced my windshield wipers, and also checked coolant fluid. I am BIG fan of businesses that own up to their mistakes and go out of their way to correct them, so I bumped the stars up to 5. I will definately be back to this place, they are honest and reliable! read more

This Place is the bees knees. My car broke down and the mechanic by my house said I needed a new fuel pump and they were going to charge me 800 to fix it. I called around and andres quoted me 600. I get my car towed up to the shop they call me and they pull it off the truck and low and behold my car just decided to start right up. They were honest the called me to come get my running car and there was nothing wrong that they could see, Three years later no fuel pump needed, I guess all I really needed was an honest mechanic. Luis is the owner of this auto repair shop. His shop specializes in service of foreign cars. My 2003 BMW 330 ci convertible was in need of some great TLC when I brought it in to Andres for an estimate for repairs. I knew the car needed a lot of work. It had a major oil leak and after recently changing the control arm bushings, a light had come on the dashboard that was related to issues in the steering column. I had many other miscellaneous issues and several other lights turned on the dashboard. It was getting to be a bit ridiculous that I kept ignoring the lights on my dashboard for over 6 months, but I was afraid of what the pricetag would be. I had checked into the oil leak before and was quoted $800 on that alone. The suspension and steering column issues were quoted at another $2,500 and the list goes on and on. I had been quoted estimates at other shops that were $4k and above. And let's not even talk about what the dealer wanted...... One of the minor things that I needed fixed was the rubber seal on the back windows. My lovely dog (God bless this beast) ate (yes ate) the top parts of the rubber off of both of the windows. In the summer I could get by with not worrying about a little added breeze even when the windows were closed, but as you all know, in the winter, every little bit of protection counts so air blowing in from holes in the rubber seals is not an option. I actually took the car to the dealer for this before as I had called around to find the part and was told only the dealer could sell it to me. The slick dealer then told me that the seals could not be replaced by themselves, rather the entire back windows had to be replaced and that would be a cost of $800. Are you flippin kidding me????!!!! For some darn rubber that costs less than $5 I should replace windows that have absolutely no issues with them? This was at Perrillo BMW in downtown Chicago, btw. So needless to say, that got put on the back burner for a long time (in the interim the beast no longer rode with me in the car.... her name is Selena btw and she's 110 lbs. of pure love). Anyway, I digress. I went to Andres and Luis called the dealer and found out he COULD purchase just the rubber seals and it was something like $40 plus labor. He told me if he could replace the seals without having to open up the door panels to do so, it would be $50 labor, but if he did have to open the door panels, it would $150 labor. Either way $90-$190 max. out the door sure beats $800!!!! As for the rest of my repairs, which were a very extensive list (2 pages long), my total bill came out to $2,400 (that was including the $190 charge for the window seal replacement). He even did the alignment on the car and changed the little window button that controls the power to put the driver side window up and down (it was ready to break off any day now). He covered every little detail I mentioned, then went into the car's computer and found out all the other issues and gave me a detailed summary of what I was in store for. He was very honest and up front. After having taken my car in to several other places over the past year and being disgusted with their quotes and price gouging, I decided I did not need to shop around anymore. I decided to get all the work done since the car (which is now 10 years old) is completely paid for and only has 78,000 miles on it and if I were still living in LA, it would have at least 160,000 miles on it), so I knew it was worth it to fix it and keep it rather than trade it in and get a huge loss due to the repairs needed and then turn around and have a min. of a $500/mo payment for the next 5 years. If we compare apples to apples, the cost of these repairs vs. having payments on a new car, I will break even in just 5 months, but basically I just bought myself another 50k-75k miles on the car.... at this rate, that could be another 5-10 years if I stay in Chicago (if I don't get bored of the car first). I had bought it 2 years old as a certified-preowned car in CA. 8 years later, fully paid with 1/2 the miles I'd have if still living in LA, I'd say, it's been a GREAT investment. I am very happy with the work. At the time Luis took the car in, he not only agreed to drop me off at the train station after I brought the car to him (and he had already drove my mom home when she brought the car in to him to leave it overnight for the estimate) but he also agreed to have me picked up from the train when the car would be ready a week later (it was a LOT of work). Each time, the rides were given in my own vehicle, which was nice. As a nice added touch, when I picked the car up, it was washed as well. I will DEFINITELY take my car back here again and will be more than happy to refer others here as well! I'm so happy to finally have found an honest auto repair shop owner. Lexus wanted to charge me $375 just for the part while Andre's checked all of their vendors and got it for $40! Luis is very smart- he solved a tricky problem with my Mercedes for which neither I nor the Mercedes manual had a working solution. By manipulating computer commands while driving at highway speeds he successfully burned off a blockage of carbon in a diesel exhaust particulate filter, saving me several thousand dollars replacement cost. He has many training certifications and even set up his own business server and security system. He is hands- on with his mechanics to resolve technical issues. Car mechanics is sometimes complex. Having in-depth knowledge and a good network of expert contacts makes Andres owner, Luis, a go-to problem-solver. I thought twice about writing a review because Andre's was recommended by a friend of a friend. But, this is business so here goes. I took my car in for an oil change; a $65 diagnostic test for the Check Engine light; a quote to fix my speedometer/odometer and the driver's side window. Luis was really nice and accomodating when I had to change my appt several times. He called me back in the afternoon with a list of estimates that did not include the speedometer because, as he says, it would involve extra labor because of the location and what was involved. After paying for the diagnostic check, I decided to take my car back so I could get a 2nd opinion. My boyfriend, who is quite handy, offered to change the spark plugs and wires, something he's done on his own vehicle. I popped the hood and seconds later he noticed that they left the spark plug wires unplugged -- not cool!! My bf managed to fix the speedomoter/odometer by simply changing a fuse. I also had my window fixed for $85 somewhere else - $165 less than what it would have cost at Andre's. read more

i took my car to andre's auto several times. each time they never fix the problem correct i always end up taking it back. this time luis tells me that he my car need a transmission for 1750.00 and i said okay. well he fix the transmission and the car still has the same problem so now he want to charge me to fix something at a less price like a stirring cord that would only cost me 150.00 more dollars. luis should have fix that first now he want to pay for both service which now come up to 2000.00. i will never return and i will try to take him to court. read more
