(2 weeks later, she has begun to miraculously recover but is completely blind from the brain damage.) With great reluctance, we decided to cancel our trip - something I've never done before with a planned vacation. I emailed Alicia and asked whether she would consider partially refunding the cost of our stay (including $100 that we had paid in advance for breakfasts). She was completely unsympathetic to what has been the most heartbreaking situation in my adult life to date, cited needing to take care of her small business, and refused to refund us, even for the food we wouldn't be eating. Summer lodging in Ashland is incredibly busy and in high demand. I'm certain she was able to re-book at least some of those nights on extremely short notice. So Morical House doubled down on their revenue for those nights, and we incurred costs for a Bed & Breakfast (and extra costs for breakfast) at a place we wouldn't be using, on top of thousands of dollars of vet bills. Even our airline, with their rigid policies, was more forgiving than that. If we do make it up to Ashland later this summer, pre-baby, we won't be re-booking here.

My wife and I have just left the B&B without the breakfast we have been looking forward to. It was impossible for us to stay after the way we were treated by the house manager and then the owner. Last night when we checked in, we asked if we could have our dog in our room and were told what we expected to hear: dogs were not allowed in the room. So we made alternative plans - the dog would spend the night in the car with food and water. We went out on to the deck at the edge of the garden with our dog and had dinner delivered - beautiful view of the valley. We went off to our play and took the dog with us and returned about 12:30. We left the dog in the car and headed up to bed. The next morning my wife woke me up saying she had been treated very rudely by the house manager. Very angrily, she told my wife that no dogs were allowed on the premises. My wife tried to apologize for what was clearly a misunderstanding, but the woman refused to hear her. Instead, she repeated that dogs were not allowed and that we had been clearly told this. My wife was shaken up, and since this woman was the one serving breakfast, I decided to call Alicia to clear up the misunderstanding. However, Alicia was just as rude if not more, refusing to let me speak and yelling at me on the phone. She swore she watched us take the dog up to the room the night before. When I tried civilly to point out that we had done no such thing - we had been out at the play - she raised her voice again, "are you calling me a liar?" In so many words, yes I was. We didn't expect our dog would be allowed inside and knew in advance our plans to keep him in the car. If I had intended to be dishonest, I never would have asked. It's always better to ask forgiveness afterwards than to ask permission before. She told me that she had clearly stated we weren't to bring dogs on to the premises. I tried to point out that we had only understood that dogs were not allowed in the room. She yelled at me about mincing words, and said that if I wanted to discuss it with her attorney I was more than welcome. Hence the problem for me: aren't bed and breakfasts supposed to be welcoming? Here I was at a loss - clearly there was a misunderstanding, but rather than being treated civilly, we were yelled at and treated disrespectfully. They would not validate the fact that we understood events differently - even the simple fact that we never had the dog in the room! So a word of caution: stay at your own risk. If you might happen in to a disagreement, you won't be treated respectfully and you cannot expect good customer service. At the end of the day, they don't bank their business on whether or not you feel welcome.

We stayed here during an Oregon Shakesperare Festival trip and really enjoyed ourselves. The staff/owners are amazing. Very friendly, helpful, but not in any way intrusive. The accomodations are great. The House itself is on the National Historic Register and have been well taken care of. The breakfast was awesome--homemade granola with fruit and yogurt--delicious! One thing to keep in mind is that if you're considering this for accomodations for an OSF trip, you may want to reconsider. It is over half an hour from Ashland, so not very convenient if you want to stop back by between shows or shopping. Very nice place, well staffed. Highly recommended.

From the early-morning coffee and scones to a delightful, filling breakfast, the seque to the afternoon tea, and the finish with sherry or port in the evening, you'll share Ashland, life, and Anne Hathaway's itself with the other guests and come away the better for it. We talked about plans and great finds in the city, discussed the plays, dissected the acting and directing styles, and agreed to disagree with a graciousness our legislators need to emulate. The staff was friendly and more-than-competent, echoing the owners' vibe that they were glad we were here. At breakfast, several young local students served. They were attentive without hovering and well-trained without seeming officious. The morning scones (ginger/apricot and cranberry/almond, truly awesome the two mornings we were there) and coffee or tea are available an hour before breakfast. You can grab the house copy of the NY Times or Wall Street Journal to catch up on what is happening in the non-Shakespeare world. Follow that with an excellent breakfast in the back-yard garden area. Breakfast started with a generous fruit course (fresh local berries were in season), accompanied by scones and coffee/tea/fresh-squeezed orange juice. Our first morning we enjoyed a frittata with oven-roasted potatoes and crispy bacon (turkey bacon was also available). Our second breakfast featured a layered berry French toast with a buttermilk syrup as well as chicken sausage. Both mornings the staff asked if we wished more! Would have loved it, but there was just no room. Tables for four or six facilitated getting to know the other guests well. If you want a copy of a recipe, just ask and it appears. I know it's a small thing, but I can't remember the last time we used the sterling silver at breakfast - at least until we got to this B and B. The four o'clock tea featured warm homemade chocolate chip or orange sugar cookies, cheeses and crackers, cashews, fresh fruit, and peanut butter pretzels. This treat can really take the edge off, so all you want is a light dinner. Iced tea and lemonade slaked our thirsts on the hot afternoons. When we got home after the shows, we'd enjoy a drink and revel in each other's company. We guests were strangers when we arrived at Anne Hathaway's. We weren't when we departed. Anne Hathaway's is a charming and beautifully maintained home. The front room has floor-to-ceiling bookshelves crammed with any reading material you might want. The rooms are cozy and comfortable and bursting with art. Make sure you find the red glass heart in the room and get your reward for it. We also appreciated the green, sustainable mindset of the owners and staff. My wife wasn't thrilled when I originally booked Anne Hathaway's instead of our customary B and B.
