This building served as the primary court for the county and was the setting for the infamous Willie Earle trial, which gained international attention when 31 white men were acquitted for the murder of a black taxi driver. The current courthouse was built between 1949 and 1950 and was renovated in 1997 with the addition of a new judicial wing. The previous courthouse was completed in 1918. It was used until 1991 for the Family Court (the SC Family Court wasn't established until 1976). The Family Court later moved into an old movie theatre on University Ridge. In 2021 the Family Court was moved to a facilty on Halton Road.

I came in on a Friday and left Saturday evening but it was long enough to fall in love. Everyone I encountered was friendly. The weather was amazing. Downtown was absolutely charming. They shut down main street for the farmers market and that is worth checking out. Our shuttle driver reassured us that walking around at night was safe and gave us a little tour of the area before dropping us off at the hotel. Going to see the suspension bridge is beautiful and just at the end of main street. I happened into some of the shops and even the bank, and everywhere I went I met nice people and a welcoming attitude. I hope to come here again.

General Griffith Rutherford was a Revolutionary War Hero. Shepherd's Creek was the first county seat, later replaced by Rutherfordton in 1787. This is the fifth courthouse to serve the county after the 1836 Greek Revival-style building was destroyed by fire in 1907. It features Renaissance Revival architecture with a smooth stone veneer and a two-story portico. The classical detailing truly projects the quiet power of the law. It was completed in 1926. The Rutherford County Courthouse houses the County Superior and District Courts of the 29th Judicial District. There is a small annex building to the north. On a weeknight, there was easy parking. The courthouse was completed in 1915 after the county seat moved from Watkinsville to Athens in 1871. It is designed in an Italian Renaissance style with its buff-yellow brick façade, symmetrical five-story form, and a prominent south-facing portico supported by four monumental columns. A wide cornice runs beneath the fourth story, and the flat roofline gives the structure a dignified, institutional silhouette. There are a number of monuments and memorials on the courthouse grounds including the Athens Confederate Monument, a Carrara marble obelisk originally erected in 1872. There is also a marker honoring Abraham Baldwin, founder of the University of Georgia and James Camak, who helped establish the Georgia Railroad. While there is plenty of street parking, the building is completely locked on the weekends. I've read that the interior is impressive and includes some beautiful artwork.
