It was designed by P. Thornton Mayre who is known for the Atlanta Terminal Station (1905), St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Atlanta (1906), Birmingham Terminal Station (1909), the Randolph-Lucas House in Atlanta (1924) and the Fox Theatre in Atlanta (1929) as well as the Aladdin Theater in Cocoa Florida (1924). This building served as the primary court for the county and was the setting for the infamous Willie Earle trial, which gained international attention when 31 white men were acquitted for the murder of a black taxi driver. There is some limited street parking in front and a larger lot in the back. [Review 204 of 2025 - 1259 in South Carolina - 23768 overall]

The current courthouse was built between 1949 and 1950 and was renovated in 1997 with the addition of a new judicial wing. The previous courthouse was completed in 1918. It's been almost a decade exactly since my last review of Greenville, so I thought I would update…read moreit! I live in Metro Atlanta, and I have provided a life of traveling to my children by exploring all things within a 5-hour radius of our home. While there are many great small cities and towns that fit within those parameters (Asheville, Chattanooga, Nashville, Savannah, Charleston), GREENVILLE is perhaps one of our most favored. It really is easy to love this city, whether you're visiting with a family of small children or older children, or as a girl's weekend, bro trip or couple's romantic getaway... it's perfect for any group and equally as exciting for someone flying solo. [ THINGS TO DO ] As I said in my first review... You're first stop hands down should be Falls Park! Located right in the middle of Downtown Greenville, this is THEE BEST LOOKING city park I've ever seen. Truly a hidden gem! The waterfall, the historic buildings and monuments, the BEAUTIFULLY landscaped park, walking trails and awesome suspended pedestrian bridge make this a peaceful place to relax, read a book, stop for some ice cream or hit the trails. Now that our children are older and one has turned 21, we find ourselves checking out bars and breweries. We had a good time @ Yee-Haw on our last visit and finished the night spectacularly @ GROUP THERAPY Pub & Playground! Words cannot express just how much fun that place is on the right night with the right group! We weren't sure what life would look like with our boys once they became adults, but I can say this place gave us a night to remember! Loved the atmosphere and karaoke singers! Renting bikes and riding Swamp Rabbit Trail should also be on any outdoorsy person's list! [ PLACES TO EAT ] Restaurants are plentiful and using the Yelp search feature for "best restaurants" in Greenville will net you a treasure trove of options. Places I would recommend for a good meal are: Jamaican Mi I'rie, Barley's Pizza, Grill Marks, Fork & Plough and Bacon Brothers. Places still on our list to try are Green Fetish, Swordfish Cocktail Club, Aryana Afghan Cuisine, Sully's Steamers, Society Sandwich Bar, Belladina's Pizzeria and Trappe Door. [ KIDS SCAVENGER HUNT ] Lots for the kids to see and do, but a MUST is to play 'Mice on Main'. It's a scavenger hunt along Main Street to find little bronze mice. Kids read clues and search the streets to find them, which is a lot of fun. Mast General store has old school candy and other items with an old school General Store feel, and you can also pick-up clue sheets for the mice hunt here. [ USE GREENVILLE AS A BASE CAMP FOR HIKING ] Our main objective when visiting Greenville in the past was to hike one or several of the hundreds of nearby waterfalls. This area is called "The Land of Waterfalls" and for good reason. Many are within 1 hours drive of the city and I promise you they will not disappoint! Our favorite waterfalls are Triple Falls and High Falls in Dupont Forest, Rainbow Falls in Jones Gap, Reedy Cove Falls near Sunset and Catawba Falls near Asheville. [ WHERE TO STAY ] Hotels are plentiful, but our two favorite stays have been: SPRINGHILL SUITES DOWNTOWN - https://www.yelp.com/biz/springhill-suites-by-marriott-greenville-2?osq=springhill+suites+downtown and CAMBRIA HOTEL off Woodruff Road - https://www.yelp.com/biz/cambria-hotel-greenville-greenville Also worth mentioning is AC HOTEL, which we haven't visited yet but plan to - https://www.yelp.com/biz/ac-hotel-greenville-greenville?osq=AC+Hotel [ FINAL THOUGHTS ] I highly recommend Greenville as a great getaway for any METRO ATLANTA RESIDENT or short driving distance cities such as Chattanooga, Knoxville, Charlotte, and Charleston. You're gonna have a good time here, I can all but guarantee it! ENJOY!!! 2022 / 111

However, you can drive to the top where there is parking. If you do that, you'll miss the Jackson County Confederate Memorial that is midway on the stairs. The Historical Jackson County Courthouse is a 1913 Classical Revival structure that towers on a hill above and at the end of Sylva's main street. It has served here until 1994 when the new Justice Center opened a couple of miles away. It sat unused for several years until it was refreshed and restored, reopening in 2011 as the Jackson County Public Library complex that includes the Jackson County Historical Association, the Genealogical Society, and the Arts Council. Two stories and constructed of painted brick, it has a monumental portico at the front with large classical columns and is topped with a three-stage cupola above the central block. If you've been to Marshall NC, it does look a lot like the Madison County Courthouse. [Review 531 of 2026 - 4626 in North Carolina - 25713 overall]
