My local branch didn't have the book I wanted, so I took a day trip to Hall County to snag a copy of the book I was looking for. I called first, and they assured me they had the copy there and that they would set it aside for my arrival. Parking was free and easy. There were several spaces available right up front. Of course, I was there in the afternoon on a weekday. I imagine it might get busy if an event is going on, but it looked like they had more parking out back and on the street. The librarian was super nice and directed me to the books on hold and answered my questions about books available in other languages. I ended up leaving there with the book I was looking for as well as a few books in Spanish so that I could further practice my low level comprehension skills. I was able to extend my checkout of these books online and then return them to my local branch library instead of having to make the drive to Hall County again. Although, I wouldn't have minded it. Their library still has that "new car scent". Not really, but the place is pristine and welcoming.

Today, I needed to send a birthday present to my friend in California and a box of Halloween goodies to a friend serving in the military overseas. The smiling clerk helped me decide on two day shipping for my friend's birthday present (so my gift won't be *too* belated), and she also helped me pack a flat rate box so everything will still be in ship-shape when unpacked in the Middle East. Okay, so you will have to scrounge for a quarter to feed the meter at this location, but the amazingly helpful and efficient staff certainly make up for it! And isn't anything better than that horrid parking lot at Beechwood where the next nearest post office is?

I attended the House for a wedding which was hosted outside on the lawn just by the gardens. Following the ceremony, we were able to go inside the house and on the porch for a cocktail hour and proceeded to our tables under tents in the back. There is a nice brick area that serves as a dance floor and plenty of space for tables and food.

Since it was a weekend with no classes in session or Bulldogs game underway, parking was easy and the coffee shops and restaurants were pleasantly uncrowded. Athens was founded in the early 1800s at Cedar Shoals, where an old Cherokee trail crossed the Oconee River. Incorporated in 1806 just five years after the University of Georgia opened nearby, the city was named after the classical Greek center of learning. It quickly grew into Georgia's cultural and intellectual heart, with a thriving antebellum economy built on cotton, brickmaking, and textiles. Though the Civil War brought hardship, Athens was spared destruction during Sherman's march and rebounded quickly during Reconstruction. The City Hall building was completed in 1904 and is a blend of Second Empire and Neoclassical styles. Built from Lexington granite and buff brick, it originally housed an auditorium, armory, and offices for city leaders and the Chamber of Commerce. The building has seen several renovations, including a major restoration of its clock tower in 2006-2007. The Georgia Legislature established the county in 1811, combining pieces of Clarke, Elbert, Franklin, Jackson, and Oglethorpe counties. It is the 38th county in the state and was named after James Madison, the nation's fourth president. This is the county seat in Danielsville. The courthouse was erected in 1901 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It has a cruciform design, comparable to the Twiggs County Courthouse (1902-04) and the Clayton County Courthouse. It was designed by architect J.W. Golucke, whose name appears on dozens of Georgia courthouses, including Baker County, Meriwether County, Schley County, and Worth County, as well as the Fitzpatrick Hotel in Washington and the Secondary Industrial School in Columbus. This is Danielsville's third courthouse, replacing a frame courthouse that had previously replaced a wooden courthouse. The courthouse was renovated in 1983, but a lack of space forced county officials to relocate to a new courthouse in 1996. The roof was restored in 1999-2000, although the structure has remained vacant since 1996. The courthouse square includes a statue of Dr. Crawford Long, who was born in Danielsville in 1815.
