The courthouse was completed in 1915 after the county seat moved from Watkinsville to Athens in 1871. It is designed in an Italian Renaissance style with its buff-yellow brick façade, symmetrical five-story form, and a prominent south-facing portico supported by four monumental columns. A wide cornice runs beneath the fourth story, and the flat roofline gives the structure a dignified, institutional silhouette. There are a number of monuments and memorials on the courthouse grounds including the Athens Confederate Monument, a Carrara marble obelisk originally erected in 1872. There is also a marker honoring Abraham Baldwin, founder of the University of Georgia and James Camak, who helped establish the Georgia Railroad. While there is plenty of street parking, the building is completely locked on the weekends. I've read that the interior is impressive and includes some beautiful artwork. The Georgia Legislature established the county in 1811, combining pieces of Clarke, Elbert, Franklin, Jackson, and Oglethorpe counties. It is the 38th county in the state and was named after James Madison, the nation's fourth president. This is the county seat in Danielsville. The courthouse was erected in 1901 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It has a cruciform design, comparable to the Twiggs County Courthouse (1902-04) and the Clayton County Courthouse. It was designed by architect J.W. Golucke, whose name appears on dozens of Georgia courthouses, including Baker County, Meriwether County, Schley County, and Worth County, as well as the Fitzpatrick Hotel in Washington and the Secondary Industrial School in Columbus. This is Danielsville's third courthouse, replacing a frame courthouse that had previously replaced a wooden courthouse. The courthouse was renovated in 1983, but a lack of space forced county officials to relocate to a new courthouse in 1996. The roof was restored in 1999-2000, although the structure has remained vacant since 1996. The courthouse square includes a statue of Dr. Crawford Long, who was born in Danielsville in 1815. Visiting this facility is incredibly frustrating. One would expect organization and…read moreprofessionalism but that is far from the case. I visited the solicitors office and the employees did not know how to access my file...I needed it to initiate a suit to get procedures in line. I was the person who furnished the file several years ago, so I should have had no problem. They referred me to Victims Assistance, who in turn referred me to the Sheriff Department to have a police report filled out....WHICH was already on my file secured in the Solicitors Office! I contacted Victims Assistance again and told me to get with the Solicitors Office. Needless to say, I'm having to go to SC Legal Aid to proceed further. I sincerely hope that others have better experiences. And good luck trying to figure out who are actually employed there....no dress code or identifying badges.

The first courthouse for Anderson County was completed in 1828. In 1850, a grand edifice was added…read moreand the building's brick walls were plastered over and painted white. Four large Grecian columns were erected on a portico at each end. On the buildings western end, a belfry tower was added with a large bell that could be rung to signify the time, or to notify citizens of special events such as weddings or funerals or to sound a civil defense alert or fire alarm. By the 1890's, the county had outgrown the courthouse and in 1898, a mid-Victorian style courthouse was built on the site of the old one. This new building is today the "historic" courthouse, which was renovated to include an addition on the east side of the building in 1939 and an annex added in 1940. The "new" courthouse was built in 1991 though the "historic" courthouse was updated with new electrical and plumbing. Today, the historic courthouse of Anderson County contains administrative offices and hosts County Council meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of each month.
