This restaurant is located next to on the Munich Cathedral and near Marienplatz. However you can enjoy a nice meal far from the noise. The restaurant has a nice outdoor area overlooking the cathedral. The food we ordered was very good and the beer was great. The portions size were decent. Our server was very helpful and walked us through the menu. The entire family enjoyed our time at this location. My understanding is that the beer I had, is only served by this establishment. One of the few places we've seen with a variety of beef options. Quality food despite being near the Marian Platz touristy area. Bavarian beef Bouillon - with a Wagyu liver dumpling Clear broth, light bodied with parsley bits and several chickpeas. So the "dumpling" is actually a gigantic meatball made of beef and liver. Still, if you're not a fan of liver, you won't like this much. Pretzel - comes cold and hardened, which continues to confound me why they are not warmed prior to serving. Hmmm.... 1/2 roasted Bavarian Duck On the dry side, per most German cuisine, but some bites are tender and the dark gravy helps put it down. You can also replace the gelatinous potato ball with gratin potatoes if you prefer. Wagyu Bolognese Not a bad choice if you're craving Italian. The meat-noodle ratio is excellent. Andechser kaiserschmarrn Carmelized Bavarian shredded pancake (in square bits) with stewed apples and vanilla ice cream. Great food, service, and decor! Sat outside one day and on the second floor another. Service is attentive and the host walks around and checks in with guest and staff. The best thing about this restaurant is they have the traditional dishes but some great alternatives if you need a break from the traditional dishes. Great Italian wine, side salad was tasty and the bell peppers cleansed the palate. Steak tips were good but the sauce made it. Really good and enough to mix in with the spatzle. 7/6/2024 - Back here again, I was here about a year ago and this time brought 2 friends with me. On the trip. Raining hard right now. Ordered two ANDECHSER SAUSAGES PLATTER 2 Nuremberger, 2 spicy sausages, 1 Wagyu Salsiccia with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes and one GRILLED KNUCKLE OF SUCKLING PIG with Andechser beer gravy, potato dumplings and green cabbage salad. Two beers and an apple strudel. Everything was very good. The Sausages were good, except the Wagyu sausage and the pig skin was excellent. The food arrived about 10 minutes after we ordered it. They have German and English menus. This is an authentic Bavarian style place to eat. Odd thing this time the waiter asked how much to include for a tip. Last year we never were asked and never been asked by anyone in Germany for a tip, never ever asked for a tip. A total of 3 stars for the food and service. I took 2 stars off for asking how much to tip. The total bill was 100 euro or about $110 US dollars. If the waiter didn't ask for a tip I would have 4 or 5 stars. Only in USA do they ask for tips for everything. So far in Denmark, Norway and Switzerland they don't ask for tips. Again, first time I was ever asked to tip in Germany and I use to live here. Awesome food, just off the main Marianplatz square. We sat outside and had great service. The traditional Bavarian platter was a great starter for all of us to try. I'm not a big meat person at all, but I loved the beef tartare and other spreads on the pretzels. Even the sausages were so much better than I'm used to in the States. I had the celery schnitzel, which was delicious enough that I'd like to try to make it at home, and that says a lot since I'm not a cook! My daughter had the bolognese. I think she had spaghetti bolognese at least once in every country we visited this summer, and this was her favorite. My husband had the Wagyu beef burger and really enjoyed it. If you haven't had enough sausage yet, get the Andechser platter. The sausages range from a wood fired grill taste to spicy. We were recommended the white sausage on the side also. Literally behind the Munich Cathederal. They offer up a pretty typical German menu with what one would come to expect. Today we had hoped for some Cordon Bleu but that one thing, they don't have!!! We decided on some Weiner Schnitzel with traditional German potato salad. We were in a bit of a hurry so no beer for us today. We had "table water" and it's free! Yay! 6 hour layover in Münich coming from Thessaloniki Greece. Hoped on the S-bahn from the airport and a quick 45 minutes later were at city center Marienplatz, Munich. Found this joint getting lost on the way to a place I bookmarked. Staff was very friendly and recommended the Schnitzel which we ordered, it came with lingonberry, yummy! Table water was free, food came within 20 minutes. The Schnitzel was not dry nor overly moist, it was perfect! Usually in Germany you can leave pocket change as a gratuity but the waitress asked if we wanted to add it to the bill which I guess is convenient but can be uncomfortable for some. Quantity was more than enough and it came with traditional German potato salad lathered in vinegar. Meal was a little over €40 for both of us, Central Europe is generally more expensive, keep that in mind if you travel to Switzerland and Austrian also. I see this as overpriced tourist food. We were really hungry and cold, so it was worth it for us, but I would not normally go somewhere like this. They also seemed to have 2-3 different menus that they were using, which was a little confusing. I think based on where you were seated, you got a specific menu, but everyone came in the same way. Maybe I missed something in translation there. Overall the food was bland and the fried stuff was soaked in oil, but it was warmer than outside, so that was a win. read more

This is so far my favorite Bavarian restaurant, better than the Ratskeller which was in the beautiful castle-like tow hall building. The platter was my favorite with sliced radish which is really great to clean the palate. The cheese and beef tartar were my second favorite on the platter. Hands down best food in Munich! I tired a few different restaurants in Munich and there's definitely no place like Andechser. I able to get everything I wanted in one plate (Veal Schnitzel, Veal Meatball with Cabbage & Wagyu Beef Sausage with Sauerkraut) Veal Schnitzel: Fried perfectly! The breading was not falling apart from the meat, the flavor of it was just the right saltiness. Add a little bite of the secrete sauce (taste like a some sort of wischesere & A1 sauce) will make it taste even better. Veal Meat Ballsl with cabbage: The cabbage is lightly stayed and the meal balls were pan seared perfectly. It may be a tab bit more salt for some, but for me, it goes well with the saltiness of the cabbage. Wagyu Beef Sausage with Sauerkraut: OMG, this is the best! The sauerkraut was not overly salty and goes perfectly well with the wagy beef sausage. The sausage alone was also extremely tasty and wasn't loaded with salt. Excellent local food offerings, and your menu options cover about 10 pages, so take your time to peruse. I'm a simple guy, and view German fare as comfort food, so I normally stick to the basics when I come here (sausages, potatoes, etc.). The 6-Sausage platter offers 3 types of sausages, 2 of which are spicy. Lots of flavor going on there, and they are served w/ generous portions of mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. We went on a walking tour of Munich and our guide recommended this place, so we took him up on the recommendation and so glad that we did! From the moment we walked in, we were warmly greeted and seated. Our waiter was friendly, funny and showed great hospitality. This place is legit. We came here on first night in Munich after it was recommended by one of our German family friends. It was packed and full of locals...thank goodness we had a reservation. We were seated in a cozy room in the basement. It was a little cramped as we were squeezed between two huge tables seating 8-10 people. Surprisingly it did not get too loud. The table comes with a basket of bread and pretzels which you can enjoy with their sweet mustard sauce (yum!). The bread could have been fresher/warmed up. For appetizers, we split the cheese and sausage plate and potato soup. The spicy sausage was one of my favorites.The soup was smooth, creamy, and so flavorful. For an entree, I had the sirloin steak which came with these cheesy potatoes. The steak was cooked perfectly but the potatoes were a little cold. Like I said, I was super hungry and they tasted delicious soo it didn't turn me off that much.The meal was heavy but perfect for a cold winter evening. Unfortunately we would not recommend this establishment after our experience here. The service was horrendous and it felt the server was discriminating against us. We sat for an hour and a half waiting and the waiter never came to take our order. After waiting patiently for an hour plus we decided to finally call him over to take our order and he ignored us. He turned around, made eye contact and then walked away. We gave him the benefit other doubt but over the next 30 minutes he did that multiple times even after trying to flag him down. During this time two groups of locals were sat, had their drunk and food orders taken, ate, and paid/left while we sat there ignored so it wasn't like he was so busy. I felt we were patient, were being respectful, not being loud or obnoxious but because we weren't German he ignored us. Would not recommend this place. read more

The food was incredible and our server went out of her way to help us with recommendations on beer (Andechs was awesome!) and food and was really fun and energetic throughout service to us and the others around us. I had the Veal Schnitzel which was perfectly breaded and seasoned, served with fresh lemon and cranberry. It came with the most amazing potato salad- perfectly balanced splash of acidity and creamy potatoes. I had a few bites of my husband's sauerkraut and meatloaf dish and loved it too- even though I'm typically not a fan of sauerkraut, I wanted more! The spicy sausages were good as well. Our whole experience felt like a warm welcome to Germany thanks to the personalized service and delicious food. The only downside to note was that the huge pretzels they automatically set at your table are €1 each (Our server was nice enough to let us know up front) and they were really salty and just ok. This is really more of a 2.5 stars, but to be generous, I am rounding up. We were looking for traditional German fare in the Marionplatz area. (Which I found to be filled with stores you could find anywhere in the US: Apple, Louis Vuitton, Starbucks (!), etc. and somehow that took away from the charm of the area). We stumbled upon this restaurant. It was packed on the patio area (a good sign!) but there were tables available in the basement area of the restaurant. I found it to be okay. I had some sort of sausage stir-fry, which was good but not great. You also get a recycled basket of pretzels and breads, which were a little more stale than I might have hoped. My travel companion had the Wiener schnitzel, which he enjoyed. Beer was good. I had a dunkel, which I enjoyed, and that was the most redeeming thing about this dinner. I found the waitstaff to be somewhat annoyed, abrupt, and unhappy. I went to use the bathroom, and coming back there were some customers arguing with the servers, and blocking my way back to my table. They watched me struggle to get back, but just stood there, not willing to move. At the end, the server hovered over us, and she took a generous tip for herself, while making change. We ate here twice. Indoor and outdoor patio seating and a another covered patio for just the bar. In chilly weather they have red blankets they will give you. If they are busy and you want a table to yourself/selves you may have to wait for one. If you are two people at a four-top they will seat people with you. It's close quarters, but can be fun to meet people that way. Pretzels were put on the table but they will ask you to share with the table next to you. They will ask you how many you ate and just charge you for those. Food is delicious. They have some great sausage combination plates as well as lighter options like salmon. I loved their sauerkraut and creamed cabbage! The Cheese Spatzle with fried onions on top is a little taste of southern mac n cheese in Germany! Delicious!
