We wanted to find a nice place to eat dinner with hearty food for the cold weather and came across Zwickl. We walked in at 7pm on a Tuesday night and even without reservations we were seated immediately. Our table had comfy pillows for our backs and we had plenty of room to store our coats and bags. I must also mention the bathrooms in this review, they are in the basement and have a unique jungle decoration with animal sounds like mooing piped in. My husband said the men's bathroom was also uniquely designed and had two urinals facing each other through a red heart. Now, back to the food, we ordered off the daily specials menu and were happy to see that one side was in German and the other side was in English. The regular menu also had English translations, and both of our servers spoke fluent English. We ordered the potato and vegetable stew and the potato dumplings with bacon and mountain cheese and salad. The portions were huge and between two people we could not finish those two items. The quality of food was delicious with amazing seasoning. The salad has a tasty tangy dressing and we highly enjoyed our meal. My husband and I came here for his birthday dinner when we were visiting Munich, and it did not disappoint! We were seated right away without a reservation (with the understanding of a 90 minute limit), and had a cozy table for two in this small pub. We each ordered beers (of course), which were super light and fresh. Since it was my first time in Germany, I had the schnitzel, which is served with potatoes and cranberry sauce. It was amazing! We had a chocolate cake for dessert to wrap up birthday celebrations, and it was one of the richest chocolate cakes I've ever had. Found this cozy tavern on my first night in Munich. An hour or more wait for their packed patio. Opted for and was seated immediately inside. Impeccable was the service. Time stood still here with our great sips of beer; hearty and delicious "Rinder Goulash"; and, their decadent "Karamellisierter KAISERSCHMARRN mit Zwetschgenroster und Apfelmus". Friendly service and very good food. Was worried it would be touristy but filled with locals and local charm.

We enjoyed our lunch outside in their small seating area. The tables are very close together but there is inside seating if you need a little more elbow room. I thoroughly enjoyed my salad with chicken breast and mushrooms. The mushrooms were very good! My husband had the meatballs. He gave them a thumbs up. The server was attentive and his English is way better than my German. The only time he seemed to stumble was when I asked about the wines offered. Delicious Bavarian food. We visited Zwickl on a Friday night, and it was about half full even though they do not have many tables overall. The atmosphere was casual and friendly. We tried the obazda, cheese dumplings, and balls of spinach and cheese. The obazda was delicious when all of the components were combined together. We ended up wishing we had more bread for the sauce until our mains arrived. Both plates had two decadent balls of dough and cheese paired with a gigantic salad with a delicious balsamic dressing. Overall, we had a great experience at Zwickl, and I would highly recommend them for Bavarian food in Munich. read more

Thought about giving this a 4/5 since there were really only 2 veggie options, but the one I had was AMAZING. I wasn't even that hungry and I absolutely devoured the Spinach and Cheese Pflanzerl. The other vegetarian option (other than salads) was the Käsespatzle (classic) but that was generally the vegetarian option at a ton of other places so I opted for the Pflanzerl and was NOT disappointed. It also came with a salad which was SUPER good. I honestly don't even like salads that much but this salad was crunchy and umami and paired so well with the Pflanzerl. Best meal I had in Munich! Zwickl is your standard Bavarian pub. It seems they're a bit cozier place than the others. They have a small inside and outside seating. One thing they are known for is their "Pflanzerl" or "meatballs." So if you wanna try some good Bavarian meatballs, this is the place to go. They do have other snitzels and stuff on their menu, but it seems like most of the menu is meatballs. Don't come in here looking for sausages, I don't think they have them. For appetizer, I tried their bread and cheese or Bauernbrot mit Obazda. Obazda is Bavarian cheese that reminded me a lot of Pimento Cheese. It's soft and butter like with a lot of flavor. You can get this at most Bavarian places, and Zwickl's didn't disappoint. I tried their Zwickl Pflanzerl. It is pork and beef meatballs with Potato salad. The meatballs were pretty tasty. It was nice and tender, and I loved the flavor. They packed the meatballs dense. It's not a "loose" meatball. The potato salad was good too. Their Schweinbraten was delicious as well. It was cooked perfectly and was nice and tender and full of flavor from its gravy. I also liked their prezel dumplings. The service was typical German, but I felt they seemed a LOT more friendly and chill than the other places. Like most places in its vicinity, their English was great, better than my German. To eat we had the Truffled Potato Soup with croutons and the Bavarian Noodles with cheese, deep fried onions, and salad. I originally found this restaurant on tripadvisor. It's always difficult to know your schedule and seek out a restaurant in advance when you are travelling. We were jetlagged and it was 3:30 pm on a Saturday. We stumbled upon it and I remembered reading the favorable reviews so popped in. At first they hesitated about serving us without a reservation. Even at such a non conventional dining hour, they were pretty full inside, but when they asked if we would be eating they accommodated us. We tried the 3 meatball combo which was enough to feed two people in itself. We tried the spinach and cheese, the shrimp and the chicken. They were all fantastic. Each had such a unique flavor but probably our favorite was the chicken which tasted like a delicious schnitzel. Each meatball came with its own side and was presented beautifully. We also order the kasespatzle which was like the finest mac and cheese I've ever had in my life! The service was actually really good. Our waitress actually advised us not to order the soup as it was way too much food. Good advice as we couldn't finish everything. Would definitely return! read more

Long overdue update. Was back in München for Oktoberfest in late 2017. Decided to give this place another try and NOT order noodles this time. Ordered one of the specials and my friends ordered meatballs. Holy crap, the special was DELICIOUS. Lecker lecker. :) Service was friendly--the staff also speaks English and menus are available in Englisch as well. If i remember correctly though, daily specials are only in Deutsch. This recommendation came from a fellow elite yelper who I reached out to. I loved the semi private platz/square where it was located. I hit it on a beautiful day so many of the beer gardens were suffocatingly crowded. The bread was delicious- this says nothing because I've yet to have a bad piece of bread in Germany. After a long day of breaking porcelain plates in the front yard of a friend's house before a wedding in Germering (I believe you Bavarian types call this event a "Polterabend"), a handful of friends and myself had a hankering to hit downtown Munich for a quick bite before calling it a night. We just sort of strolled though the alleyways of the city center and settled on this cute outdoor restaurant Zwicki. You can tell this this place is more popular with tourists than the locals as almost all of their menus are in english, and all of their specials of the day were written in english on a chalkboard as well. But whether this eatery is designed for out-of-towners or not, the food and service was really superb. I personally only had a small dish of mushrooms in cream sauce accompanied with house made dumplings. These particular dumplings were far and away the best I had while in Munich for 5+ days and the simplicity of the mushrooms and cream rounded out a straightforward, yet very tasty snack. We also had a chance to try a local Riesling as well as Bavaria's first whiskey - they were both quite nice and satisfied exactly what we were looking for. While I'm sure there are more authentic dives for Bavarian food in München, Zwicki was perfectly satisfying. I'm sure you could do much worse elsewhere. read more

I liked this place alot. We went for dinner after an afternoon at the Viktualenmarkt. The restaurant itself is on a side-street near the market, a bit quieter and intimate, with outdoor seating great for people watching. I liked the inside - stylish and modern (and a bit eccentric - visit the bathroom complete with barnyard noises to see what I mean :) Food: amazing bread and herbed cream cheese, really excellent wild herb salad. For the main i had one of the specials - a risotto with mushrooms fresh from the market, with meatballs. The meat was great, though I'd have to say my favourite was the spinach and alpine cheese, which just melts in your mouth. Also tried the quark balls with truffle as well as the Käsespätzle, which were great as well (it's hard to mess up anything with cheese and truffles!) Only downside was the service - a bit long and our I found our waitress rude. All round though, great place, great atmosphere. read more
