The brunch buffet at Ancaster Mill has been on my must-eat radar since 2020 when a co-worker raved about the seafood and carving selections. This year, I booked a few months ahead for a reservation and visited with a group of friends.
I will definitely say that the serene setting that the other reviews raved about is to be honest just a small man-made waterfall located in the outskirts of the restaurant and venue. More touristy for-the-gram than natural beauty. It can be accessed from the guest parking, where you walk across a bridge over a stream into some greenery then down a few flights of stairs, passing a gazebo with a flashy chandelier. Definitely screams wedding venue. This reminded me of the waterfall up north at Richmond Green Community Centre, but that one is definitely bigger and more in nature than here.
Food wise, while they did have the different stations as outlined on the website menu, the offerings were subpar, with only 1-2 outstanding items from each station. I really wish they had a better placement for the dessert spread instead of having it in the hallway outside of the hot foods room. I didn't take many pictures because of the strict 2 hour seating limit.
HOT FOOD ROOM
Carving Station:
- prime rib roast (my favourite meat option, IMO better than the one at The Keg, iykyk)
- beef ribs (tender but under-seasoned, a bit oily)
- smoked ham (way too salty. I was hoping for the roasted pig mentioned in other reviews)
Sides/Specialty Foods:
- roasted small potatoes (these were crispy on the outside, fluffy and tender on the inside, really tasty)
- a selection of veggie options and perogies
- curry salmon
- pre-made eggs benedict (perfect amount of hollandaise, overall creamy and satisfying)
- fried chicken and waffles (chicken was well-seasoned, very juicy and tender, waffles a bit too filling to have for a buffet). On an a-la-carte day, I would definitely come back for that as a standalone dish.
- omelette/egg station (I liked that it was made to order but each order took so long that I didn't feel like wasting 20 min standing in a line for two sunny side up eggs that I could make at home)
- crepe station (location was easily overlooked as it was next to all the meats. I asked the chef to surprise me and they simply put all three ingredients into the crepe while chatting away with a fellow staff. Nutella definitely does not go well with mixed berries and spiced applies as crepe stuffing. It was mushy and bland and not okay.)
COLD FOODs (open area in the dining room next to the bar):
Seafood station:
- snow crab legs (little meat, too salty. Tasted like the Costco frozen pack. We all expected better quality)
- cocktail shrimp
- smoked salmon
- oysters (freshly shucked, very small, not much meat or flavour, and I kept eating bits of the shell. I guess I prefer West Coast oysters more?)
Deli station:
- charcuterie
- heirloom caprese salad (this was the highlight of this buffet for me. The green and red heirloom tomatoes were oh-so-fresh and went amazingly with the pesto sauce, mozzarella, and fresh basil. I had two entire plates of this.)
- beet salad with whipped goat cheese (this was good too)
- deviled eggs
- mushroom arancini (highly praised by our server, I feel like it's like a croquette stuffed with mushroom risotto laced with truffle oil. Pretty standard, easily filling though)
Dessert station:
- a selection of pies and cakes
- lavender meringues (the egg-white eggy taste stood out too much, I could not swallow it.)
- chocolate and vanilla ice cream
- bread pudding
- apple crisp (this was the dessert highlight for me)
Drinks:
- all you can drink sparkling wine, mimosas and caesars along with non-alc beverages like coffee, tea, lemonade, grapefruit juice, and orange juice. Not sure if it was intentional but our server forgot our table orders more than a couple of times and we ended up only having max 3 mimosas per person.
Overall I feel like 77$ is a steep price for what we got to eat and drink. The unlimited prime rib, snow crab legs and oysters were the main factors of how I convinced the group to visit, and only 1/3 being satisfactory was a bit damaging to my rep as the foodie lol. I think if it was 55$ AYCE and drinks were extra, that would have been better because then we'd have access to more alcohol options.
3.5/5
And if there ever was an a-la-carte menu, I would definitely return again for the heirloom caprese salad, fried chicken/waffles and the apple crisp as my app, main, and dessert. read more
