Steak Frites
Laura T.

The ambiance of this restaurant is the main selling point. We were seated in view of a nice waterfall which complements the rustic features around the mill. The menu selection was limited and as expected higher priced. We inquired about the appetizers and were advised many of them were small and really not portioned for more than 1-2 people. It didn't stop us but just good for you to know. The steak frites were delicious, came with as nice crème and steak was soft and tender. The mushroom melt was a little too greasy with the added butter on the bread then aioli and cheese. The fried chicken sandwich was a hit but beware, it's very sauce and will be a mess to eat. The blueberry salad lack flavour and sounds better than it tastes. Our server and the assistants were courtesy and nice however one of my friends did request for her salad to undressed but it came out fully dressed, we didn't make a fuss but our orders were quite simple and the restaurant wasn't busy, we'd expect a regular order.

Beautiful property but food was pretty average and service was not something of a fine dine. Although they made our day special by giving us a beautiful and delicious complimentary birthday cake for my husband.

The brunch buffet at Ancaster Mill has been on my must-eat radar since 2020 when a co-worker raved about the seafood and carving selections. This year, I booked a few months ahead for a reservation and visited with a group of friends. I will definitely say that the serene setting that the other reviews raved about is to be honest just a small man-made waterfall located in the outskirts of the restaurant and venue. More touristy for-the-gram than natural beauty. It can be accessed from the guest parking, where you walk across a bridge over a stream into some greenery then down a few flights of stairs, passing a gazebo with a flashy chandelier. Definitely screams wedding venue. This reminded me of the waterfall up north at Richmond Green Community Centre, but that one is definitely bigger and more in nature than here. Food wise, while they did have the different stations as outlined on the website menu, the offerings were subpar, with only 1-2 outstanding items from each station. I really wish they had a better placement for the dessert spread instead of having it in the hallway outside of the hot foods room. I didn't take many pictures because of the strict 2 hour seating limit. HOT FOOD ROOM Carving Station: - prime rib roast (my favourite meat option, IMO better than the one at The Keg, iykyk) - beef ribs (tender but under-seasoned, a bit oily) - smoked ham (way too salty. I was hoping for the roasted pig mentioned in other reviews) Sides/Specialty Foods: - roasted small potatoes (these were crispy on the outside, fluffy and tender on the inside, really tasty) - a selection of veggie options and perogies - curry salmon - pre-made eggs benedict (perfect amount of hollandaise, overall creamy and satisfying) - fried chicken and waffles (chicken was well-seasoned, very juicy and tender, waffles a bit too filling to have for a buffet). On an a-la-carte day, I would definitely come back for that as a standalone dish. - omelette/egg station (I liked that it was made to order but each order took so long that I didn't feel like wasting 20 min standing in a line for two sunny side up eggs that I could make at home) - crepe station (location was easily overlooked as it was next to all the meats. I asked the chef to surprise me and they simply put all three ingredients into the crepe while chatting away with a fellow staff. Nutella definitely does not go well with mixed berries and spiced applies as crepe stuffing. It was mushy and bland and not okay.) COLD FOODs (open area in the dining room next to the bar): Seafood station: - snow crab legs (little meat, too salty. Tasted like the Costco frozen pack. We all expected better quality) - cocktail shrimp - smoked salmon - oysters (freshly shucked, very small, not much meat or flavour, and I kept eating bits of the shell. I guess I prefer West Coast oysters more?) Deli station: - charcuterie - heirloom caprese salad (this was the highlight of this buffet for me. The green and red heirloom tomatoes were oh-so-fresh and went amazingly with the pesto sauce, mozzarella, and fresh basil. I had two entire plates of this.) - beet salad with whipped goat cheese (this was good too) - deviled eggs - mushroom arancini (highly praised by our server, I feel like it's like a croquette stuffed with mushroom risotto laced with truffle oil. Pretty standard, easily filling though) Dessert station: - a selection of pies and cakes - lavender meringues (the egg-white eggy taste stood out too much, I could not swallow it.) - chocolate and vanilla ice cream - bread pudding - apple crisp (this was the dessert highlight for me) Drinks: - all you can drink sparkling wine, mimosas and caesars along with non-alc beverages like coffee, tea, lemonade, grapefruit juice, and orange juice. Not sure if it was intentional but our server forgot our table orders more than a couple of times and we ended up only having max 3 mimosas per person. Overall I feel like 77$ is a steep price for what we got to eat and drink. The unlimited prime rib, snow crab legs and oysters were the main factors of how I convinced the group to visit, and only 1/3 being satisfactory was a bit damaging to my rep as the foodie lol. I think if it was 55$ AYCE and drinks were extra, that would have been better because then we'd have access to more alcohol options. 3.5/5 And if there ever was an a-la-carte menu, I would definitely return again for the heirloom caprese salad, fried chicken/waffles and the apple crisp as my app, main, and dessert.

What a serene setting! It's a perfect place for a celebration! We were only aware of this place because we got a gift certificate. But after our visit to their Sunday brunch, we would definitely come back for brunch. The brunch is a little pricey for $75 per person but it is an all you eat that includes seafood like raw oysters, jumbo shrimps and a huge selection of hot food like omelette and crepe stations, prime rib and desserts! And all you can drink like mimosas, caesars, juices, tea and coffee! And a stunning waterfall view! All in all, we had a great time and we'll likely come back but next time, I will try to book a time closer to 12pm as we couldn't quite eat a lot at 10am.

The Sunday brunch never fails to disappoint The spread was awesome as always with a setting to match The Benny, bacon and oysters are my favs... though the salads were great too, I find it awfully hard to eat healthy at this brunch Kudos to the young lad who was shucking the oysters ... thank you for your service young man Our server ( Thea/ Tia ) was absolutely outstanding and stood out in sharp contrast to the team at the entry point/coat check who seemed to be having some serious trouble breaking into a smile and be welcoming Will certainly be back but will certainly avoid the girls at the reception if I possibly can Well done again Thea/Tia and Shucker Boy ( my apologies for not getting your name) PS: And thanks for requesting folks not to take more than 6 oysters at a time...only wish you could enforce it

The venue is gorgeous! Seen lots of pictures before I even decided to go. Got seated in a corner furthest to the waterfall, so there wasn't much of a view. But it was a last minute booking so I can't really complain. Its great if you want privacy. They separated the buffet into two sections. One with the bread, salads, charcuterie and seafood. The other with the hot plates, meats, omelette and waffle stations and ofc the dessert bar. Coffee, tea, juice, sparkling wine, mimosas and Caesars are included! $73 pp + tax and tip (July 2023) Halfway through my meal is where it went downhill, i started seeing flies in the first section. I went to grab a piece of watermelon and saw on landed on the fruit board. I waved it away, me and this lady made an intense look at each other acknowledging what just happened. There was a few near our corner and the dessert bar. But then it was like infestation on the cheese board which was located in the centre of the bar and kitchen, but no one realized (?!). I was celebrating my mom's birthday, our server was so cute and made sure she felt special. I settled the bill and everything and then asked to speak to the manager. Chloe came by to greet us and I wanted to make sure this issue was brought to attention as I saw many eat off of those boards. Chloe simply just thanked me for bringing it to her attention..... didn't offer to make it up to me. Beyond disappointed and would not recommend eating here. It was quite unpleasant to see and a huge turn off. Definitely loss all my appetite and would not come back for food until this is addressed.

The image shows a white round plate filled with a variety of breakfast and brunch foods, including fried chicken, roast beef, ham, eggs, and other cooked items. The plate is placed on a wooden table with a fork and knife nearby, and a glass of water and a white cup are visible in the background. The food appears to be a hearty assortment of breakfast dishes.

Came for Sunday Brunch to celebrate my and a friend's birthday. It was pricey but I think it was worth it given the quality of food like freshly carved prime rib, porchetta (though too salty) and roasted pig in addition to seafood like mussels, raw oyster, cocktail shrimp and crab legs. There's so much variety that you don't see at typical buffets. On top of that the ambiance is really nice. We were sat in the room facing the waterfall which was nice. It was also Halloween weekend so all of the staff were dressed up which was cool but weird at the same time since my assumption was this was an upscale establishment. Even the deserts were Halloween themed which was cute! Our server was nice though a bit awkward. He came with one cupcake and candle when he asked if there was a bday. When we told him there's 2, he just said "well there's only one cupcake" and walked away lol. There's great hiking trails nearby to walk off all the food afterwards!

I should start this review by saying I do not like buffets. I have never liked buffets. They were never my thing since everyone had access to the food. And then Covid happened and I liked the idea of them even less. Then I found myself at Ancaster Mill for brunch and had to reevaluate this stance because this buffet was great! We got there early-ish (9:15 am) so our first go around wasn't too busy. All the trays were full and were maintained so that people really didn't need to wait for stuff as the staff kept an eye on everything and refilled super quickly. The buffet had an omelet station and a waffle/crepe station, as well as a meat carving station and an oyster shucking station. The free serve areas had breakfast pastries like scones and muffins but also less common, but still delicious, options like perogies, penne, salmon poke, and much more. Of course there was also an awesome dessert section! Everything was delicious though the big hit at our table was the scones with the house made jams and butters. The waitstaff was also so sweet and on top of things. Mimosas were included (as are Caesar's) and they were not stingy when it came to dishing out the alcohol. Also, one woman was waiting for them to refill the eggs Benedict tray and one of the staff noticed and said he'd bring one right to her table since she shouldn't have to wait. The venue is also located over a waterfall and there are such beautiful views while eating. The buffet is spread out between two rooms and if possible the main dining room is where you want to be for the best views. Also, it is a nicer place so some people dress up while others were there in sweatpants and sweatshirts. So no dress code required but I would recommend at least jeans and a nice casual shirt. The one downfall is the price at $70/person. Children are $35 each and under 4 years old are free. My brother-in-law is a firefighter with anaphylactic allergies to peanuts and soy protein. He was able to eat almost everything and eat he did. He definitely got his money's worth and then some! So if you're someone who can eat a lot or you just enjoy the lovely views, the price isn't a huge bother. Or if you're celebrating, it's a nice treat and you get a special dessert from the back! All in all, I was very happy with this buffet and would return, high price and all!

Duck breast salad

We were visiting Hamilton for a day trip and looking for lunch options on a weekend. Arrived at this place around 1:30-2pm with Reserva, took a long while before anyone served us with the food order. In general, the food quality was okay but not wowing, ambiance was really nice surrounded with nice garden and fountain views but service was completely missing. It took us an hour at least before we get our order, and also took forever to grab someone for the bill. We tried their chicken sandwich. Nothing special. The gnocchi was okay. The duck breast salad was my favourite, quite refreshing. Overall, the food quality was 3.5 star, environment was 4 star with poor 2-star service. Only come here if you are not that hungry and not in a hurry.

Standing inside the Ancaster Mill dining room - The image shows a man in casual attire walking through a restaurant interior with a buffet setup on the left side and dining tables on the right. The restaurant has a high ceiling with dark wooden beams and decorative hanging light fixtures. Patrons are seated at tables near large windows, and some are serving themselves at the buffet. The space features a mix of modern and classic decor elements, including chandeliers and patterned chairs.

Loved it! My wife thought it was a bit pricey at $75 each with beverage. I think it's worthwhile. The service is impeccable, the food (brunch) is fantastic and there is beautiful scenery. Being so near to my home, this will become a regular spot for us when entertaining visiting guests. I should mention, you have two hours at your table. But two hours is plenty of time.

The best thing about this restaurant is the ambiance. In the summer, the garden patio is divine to dine at - you get to sit and eat by the waterfall, listening to the sound of water as you dine. The food is good - it's typical continental cuisine that you'd get at sit-down wedding receptions. They're usually very busy on weekends. When we were there, there were 1-2 weddings going on at the same time. They were able to partition the areas so that public patio seatings could still occur at the same time as weddings or private events. Making a reservation is a must, and they have a short grace period if you don't show up on time. The drinks selection includes colourful, fruity, and refreshing cocktails in the summer. Food menu is small but includes at least one vegetarian option. Don't forget to bring your camera / phone because its a dining setting is absolutely beautiful. How often do you get to dine with a waterfall in the background? :)

I went to Ancaster Mill for a wedding once, and had the most wonderful wedding dinner there. So, I thought to go back for dinner for my birthday. The Mill is scenic with waterfalls and nice ground to stroll through. The restaurant was quaint with live music performer when I was there. The food we ordered were: Waterfall - a pretty cocktail that was very refreshing Vichyssoise - a leek and potato soup with smoked salmon roe. I don't think it's a good fusion to have the fishy roe in the soup. Also the soup tasted a bit sour. Maybe it's intended? Not sure, but not a fan. Pan seared Halibut with baby potatoes and fennel in a cream sauce - the special of the day. The fish was a bit too well done and chewy, and the cream sauce was a bit sour. My favourite part of the dish was the baby potatoes. Blueberry parfait - great dessert with white chocolate and tonka cremeux, with blueberry compote, polenta crumble, corn cake crisp. This dessert made me think of Autumn. A cozy dessert vibe. The service was a bit slow and confusing. When the server talked about the halibut, she mentioned that it costs around $40. But when the bill came, they charged us for a cod at $60. When we pointed it out, she said the machine is so old that it couldn't be updated to halibut, so they used what was already programmed - cod. Ancaster Mill is such a well established business that I am amused albeit sarcastically, at how they would be so unwilling to upgrade their technology, especially something as essential as the receipt printer. As for the price, she said $60 was the right price for the halibut and apologized for misquoting the price. Nothing more was offered to compensate for the $80 difference ($20 times 4 as 4 of us ordered the halibut). That's a huge difference!!!! Ancaster Mill is supposed to be a well respected business that exemplifies excellence in service and fine dining, but I failed to experience this.

GRILLED CHASSAGNE FARM CORNISH HEN
Andy S.

Food: GRILLED CHASSAGNE FARM CORNISH HEN chicken was cooked in two ways - grilled and fried. Both were good and juicy. Kale and carrot on the side match this dish perfectly. STEAK FRITES Steak was also cooked to our liking and is juicy. Fries is crispy and I can't stop eating them. Environment: we dined at the patio and we sat in a table where we can view the waterfall. Very good experience and comfortable seating Cost is priced fairly for the food and service you are getting. Overall, a good experience and will come back again.

Since the below Yelpers have done an awesome job at summarizing the place, I shall continue with only focusing the experience of this particular event. The lounge has a parking lot in the back. If you are driving and the lounge is on your left, keep driving, there's a few businesses with parking lots in the back. It's safe to park there. This spot is a few streets down from Hess Village so around 2am there is a fun amount of drunken folks walking around. There's a few food places open late if you do get hungry. The crowd this night The Casbah was a VERY interesting mix. This is because it's usually friends/family of the band members. So don't come expecting a select type of crowd. Anything goes here. Since I've brought up the subject of interesting and anything goes, what's up with all the one way roads in Hamilton? The main street (Casbah located to your right) is ALL one way, so if you are anything like me (meaning - nil-ch sense of direction) be careful... you will most likely be driving/facing ONTO coming traffic. (true story), Thankfully, the people here are quite nice. They waved to me (after I waved.. thinking *gosh they're so nice here* I realized why. Made an illegal U turn mid street. They guided me and THEN laughed. Just use the "I'm not from these parts sir". Works every time. There's no chairs and the stage is quite tiny. They have about 4-5 bands play before the main band comes on stage. So if you are travelling, don't rush. They do check ID and stamp you. The smokers section is decent. Again, no seats. You will be working out your legs, unless your kind of a weirdo like me and plop right on the corner edge of the stage. I found beer to be a bit pricey here. There's only one bar located right on the far right corner of the venue, as soon as you walk in. I can only assume, this is where they make money. The bathroom is dinky. Small with 4 stalls. 3 of them have broken handles. Guys kinda just waltz in here, drunk or trying to help a girlfriend etc. So, be super careful. Ask a girlfriend to keep watch at your stall door. The best part about this place? - there's only 1 bathroom section in the whole place. Meaning, you WILL bump into band members. It's pretty cool. Caroline Kawa from Die was the coolest chick in the world. She helped me fix my hair and was SO down to earth. Now if I could just get Metric to play here so I could bump into Emily Haines, I'd die a desert happy girl. Even with all the sketch guys who overhear you talking about how hungry you are and respectively INSIST on walking down the street to get you a poutine, gawk at you from tiny dark corners , I still like this place. It's got a bit of a grunge feel to it so you can really dress how you want- venture into GaGa Land for the night? - I THINK SO! If you're into rocking out, you'll end up having a good time. If you're female, you'll have an even funner time trying to hide behind big equipment "helping" the band through the back door. Yes ladies, there IS a back door. No need to fret about creepers. Once you walk into the hall to the bathrooms, it's straight ahead. No alarms so you can push and run out onto a parking lot facing the main street. You can park here so you can get right into your car. They thought of everything. I like that. xoxo M.
