    The "Rock Writing" section.

I hiked this trail in 2009, and I was glad when I saw that Daniel had listed it on Yelp. I parked at the first parking lot along West Sunset Boulevard nearer Santa Clara than Ivins. There is another parking area on the Ivins side of this trail system. Either will work. I hiked this trail in a counter clockwise direction going on top of the mesa first and checking out the rock art on top. At the far end of the mesa, the trail gets to the other lot and there's a trail to the lower section that brings you along the base of the mesa and along the Santa Clara River. This is where some of the best rock art is to be seen. This is an easy trail to hike and one with some great views of the cliffs on the south side of the river and the sandstone formation on which and around which you hike. If you're in St. George for a show at Tuacahn or you want to escape the crowds at Zion, this is a nice area to enjoy. It doesn't have the majestic cliffs of Zion but it is lovely!

Cool little hike. The petroglyphs were really cool. It's not a difficult hike and I think we could have gone a bit more. I would love to hit it again or possibly run it

The petroglyphs have spiral patterns, which I think are in memory of their legend ancestor Spider Grandmother.

The first half of the trail was mostly flat with sand and lava rocks. The second half was a steady incline starting from the stairs. The end requires a little bit of rock scrambling to reach the cave. The views from inside and around the cave were spectacular. Utah residents ($15 entry fee) and non-residents ($20 entry fee). Decent sized parking lot to the left shortly after entering the state park. Trailhead and restrooms are located across the street from the parking lot. The only con would be that a small portion of the trail was next to the residential area. Short video of the hike for those interested! https://youtu.be/JekEJc_95hg

We live close to the park and have hiked most of the trails. But this one is a hidden treasure that even the Park Manager didn't know about. Hat's off to Jim Martinson (the owner/guide) for: his love of nature, spirit of adventure, and finding & sharing this trail. It's under 3 miles round trip and only a 500' elevation gain, but spectacular views. And some stair-like climbs that are an adrenaline rush! No ropes, but some definite exposure in one spot. The guides; Jim, Martha and Joel, were fantastic! They were very organized, super helpful & friendly and talked about the trail, the geology and life in general. And they very much stressed safety. It was a lot of fun and the quickest 3 hours & best money spent in a long time. Will watch their website, can't wait for another trip.
