This joint is usually packed but I know why...Their sushi is great! I do wish the place was a bit bigger so it isn't hard to get through the tables without telling the other customers sorry or excuse me for having them move out of the way. Each time I come I'll always enjoy a large Sapporo beer and try a new roll to entice my taste buds. This past experience I was a little shocked that one of the servers had taken an argument with the hostess outside. I personally think it would have been professional to take a situation like that in a food workplace to be addressed in the kitchen and away from customers who are outside in the front patiently waiting to be seated indoors. As I left Anaba, there's a sign stating their seeking applicants for dishwasher, servers, host/hostess. Seeing this only showed the reason behind how backed up with customers they were yesterday. Crappy service. Sushi rice no vinegar in it - basically boiled rice. Yellow tail was excellent. Yakisoba was good. "Real crab roll" a rip off @ 9.50. Crab minced so small and mixed with a minute amount of mayo no doubt the crab was out of a can. Totally tasteless - tasted more like spackle than crab. One beer on tap, one roll, 6$ squid salad, yakisoba, two orders of hamachi sushi, one real crab roll --- 62 bucks? Another Mediocre Korean sushi joint. Plan on waiting even when there are open cleared seats at the sushi bar, they make you feel as though they are waiting for a "better couple" or "someone they know" to be seated long before you. The waitress took 30 minutes to bother asking if we would like something to drink, miso, or rice after we were finally seated. This is while there are 3 employees standing 4ft. behind us chatting away ignoring the "I could use a little service look." The food is a 5 out of 10. The sushi chefs have 0 personality, I think the headsets they wear to call in orders to the back are playing music to "tune out" the customer's! We keep trying to go back, 6-8 times now, always the same. The location is great, close to home, harbor, and a yogurt shop, if it weren't for the convenience we would go somewhere our business is appreciated. A local recommended Anaba and she was SO right! I sat at the bar, which in my opinion, is always the best place to sit while having sushi. I got the salmon sashimi to start and the freshness made for a melt in your mouth beginning. Since I am from out of town, I told Ken to make me anything he wanted, but to make it unique to the restaurant. He did not disappoint. The amount of heat was perfect and everything tasted divine. The roll had crab, avocado, scallions, and was topped with chili oil, salmon, and another dressing I could not place. The atmosphere is friendly and the music playing was loud enough to hear, but not so loud that I could not hear conversation. If you're in the area, seek it out. read more

We were waiting to be seated, a group came 15 minutes after us with the same amount of people. One of the group (who seemed to know the host) went and sweet talked the seating host and were able to cut in front of us. This is not acceptable or respectful to customers. We will not be returning. One bad experience can affect your whole perspective of a restaurant. We have been dining at Anaba for nearly 10 years. Usually a 4 star experience. However ..... we had dinner there recently. I ordered the brown rice green tea, as I always do. This tea comes in a tall plastic container with a strainer part way down inside it (the loose tea is under the strainer.) It is extremely hot. When I went to pour the hot tea into my cup, the strainer - which was apparently not properly affixed inside the container - let go. I got the entire steaming hot contents (boiling hot tea and hot wet tea leaves & metal strainer) dumped all over my hand (and table). My hand was scalded and turned red. It hurt like hell! My husband was able to flag down a server, who cleaned it up quickly. I showed my scalded hand to her, and she brought me some ice in a bag, which was kind of her. However -- after that? We became "invisible". None of the wait staff would even look at us, other than dropping our food on the table a few minutes later. I had to awkwardly eat my dinner with one hand, keeping ice on the scalded hand. I had asked to talk to a manager, and no one ever came over. I walked up to the server who gave me the ice and asked who I could talk to in case my hand was burned so badly I needed medical or urgent care. She told me I would have to call the next day. Really? We got our check, paid and left - still with no acknowledgment of the incident. I know things happen and this was an accident, but.... when we got our check? No discount on the meal - and - wait for it - they CHARGED ME FOR THE HOT TEA. Really? Just ..... Really? read more

Nice location in the sea bridge Oxnard harbor. Good place for a date! Waiting can be long sometime but once you get seated it doesn't take long to receive your food. Staff is friendly and quick. The fish is good and fresh. Price is reasonable. Probably a dollar or two more here but the food is good and worth the extra bucks. Every single time I go for dinner it's always packed! What the hell did I just do. Sat at the bar, my chef was cool the food was great. Service was confused as hell, hostess seating people all out of order people getting pissed that they got skipped over, my server seemed confused by the order I gave her...I ordered a spicy tuna roll and a yellowtail roll with a beer. Here's the kicker, sat for about 10 mins trying to get somebody's attention to get the bill. It wasn't until I stood up to leave and my chef realized I never paid that he asked if nobody gave me a check to which he summed my server who arrived another 5 mins later. Pretty good sushi. I haven't been in this area since the bakery/furniture store next door shut it's doors to slow business. The main chef actually studied Omakase (chef's choice) while in chef school. These sushi chef's recognize good fish, as they were even explaining to us the quality and where they source their Uni (sea urchin) locally and their Pacific oysters from Washington state. The servings sizes are perfect and often too much, unless you are a glutten. The bar seating seemed more convenient as you can also chit chat with the chefs. I believe Anaba is either one of the most, if not The Most over hyped sushi place in Ventura County. I am very picky when it comes to customer service, especially at a sushi restaurant. I feel in a sushi environment, you need to be acknowledged and taken care of. I'm not much about decor like the majority of people when they enter a sushi joint. they expect it to look a certain way, its about the service and especially the food. I have only been to Anaba twice and both times I have walked out. The place is very cluttered, the seating arrangements is terrible. The staff is, I don't even know what to make of the staff, they seem to piss me off each time I have went. Now I cannot judge this place off of their sushi because I have never tried it. So this review is geared towards their service. The first time I went, was for a dinner party. The waiting sucks. You have to stand somewhere outside. the place is so small and narrow that it makes the seating arrangment horrible. I felt very cramped when they sat us. After being seated, They were quick to take our drink orders, I felt rushed in doing so. I Also felt like they weren't comprehending when i would ask questions. Caught myself constantly having to repeat myself to the waitress. Long story short, after placing our orders, and these are our first "appetizer orders" 30-40 minutes have passed by with nothing to be delivered. Nothing except for the water I ordered. You can call me impatient but after 30 minutes with not one sushi roll, uni shot or anything?? Thats just a joke, I walked out and went to another restaurant. Second time I went to Anaba was again, due to a party. I told myself the first time I would never come back but since it was a family party, thought I give it a second try. So again, just like my first experience, we get seated. Still very cluttered and considering the place is so narrow you can hear everyone. I feel people have to speak at a louder tone(very loud inside) Anyways, I had just finished working out prior to coming and I was hungry. I did not want to wait for the waitress to take everyones order. So as she was taking drink orders, I told her I wanted to send in a small order to hold me off and i would again order later with the rest of the party. She told me no, that I had to wait because it would be easier for her to take down the orders all at once. Now that kind of irritated me and threw me off guard because Its pretty much rejecting an appetizer order. So again, I questioned her and repeated what she just told me because from my first experience, they seemed not to comprehend at times. So I said "you cannot take my order because its easer for you to take all of ours at once" she nodded and after that nod, I got up and left. This place is horrible at service, If I did wait to order with everyone else for the waitress conveinance, I probably would have waited an hour until I was fully served, considering it takes 20 minutes to order and an additional 35 to receive your sushi. Bad experiences both times i been there. Walked out twice. Customer service and satisfaction apparently doesn't mean anything to them. read more

I've tried many places in Ventura county many times and Anaba consistently has the freshest and best tasting sushi in the area. All the basics are very solid and the special sashimis are great.
