AVOID this place. Usually, I try to support local businesses but today they tried to charge me $22 for one quart of 5W-30 motor oil (not synthetic). That's price gouging! When I questioned the woman behind the counter, she was insistent, but relented when I took back my $20 bill and told her I was in the week before and bought the same oil for $12 (that is double the price of what Home Depot charges: $5.99). She also looked it up on the Emporium True Value Hardware website (the other hardware store in town, minutes away on Main Street) and said it was $9.99 there. So I agreed to pay $12 + tax again . If I didn't say anything, they would've charged $22 plus tax. I think they just make up prices when you get to the counter (no price on item). The New York State Attorney General should look into their price gouging. read more

I've been thinking about whether to share this story, but after what happened, I feel people should know. What should have been a simple stop to buy two umbrellas in Sag Harbor turned into one of the most unbelievable customer experiences I've ever had. We pulled into Amy's Hardware & Music because it had started raining. We went inside, bought two umbrellas, made sure we weren't parked in any employee spaces, then walked next door to grab two burgers to go. We were gone for roughly 15-20 minutes. When we came back, our car had a boot on it. At first, I honestly thought it was some kind of mistake. It wasn't. To make matters worse, it was pouring rain and we had an infant with us. Instead of getting everyone back into the car and heading on with our day, we found ourselves standing in the rain with a baby, trying to figure out how a customer who had just spent money in the store ended up locked out of their own vehicle. We showed our receipt. We explained exactly what happened. None of it mattered. The only option we were given was to pay $250. When we couldn't believe what we were hearing, the police were called. The officers listened to both sides and told us they understood why we were frustrated. They also explained that, because it was private property, there was nothing they could do. One comment from an officer stuck with me. He said this wasn't the first time he had been called to this business over a situation like this. According to him, they respond to incidents there on a regular basis. Eventually, we paid the $250 because we had no other practical choice. Then we did something that felt right. We walked back into the store and returned the umbrellas. Not because we needed the money. Because I couldn't justify giving my business to a company after the way we had been treated. I've been a customer at thousands of businesses over the years. I've had great experiences, average experiences, and disappointing ones. But I've never had my car booted after making a purchase and stepping next door for a few minutes. Every business has the right to protect its parking lot. Customers also have the right to decide where they spend their money. For me, that's an easy decision. I won't be going back. If you visit Amy's Hardware & Music in Sag Harbor, pay very close attention to the parking policy. I certainly wish we had known exactly how aggressively it would be enforced. read more

Amy is THE BEST! Came in with a problem and she went out of her way to help us! Such a great store and an amazing selection!!!

My husband dragged me in here and I was so glad he did! First of all, unlike most hardware stores, aside from all the usual stuff there are cool random things like strands of beads made from old tape cassettes (they look like shells!), little disco balls to hang wherever, and Ouja Boards. There's even a room in the back where the cool owner Amy sells guitars and other stringed instruments (she plays guitar herself!). Needless to say, I can't wait to go back (never thought I'd say that haha). read more
