The Sunset Limited stops in El Paso
    Joe J.

We recently took the Sunset Limited from Maricopa to New Orleans. We really enjoyed the sense of real travel that you don't get in an airliner and the relaxation you don't get when you drive a great distance. First, a bit about Amtrak. Private companies bailed out of the passenger rail business for good in 1971 and Amtrak was formed as a government owned corporation. Passenger rail traffic had been declining since the 1920's with the widespread use of the car and later, airliners. Private companies were losing money and decided to focus on freight. Amtrak has never broke even and has never been well capitalized. Even so Amtrak has managed to increase ridership consistently now to 30 million passengers a year and has improved on-time performance. I, for one, am glad that there is a nation rail alternative. I am old enough to have travelled on some of the passenger trains run by Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, and Penn Central. They had considerably better service and amenities, so I do wish some of that could be incorporated into Amtrak. We boarded one of the superliner sleeping cars (vintage 1980/90's) and went to our bedroom. This is our favorite accommodation on Amtrak, it has two fold down beds, sink, shower, and toilet in the cabin. During the day, there is a wide couch and a reading chair. The rocking of the car makes sleeping easy. Included in the fare are all meals. In this case, out trip was about 30 hours long, so we ate 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and 1 dinner. Dining for sleeper passengers is in the dining car. In the pre-Amtrak days, there was an extensive cook to order menu. With Amtrak, it has been pared way down to about 6 items on each menu. The dining room is on the upper level of the car and the kitchen is in the lower level. Government run quirkiness begins in the dining car. Each passenger fills out the bottom of an imposing multipart form, which has all combinations and permutations of BLD. The waiter then fills out the boxes as you order. If there is any mistake or changes, an entirely new form must be filled out. The food is not bad. It is above school lunch and below Denny's. Service can vary from grumpy to very attentive. The coach passengers eat at the snack bar in the lounge car. As befits a fully vested government worker, Vinny (the snack bar guy), would announce over the PA at 12:30 that "he was about to take his meal break and would be back in an hour to reopen". Sure enough, Vinnie enters the dining car and sits down to take his meal right during lunch primetime for the coach passengers. Much of the first day is traveling through Texas. At 8a, we arrive in El Paso. At 9p we arrive in San Antonio for a 3 hour layover. We were able to take a taxi to the Riverwalk (1 mi. away) and walk most of it. Our cabin steward was a likable fellow, but no amount of cajoling could get him to actually service our bedroom in a timely manner. He had to spend too much time in the dining car or chatting. Kindly reminders were listened to and promptly forgotten. The next day, we were in Louisiana most of the day. It was incredibly picturesque to travel through cajun country, sugar cane fields, and rice paddies. Our train arrived in New Orleans 1 hour ahead of schedule! All in all it was a good trip. Much better than on an airliner (if you have the time). The employees range from very service oriented to plodding and self-absorbed. The government run nature of the train was evident, but some employees would not let the system get them down and made great effort to serve.

If you ride the Valley Metro…read moreto the stop at 44th street and Washington, you can exit and take the escalators to the Sky Harbor Sky Train which will take you to the terminals. I only live a couple of miles from a Valley Metro light rail stop, so I can lift or uber over for cheap if I need to use this system last minute. Usually when I am doing a 2-4 day trip, I park over at one of the airport shuttle locations outside of Sky Harbor airport and ride in. If I am going on a long trip overseas, I will ask someone to drop me off and pick me up. This light rail option is my last resort option if no one is available or if I just don't feel like paying to park at the airport. The nice thing about the Valley Metro/Sky Train is that it is cheap. It is only $2 to ride the light rail. Yes, you are dealing with the interesting characters that ride the light rail if you go this route. But it is a small price to pay to make a budget friendly trip. The bad thing about using this is that you cannot leave your car overnight at a Valley Metro park-n-ride. So leaving your car there and going away for a few days is not an option. Unless you want to come back and find out that your car was towed. The other thing is that it can take awhile to get to the airport on the light rail. So you have to plan ahead to make sure you arrive at your gate on time. Both the Valley Metro and Sky Train run 24/7. The Valley Metro runs less trains overnight.

For those of you that don't know, it's completely free unlike the NYC SkyTrain. And once you get to 44th Street Station and off airport property, you can get an Uber or a Lyft for like half the price. I always call it from the Crowne Plaza across the street so I have an A/C spot to sit if I need it to wait for my ride.

Since then, we have…read moreused the service to attend concerts, ball games, the Tempe Arts Festival, and more, until we tried to use it on the 4th of July last year. It was a disaster!! The light rail no longer took us to the regular venues we have visited but dumped us off .8 miles from Chase Field. We were then supposed to cross an intersection twice and wait for another train. We waited in the heat until we just decided to walk to Chase Field. By the time we arrived, we were hot, thirsty, and miserable, and a train never passed by us, so one never came. Finding the train to return home was equally a huge pain! So we hadn't used the light rail again until yesterday to get to Chase Field on the 4th of July. We thought Valley Metro might have fixed this transportation catastrophe. They did not. In fact, it was worse! Valley Metro claims we could "enjoy the 8-minute walk" to Chase Field. Once again, no second train came, so we walked .8 miles in the blazing heat for 20 minutes (I checked my GPS to get an accurate distance and time)!! When trying to return home, we had to walk back to Central and had no idea which train would take us back. Valley Metro has ruined what originally was a good transportation option to downtown, but no longer. If anyone is elderly, has a disability, health issues, or trouble walking, avoid this mess! If you drive, take an Uber or a taxi, or even ride a horse, you will be happier if you need to go to an event downtown. Valley Metro should be ashamed of what they have done to what used to be good transportation.

ASU actually recommended using public transit in order to keep traffic and parking issues to a minimum ... but we didn't see a big influx in folks on the Light Rail! Service was prompt and fast, and it was easy to get from Downtown Mesa to the Stadium in about 20 minutes. Thankfully, the AC was on full blast, which we were thankful for, and the car we rode in was relatively clean. Aside from the transit itself, I feel that the app/purchasing system could use some upgrades. Our party loaded up their app with $30 to purchase tickets for everyone in our group who was attending graduation, but came to find out as we were about to board the train that you can only use the app to purchase the account holder's ticket. There are also no refunds once that money is in the app, which was upsetting to learn for the purchasers who live out of state. We stood in line at the stop to buy tickets the old-fashioned way, and it all worked out that night ... however I don't think it makes much sense that you cannot purchase tickets for others in the app, and wanted to voice those thoughts here in the hopes that changes can be made to better serve Light Rail riders.

It's fun when you get on a train with lots of local fans that are excited for a big game. But as with most transportation systems, you get some characters that like to jump on for a free ride. I've definitely have had some interesting people watching moments over the years. Valley Metro Rail has 38 stops/'stations between Gilbert and Phoenix. I usually park at the Apache and 101 location because there is a large park-and-ride parking lot there. The light rail does have a stop at the airport that connects with Sky Harbor's Sky Train. But it sucks that you can't leave your car at a park-and-ride overnight. Because the light rail runs along the street and not above ground, many cars have run into trains over the years. As of 2023, Valley Metro charges $2 for one ride and $4 for an all-day pass. Security does occasional check for tickets. Valley Metro Rail has several extensions being planned and currently under construction to reach other parts of the Valley.

Honestly, I had no ultimate destination and strictly wanted to sightsee. Having no idea what to expect, I chose the day pass at $4 and got on at this stop. Yes, they will check your ticket. Mine was scanned three times while I went to and from Phoenix. One girl gave an expired pass to the ticket gentleman (sorry I don't know his correct title) and all he said was "your ticket isn't valid, make sure you get a valid ticket". Well, that was nice. In the train in the trip into Phoenix, the windows were covered with some sort of dotted barrier, so we couldn't really see out. In the cart back into Tempe, we could see out with no problem, even when it started getting dark. I guess we lucked out. We met this super cool dude that showed us his video collection of train characters that he's encountered, including the window licker. Footage of a guy literally making out with his reflection. You can't make this stuff up. When we got to the end of the route the announcement indicated that it was time to exit, but we were in for the long haul and stayed on. So, don't pay attention to that announcement if you're site seeing too.
