Amtrak is a great, inexpensive way to get from Philadelphia to Lancaster that takes a lot less time than driving. Two lines provide access to the city: the Keystone line, with frequent trains connecting Harrisburg with New York City, and the Pennsylvanian, a daily train running between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The beautiful and historic station is located in the northern part of the city and is a quick cab ride away from the center of this small but surprisingly vibrant city. If you haven't checked out downtown Lancaster City, you really ought to give it a look, and taking Amtrak to get there is a great choice!

Old historic building. I'm impress about the cleanliness of this station. The restroom is also well maintained. It's a small facility. I didn't had any interaction with their staff because I purchased my ticket online. But one of them said hi to me and smiled at me. So that was nice.

The Lancaster train station is in need of serious upgrades and shows it. However, they are pretty efficient all the times Ive been there. Amtrak itself is pretty good as well. On time and a nice ride. On the downside, security is a little weak. Im ok with it the way it is, but some people are kind of skittish about it.

It has not upgraded since I was 9 and I'm 37. At least they have an elevator. It's enough to get to point A to B

Why can't you be cheaper? I've always had a good experience on amtrack. It's clean, quiet, well monitored and often on time.

    Ask the Community - Amtrak

Is it easy to get a taxi at the Lancaster Amtrak station?

Yes, very easy, but you'll probably have to call the dispatch, I've not seen too many just hanging around. Lyft and Uber are plentiful and always in the area as well.

We took a lovely train ride in a historic railcar from New Freedom to Glen Rock which is about a half hour. The conductor pointed out notable sites along the way. We then enjoyed a fabulous high tea at Table 1837 Glen Rock Mill Inn. There was so much to eat that we left with a doggie bag. There were only 3 choices of tea but the salted caramel was delicious. They had 4 finger sandwiches, 2 scones and fruit. We also received a grilled chicken salad as an entree accompanied by a glass of wine (there were 3 choices of wine. Originally we were offered mimosa but then they ran out of orange juice). For dessert, we had Pots du Crème. We boarded the train and headed back to New Freedom. I'd definitely recommend and intend on doing another event in the future.

Plenty of free parking right outside the gift shop/museum (handicapped parking, too). We browsed the gift shop first--lots of train-lover trinkets, and of course, Adventure Buddy snagged a couple of those irresistible 3D wooden train models. I was over the moon when check-in handed us oversized souvenir tickets--complete with our traincar and seats punched out. Such a fun keepsake! The small museum next door took maybe 15 minutes but was nicely done and staffed by a friendly volunteer. After a quick pit stop, we boarded the D. Reed Anderson car. The open windows made for a breezy ride past pretty scenery--green trees, a creek, even small towns like Glen Rock where folks waved from porches. Actors in full Civil War character moved through the cars during the ride, building the story of Union vs. Confederate soldiers battling over rumored gold. At times it was hard to hear or follow the storyline depending on where you sat, but the big skirmish at the park--cannon blasts, musket fire, and all--was definitely the highlight. Tickets were $31.99 and worth it for a few hours of history-meets-theater-meets-train ride fun. This is a great daytrip for adults (grab lunch before and ice cream after nearby). Kids would love the trains, but younger ones may struggle with the length of this particular event. We'll definitely be back in the fall for one of their seasonal rides!

If you are in the immediate area (under 30 mins drive) then go for it but if you are further away I would not recommend traveling more than 20-30 mins for this experience. The train ride was cool but when you get to the end for the 20 min break there really isn't anything to do. They have one train station house that you can walk into but there's nothing fancy in the house. The souvenir shop was closed so that was useless during my excursion. The leaves were not orange so there wasn't a "fall experience" which isn't the fault of the train service. Overall the experience is cool but nothing grand and certainly not something you should go out of your way for. Maybe the other activities this business offers is better (i.e. pumpkin express ride) but I won't be back to find out.

An update to my initial review:…read more I'm a fan of Amtrak, reliant on their service since I regularly travel between Philadelphia and NYC. The train takes less time than driving and saves us a fair amount of money. (Are you familiar with the price of parking in Manhattan?!) I generally pay the extra $3 to modify my ticket without penalty. Life happens and we've had to make changes more than once. Two weeks ago I realized something astonishing. With a major snowstorm hitting the northeast, I decided last minute to change my ticket from Tuesday to Sunday. I wanted to get back to PA. Posted fares were insane, literally priced more than an airline ticket. I was resigned to staying put in NY. For the fun of it, I checked several times and then .....voila! A fare posted at $219 an hour before, had dropped to $24! Four seats were available. I grabbed one. So my message is twofold: pay the extra couple of dollars for flexibility, AND if you're deterred by expensive tickets on a particular day, keep checking. It can change on a dime!
