I travel quite a bit but not usually by train. I decided I was long overdue for a long distance…read moretrain ride. This is my return trip to Atlanta from Wilmington DE. I have passed through this station many times but never boarded here until this day. I had a few bags and luggage. The station is not small but ut definitely does not compare to the size of 30th Street Station in Philadelphia. There are several entrances around the perimeter of the station. Luckily I found one that has a ramp as many of the doors have a set of steps to go up and down. The station is very bright with a lot of light coming from an atrium ceiling. There are several staircases and escalators that lead upstairs to the tracks. Announcements are made frequently and loudly. I requested the help of a Red Cap. He was very accommodating to me as I also had a handicap ticket. He took my luggage to the baggage counter and had them checked. The attendant also assisted me when it was time to the tracks via the elevator and directly to my train car. I would gladly use this location any time again in the future.

This station has been renamed to honor former President Joe Biden. Our train departure time was changed only to revert to the original departing time. An announcement was made to make way to the track which was done in a mad rush manner. SMH moment. The train left on time and I was glad to be on my way. Nothing to do with the station, but the train heading to NYC was freezing, loud and uncomfortable. We grabbed seats near the restroom, which unfortunately, had a strong, disgusting floral odor emanating every time the door was left open. A bit of a nightmare. The Cafe club car serving snacks/drinks was a joke. I had to wait so long just to purchase 2 bottles of water with no other customers there! Opposite experience from my morning departure from the Moynihan Train Hall.

First the technical info:…read more - This is in Zone 3, for fare calculation purposes. - It connects to bus route # 117. - It is currently the last stop on the "Media/Elwyn Line" (formerly known as the R3, prior to 2010). - Station is located directly across the street from the Elwyn Institute campus. - This station is in a wooded, mostly-residential setting. There is a gas station about 0.3mi up the road (much easier to walk there on the Elwyn Ave side). You WILL NEED transportation from this station when you arrive, so plan that in advance. It is very dark outside the station at night. - This line connects at 30th Street Station, to access Amtrak, and other regional rail lines. It also stops at other center city stations, to connect with regional rail and subway lines. This line does not go directly to the airport. You are better off getting a taxi or private car for the time it would take to make connections for the airport. - If you ride this into town and miss your stop, you will be headed to Trenton, which is the northeast-bound line for this same train. History: This line used to take commuters all the way to West Chester, PA, until 1986. Stops at Williamson Trade School, Glen Riddle, and other local hubs, lost access, and these passengers flooded the Elwyn Station. Thus, it is a very over-crowded stop. Parking has been a problem for years. New lots were built a few years ago, but the station remains crowded and full. Future: This line is planning to reach Wawa, PA by 2020. They have been asked to restore service to West Chester, PA, however no plans are currently in the works.

Philadelphia is the place to be during our country's 250th anniversary and any other time of the year! History is everywhere in Philadelphia and it's a beautiful place and beautiful people who truly welcome EVERYONE! And AMTRAK is just about the best way to get to Philadelphia! A piece of trivia, I used to work with the namesake of this station, and he probably used this station more than just about any other Philadelphian, to get back and forth to Washington, DC. It couldn't be easier to get from Philadelphia to Dc or New York or Boston than to hop on a train and let someone else do the driving!

An update to my initial review:…read more I'm a fan of Amtrak, reliant on their service since I regularly travel between Philadelphia and NYC. The train takes less time than driving and saves us a fair amount of money. (Are you familiar with the price of parking in Manhattan?!) I generally pay the extra $3 to modify my ticket without penalty. Life happens and we've had to make changes more than once. Two weeks ago I realized something astonishing. With a major snowstorm hitting the northeast, I decided last minute to change my ticket from Tuesday to Sunday. I wanted to get back to PA. Posted fares were insane, literally priced more than an airline ticket. I was resigned to staying put in NY. For the fun of it, I checked several times and then .....voila! A fare posted at $219 an hour before, had dropped to $24! Four seats were available. I grabbed one. So my message is twofold: pay the extra couple of dollars for flexibility, AND if you're deterred by expensive tickets on a particular day, keep checking. It can change on a dime!
