This Amtrak Station is located in a beautiful historic building that you almost overlook as you try to get in and out of the limited parking lot, dropping off and picking up people. I must say, too, that at times I prefer purchasing train tickets here instead of online because the staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the train schedules. Passing through Harrisburg via Amtrak. Station is quaint, yet in need of an update. The area surrounding the train station is pretty desolate -- no real food | drink options available within walking distance or WITHIN the station itself. Travel options are few and far between at best. Last train on Saturdays are at 7:05 pm. No outlets to plug and charge your phone, yet they have a box with chargers for $8 to rent. This station is also connected to the Greyhound Bus Terminal (in the back), yet the seating area is closed at 10 pm leaving waiting passengers sitting outside in the wee hours of the morning awaiting the Flix|Fullington|Greyhound buses. Amtrak really needs to update this station. read more

First time taking a train to NYC on business. The train station is extremely clean and the digital signage showing the trains and track locations are perfect. The Amtrak Police are very helpful if you have a question and met one of the track engineers who was also very friendly and helpful. This will be about a three hour ride to NYC. Keystone Train. Rates are really good if you ever decide to travel by train. Parking is not the greatest, found a lot in the other side of these buildings, open air lot and this is not affiliated with Amtrak. read more

Cross country trip taken. Family car was dirty. Door lock was broken. Numerous employees had quit in both the sleeper car and dining car.

It just can't be beat for the price and I feel like I was deprived having grown up in a town with no regular train service (talking to you, dumpy Scranton). What a pleasure to not have to drive or worry about what time you're going to arrive. It's all run on time and with no hassles. I enjoy taking the train to Philly to the airport or just for pleasure. It's also super easy to continue on to New York City and again, no problems with driving or parking, and those ridiculous tolls at the bridges and tunnels! This place is just sketchy... As a young, blind woman, traveling alone, not having any security measures, and very limited lighting, is a major turn off. There is limited staff to help me navigate, and basically no signage for boarding processes. That station is in desperate need of an update and some food/drink options. not everyone is able to bring things with them. Definitely have some safety concerns and don't recommend traveling alone from that station. read more

No one wants to wait five hours in a place where there are homeless people and dirty dusty train station and being charged full price as if no inconvenience will occured. This train station felt like you just got off in the 1800s. When I first got off, I didn't see the elevator, only the stairs, so I dragged my mom's heavy luggage up the flight of stairs. It was only when we got to the top of the stairs, I saw the elevator on the other side. Sigh. Since there were only a few platforms, it's really to get lost here. Besides a weird odor and some parts of the train station, this station is quaint and sufficient. So how about the ride to and from New York City and Harrisburg? - A very bumpy commute. How do I know? My boyfriend who rides the Empire route on Amtrak often noticed that this was significantly bumpier. - No snack car in the Keystone route. Prepare to pack food or opt for the Pennsylvanian route. - WiFi is non-existent. I had trouble logging in and in the end, leeched off my boyfriend's hotspot. - The newer trains look and feel comfier, but the older trains have more legroom. - Interesting to note- Whichever way you are facing on the train will become reversed when the train pulls into the Philadelphia station. When leaving the Philly station, they will back out via reverse and then continue on through the rest of the ride. read more

For some reason, Delta doesn't sell tickets from Harrisburg to New York/JFK and I didn't relish the 4 hour drive through New York City so I researched the train and found that it would work for my needs. Pros $59 instead of a $400 airfare Much more room and comfort with a better seat pitch and better recline No weight limit for luggage Wifi, most of the way At some points, we hit over 110 mph Cons In many areas, the ride was bumpy as hell. Stomach shaking bumps that made me feel ill. The train was 20 minutes late into New York Penn At Philadelphia, we picked up a full load for the rest of the run. The guy who took the seat next to me had just smoked at least a pack of cigarettes. Yuck. I'd do it again. read more

We took Amtrak from Harrisburg, PA to NYC, Penn Station. What a fabulous way to travel!

The schedule going east or west is not convenient for anyone working or needing secure connections from Pittsburgh or Philadelphia. There is only one train in either direction in the morning, meaning unless you can get on board at 5 AM going east, and have several hours to spend on a slow train, this is just not a reasonable alternative to driving nor flying. However, if you enjoy train rides, and have no place else you'd rather be, you will enjoy the mostly bucolic and Allegheny Mountains scenery in either direction. This is not the Amtrak Northeast Corridor passengers are accustomed to. There is no Metroliner, nor double decker cars. This is more the old Pennsylvania Railroad taking its own sweet time to get you where they want you to go on mostly old cars from another historic age. The Harrisburg Transportation Center (Station) which Amtrak owns and leases to the municipal operating authority is a lovely throwback station worth a few minutes of your tourist time. It has its own Yelp page and a 5 Star rating from me. read more

I love Amtrak for going to and from Harrisburg to Philadephia or NYC. Its really easy to book, change times if you need to, and navigate. I have a friend who comes from CT and we meet in either city and its easy to coordinate trains that arrive and depart close to the same time. On the train the seats are comfortable and there are outlets available to plug your phone in. Wifi is available on most trains but I am not sure if its on all trains. The signal is hit or miss, I usually just stick with my LTE but its good to know its there if needed. Some of the trains have food cars but I haven't figured out which ones do because its never every one I'm on and I usually only go to one of two destinations. I've also never been to them but again, good to know if you have one in a pinch. The restrooms on the train are easily accessed and usually clean unless you're on a crowded train coming BACK from NYC. Then ick. I've only had to use one once and I am okay if I never need one again. Glad its there if I need it. Anyway convenient method to travel across the state to where you need to go. Takes away the hassle of driving and gives you some time to relax and see the countryside. read more

The worst I love taking Amtrak, usually. The ride to Harrisburg is ridiculous. There was drunk woman singing and cursing loudly, the conductors walked by and giggled but did nothing to make the situation better for other riders. The WiFi wasn't working do I couldn't drown out her profanity with videos, etc. disappointed. read more

The station is really nice on the outside, they have a good taxi service here, greyhound served downstairs and the trains schedule displayed on monitors. I thought the station was gonna be shady as flip, but I was amazed how getting on/off the trains was easy. Their shop in the lobby has great gifts for tourists & travelers alike, which is where I got some Norfolk Southern stuff from. Overall, awesome station with a rather unique history. If you're planning to take a train to Harrisburg, take some time to let the size of this station and shear architectural integrity fill you with DETERMINATION. read more

I've ridden Amtrak's Pennsylvanian Service train many times for business and travel. Still, I can't give this train anything higher than a two-star rating. Believe me, the low rating has nothing to do with the crews, cleanliness, equipment, comfort, scenery, or punctuality. Nope, the low rating is because the schedule sucks! It sucks for business travelers and it sucks for lesiure travelers. Just see my previous reviews for reasons why! I miss having that second train a day which left Harrisburg later (thus allowing a full business day) and had a real dining car with real sit down meals! I thought I would explore the possibility of not having to again drive the monotonous, mind-numbing and increasing expensive Pennsylvania Turnpike from Pittsburgh to Harrisburg for work. Enter Amtrak Pennsylvanian service. I had read so-so reviews on various travel sites about the lack of service and connection in Harrisburg and approached my adventure with some trepidation. Price Go Business Class. It is not that expensive and still much cheaper than driving. business Class give you free beverages, wide seats, electrical outlets to plus in your electronics and ample space to work. It is quiet and clean and the people are friends. There are some regulars and retirees. The coach is separate from coach and not full. [Coach ~$50 each way; Business Class ~ $68 each way; Turnpike Tolls ~ $25 each way + gas + vehicle and human body wear and tear] Space Lots of it (in Business Class - coach pretty crowded). I gained back 8 hrs (4+4) of my life and arrived relaxed! Internet connectivity is free but sometimes cuts out because Amtrak has to rely on cell towers for connection. Just plan to work offline intermittently. Schedule This is limited, but it is what it is. Pittsburgh departure is 7:30AM from the downtown Amtrak station. Easy to get to, Arrive in Harrisburg at 1PM. Return departure is 2:40PM and get back to Pittsburgh at 8:00PM. Not good for a single day trip but if you have overnights, it works. Connections I was fearful about this; however, I hooked up with Enterprise car rental (601 Cameron St. - about 6 blocks away). Was met by their representative who took my right to the rental place and on returning returned me promptly to the station. Very very easy - better, simpler and less stressful than any airport car rental experience. If you need to go only to Harrisburg City, there are also lots of cabs. Conclusion The Pennsylvanian is no Orient Express, but it is a very viable (depending on your schedule), affordable and productive alternative for business travelers between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg. This train station is a quaint throw back to the days of old. The only thing modern about this station is the ticket kiosks and the "Transit Deli". They do have a phone charging station, which most would imagine is a large free standing box with phone chargers draping out of it... Nope. They keep it old school with a nailed down power strip on the vintage bench style seating area. Hey, its better than nothing! The TRANSIT DELI is great! The sandwiches are all pre-made and better than most delis in New York! Always fresh and never soggy or stale (the mayo is served on the side! Hallelujah!). There is a huge selection of snacks, beverages, and travel items (including games, reading materials, toiletries, etc). I've never actually purchased a ticket at the station as my boyfriend always does this on his phone before we even arrive. The parking lot leaves much to be desired. During peak hours it can become a real mess. There aren't many places to park and navigating those who are double parked can be a real fiasco. If you have a couple extra minutes be sure to check out the working train model on display! read more

I used Amtrak to travel from Pittsburgh to Harrisburg, PA on January 24 just after a 30"+ snow storm that hit Harrisburg and returned to Pittsburgh on January 29. The Amtrak station is a fall-back to the old fashioned stations built during the era of steam locomotives. There are individual entries to 4 track platforms and the waiting area has old, but well maintained wood benches. As an older person the gate for my train has a new, self operated elevator. Inside the station I handed off my luggage to an Amtrak employee who was most helpful. He guided me out to the bench close to my departure gate. He told me my luggage would arrive at the gate just prior to the arrival of my train to Pittsburgh. When the train pulled in the baggage cart and a small group of passengers were helped into the elevator. At the train platform the Amtrak gentleman not only put my luggage onto the train but he found an available location that I could access easily during the trip to Pittsburgh. read more

This review is strictly for the service available from Harrisburg to NYC. There are not enough times in the day for travels to leave Harrisburg at a decent time. The earliest is 5:00am, and then doesn't leave again until 8 something in the morning. Prices are drastically different depending on the time of day you choose to leave -unfair. The closer to your travel date, the higher the price so purchase early! Never had problems with tickets on board or printing at the station. read more

Old school train station. There's three ticket windows - only one will be open (no central heat and probably no air conditioning). There is a suspect ATM that can be rolled away, but is available if you are desperate. They do not make an overhead announcement on the PA when trains are boarding so just follow the crowd when ppl start to walk toward a train, make sure you ask someone if it's the right train because there's no way to know for sure. It's not crowded....considering its Harrisburg and no more than one train leaves in an hour. No one will help you with your luggage down the stairs to the actual train so if you can't lift it don't bring it smh. I am sure they have a passenger elevator for disabled and handicapped individuals to stay compliant with ADA regulations, though it wasn't apparent. Once I returned to the station after my trip one of the employees let me and a few others to a freight service elevator in the office portion of the station, I hope this isn't the only elevator they have. Lastly, there's not "Amtrak" parking lot or garage. Sigh, there is a private garage nearby (Chestnut Street parking garage) but it's a ridiculous $25 a day.
