This is the newest Amphora Nueva location in the *NEW* Castro Valley Marketplace with others in Berkeley, Lafayette, and San Anselmo. Place offers wonderful olive oils, herbed-infused oils, vinegars, flavored and aged balsamic. I've been to the San Anselmo and Berkeley locations and staff are very knowledgable and great at answering any questions The Castro Valley location is a smaller version of their other stores but with plenty to choose from. Staff friendly and will assist you with olive oils and vinegars combinations: which would be great to make a delicious dressing or ones used for dipping and/or cooking. I've used their aged balsamic to make a reduction for drizzling over fresh strawberries and ice cream and over goat-cheese stuffed figs wrapped in bacon. Simple and delicious! Located when you first enter the Castro Valley Marketplace and conveniently located next to Seven Hills Baking Company...get their epi for dipping! Plenty of street parking available.

I started visiting when I started the…read morePaleo diet due to some autoimmune health issues, and found that normal grocery stores were frustrating as nearly 90% of the store were items full of preservatives, sugar, dairy, and other additives that are just not conducive to the Paleo diet. It was frustrating to say the least, so when I found this place, I started visiting regularly. It gave me some semblance of normalcy to not have to put back nearly all items I pick up. While it is pricier, I primarily buy my main produce elsewhere and supplement with paleo sauces, snacks and other items here. They also have a great supplement section, where I purchase a few supplement to help lesser the symptoms of my autoimmune disease. I had a more pleasant than usual experience today and wanted to highlight it. I visited on a Tuesday morning around 11AM and parking was plenty. I'm happy I can always find shaded parking. I walked in and grabbed a basket and it seems this place is always well staffed, which keeps the produce well stocks and it seems it's rotated regularly to make sure the items are fresh. This place is always clean and tidy, making it easy to remember the layout and navigate it. I had a question about their water machine and how they would charge for a half gallon(I didn't have a full gallon bottle), and she said they just weighed it! So I went to the cashier and ask if she needed to weigh my bottle before I filled it(just like how they would for bulk items) and she said since there is 64 FL Oz. Ingrained into the glass it was fine! It was a pleasant experience, as they were happy to answer my questions and helped me ensure I got what I needed. They also had free range eggs for $5/dozen, which was a pleasant surprise. Though at 11AM they only have one carton left. I did not buy it since I bought some eggs from TJs already. I also picked up some frozen squash and organic opal apples that were on sale. The prices weren't any worse than a usual grocery store. Just make sure you price match, like for example, chomp beef sticks are $1.99 at TJs, $2.69 here, but they were on sale for $1.69. So, you could do a bit of savings!(Since chomps turkey sticks are one of the only paleo sticks that I can throw in my purse in case I get hungry). Overall, I do enjoy this place. I think mire bulk items would be great as it is quite small today. I also could not find any lemon balm tea, so I'll have to buy that elsewhere. I'll be coming back every week to scour your sales and supplement my grocery shopping!

You can also pick and choose and they provide you a little baggie to put them all in. They also sell turkish delight which he cuts for you by hand. I really enjoyed the pomegranate one as a nut-allergy girlie. The rose water was a little too rose-y for me. Too floral, it tasted like the smell of a grandma with her potpourri. They also sell nuts and other goodies like Palestinian ceramics. I had to get myself a Falasteeni ceramic magnet. It was so beautiful, painted with olives all over. Zaytoun aesthetic! I feel like it's been a staple in downtown for many years, and give nostalgic memories for those that have lived in the area. Now with kiddos, we stopped by for a quick meal after a weekend event with a big group. We were able to grab seating right away and order at the register/grab our numbers. I miss a complimentary bread bar, and Rigatoni's has never failed with that :) Service is friendly and our meals came out accordingly. A few standout comforting dishes: the Rigatoni Bolognese, Broccoli & Chicken Rigatoni, Cheese Ravioli, House Made Lasagna, and the Fettuccine Alfredo to name a few. The lasagna comes with a rich meat sauce, but what I love about the rigatoni bolognese is that it comes in a cream sauce which is just so tasty. There's a little something for everyone on the menu here. They have a kiddo menu, sandos, salads and other starters, and combo meals for a smaller-sized entrée, a soda, and choice of starter soup or salad. They have soups and sauces to-go, and appears they do parties/catering. Rigatoni's will always have a special place in my heart ~ it's a pretty straight-forward establishment that does the trick. Simple and straightforward, "fast-food" Italian food (of their parent restaurant Strizzi's) with no complaints Their signature Rigatoni Bolognese with a splash of cream is delicious comfort food and hits the spot. My fave is their chicken parmigiana, salmon risotto, salads...and of course bread bar: sourdough, seeded, olive with option of balsamic/olive oil dip or butter. I've tried their minestrone and flavor wise delicious but this last visit the vegetables tasted frozen as it wasn't crisp or soft but bouncy in texture...noticeable with the carrots. If you're wanting to try the smoked pork chop, decent but 2 thin cuts and tastes like a breakfast ham. I'll definitely try the steak with mushrooms next time. Service friendly, efficient and welcoming. Food reasonably priced and delicious...if you have realistic expectations you'll enjoy the food and casual dining. Of course best to dine in (during non peak times) vs take out where sauce dries out or absorbed into the pasta. Place clean and organized. Plenty of lot parking during non peak times (lunch and weekends are chaos!) along with free street parking.

One of my other coworkers guiltily showed up in the kitchen with a 1/4 of a bagel saying she had already had one but that butter was so good she had to have another tiny bit. I remembered a place on Jackson Street that I had gone to 5 years ago that had a tremendous selection - looked it up on Yelp and it was no longer on Jackson, but was listed in Castro Valley. So we went thought we'd go by and give it a try. Great decision! The "new" store in Castro Valley is much brighter, cleaner, nicer than the old location. I think the old location had more stuff from Eastern Europe, but this new location seems to have a broader selection, with more stuff from Western Europe and the Middle East. The guy behind the counter was very friendly and helpful - always willing to answer questions and even give tips on how to use the products that they sell. And his recommendations have been great - we asked him about which tahini and zaatar to get (they have many different brands/types of each...) and the ones he recommended have been way tastier than any of the brands that you find in most markets. Especially good was his recommendation on lebnah - he said that the brands they carry are all good, but they have some that they package in-house that was special. I tried it - it was less expensive than the other brands, but was the very best lebnah that I have ever tasted! Richer, creamier, with just the right amount of tang. Wonderful stuff! Anyway, Crossroads is a nice, clean, well-lit place with a great selection of unique products, and friendly, knowledgeable sales staff. Well worth a trip!
