I had been searching high and low for a Dominican hair salon since I moved from Washington Heights to Queens about 8 years ago. I stopped searching when to my surprise I found a wonderful Asian hairdresser that was able to tame my head of crazy curls for 7 years. When she quit styling to learn English this past year I was left without a hairdresser. For a quick blowout I have a spot near my job, but what about when I'm home and in need of more serious work? My sister in law has a super cool short haircut that compliments her edgy style and I've been dying to take the leap but wouldn't trust anyone near my hair with a pair of scissors other than my Dominican peoples. After doing some Yelp searching, I found Amiris and am beyond happy with finally getting the haircut of my dreams! Every time I went with a picture to my former hair dresser I would get a close but no cigar. It was partially my fault because I feared going too short. Amiris and her daughter Yvette wanted to make sure I was ready for the drastic change and advised that sometimes shorter can mean more maintenance, but reassured me it would look great on my head shape. As the hair evolution took place I felt a freedom and immense joy come over me. It was as if God placed me in Amiris divine hands for a reason. As Amiris cut my hair she told me about the history of her salon and how her mission is to make everyone that enters feel at home. Dominican hair stylists always get those blowouts done right but I've been avoiding them mostly because of the rowdy and gossipy atmosphere and loud music. At Amiris hair salon you won't get any of that and I certainly felt at home. Me and my daughter visited Amiris for the first time and I feel in love. My 8 year old got a hair cut and I color my hair and also got a hair cut. We made an appointment for 3pm but I decided to call them to see if they could take us sooner. And they did! The Salon is super clean, the ladies are all very nice and welcoming. For me to write a review of a place the spot HAS to be either EXTREMELY great or EXTREMELY poor. I'm figuring from the 1 star you guys already know where this one is going... First off, the establishment is clean enough to eat off the floor from what I could tell. The representatives that I spoke with were VERY courteous and professional. The ambiance of the place was serene and inviting..again from what I could tell. So how and why in TF am I giving 1star you ask??? It's because I asked how much for a wash and blow out. One lady asked if I also wanted braids..I told her no..just the wash and dry. She said $60. $60?????? For a wash and dry? $60??????. Let me pause and flesh this out. First off, I'm a brotha. Secondly, I've been going to a Dominican spot in LI for the past 6 years. The lady I've been going to in LI for the past 6 years charges me $35 for a wash, blow out AND cornrows. $35 for ALL of that. I always give her $40. During the winter I just do a ponytail so she charges me $25 for the wash and blowout. Back to THIS spot. Was I expecting to pay $25 in the boros the way I pay $25 on the Isle? Noooooo. But $60????? For a wash and dry???? $60?????? Am I buggin? Is it ME in this case?? I HATE to pull the race card in most scenarios. I mean I truly hate to do it. Even though we're reminded on a daily basis just how alive and well racism is in this world, I still like to believe that as a species we're making improvements..so on the strength of that I hate to pull the race card. But I've narrowed SIXTY BILLS for a wash and dry down to one of two things..either that WAS a case of the "brothas discount"..and by discount in this case we all know I mean MARKUP. OR it's because during the rona everybody's a pirate. I was telling a homegirl about the situation later in the day. First words out her mouth were "they did that because you're Black!" Guess what folks..my homegirl is a LATINA!! And SHE said that before I even told her I thought it was the brother's discount. She beat me to it! So when I asked why $60 for a wash and dry she said it's because of how much hair. I made sure she knew I DID NOT want braids that day (yesterday 02.13.21)..just a wash and dry and she said yes..it's $60. I thanked them for their time and information, wished them to have a nice weekend and skibbidy bebopped outta that joint. I Yelped another spot in the area..less than a mile from there. I called and asked how much for a wash and dry. The lady told me $35/$40. So I trooped over there. Guess how much they hit me for folks?? $40!!!! AND they did dope work AND the place is nice! That's EASY math when it comes down to which spot I will NOT be going back to and which spot just made a REPEAT customer! Idk if this review even matters to the owners or not but if there's anything that can be a takeaway from this..green dollar bills should be the only color of concern when it comes to the business side of things. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, wants, likes, dislikes, etc but from a business standpoint cash rules everything around me. I have to reiterate this point..I cannot prove or even say I know FOR SURE this scenario was bases on race but I can say when you plug in all those other numbers that I put in this review (LI and the other shop less than a mile away) the thought that the color of my skin does cross my mind. This place is a full service salon on Astoria Boulevard. I was looking for a Dominican place to get my nails done as it was suggested that the Dominican ladies really do nails well. So I did a Yelp search and found this place not too far from my home. I'm happy I decided to give them a shot. I arrived about an hour before closing and I was immediately seated and got my nails and hair done. Everyone was very friendly and I'm very pleased with the results. My nails were done well. The ladies took their time to do a neat job. Care was taken to clip my cuticles. My hair which is naturally very kinky was also blown out well by Kelly. Honestly gave this salon sooooooooooo many opportunities. The ONLY good thing here is the stylist PAOLA everything else is trash. The owner Amiris is beyond rude and unprofessional. Countless appointments that I've made only to arrive and Paola isn't in that day. When I indicated that I made the appointment a week earlier she tells me - "Sorry, I guess the receptionist didn't know that she was on vacation. Come back Saturday!" Not to mention the HOURS that I've had to wait even when Paola is in despite the fact that I've come in at the scheduled time... Recently moved to Jackson Heights and needed a great Dominican hair salon for the long-term. Came across Amiris hair salon through a Google search as the Top 10 best hair salons in the area. I must say Google was not wrong for mentioning Amiris as the top 10 best hair salons in Jackson Heights. My hairdresser was Paula (Loved her). First off let me just say my experience here was better than I expected!!! I was looking for a new salon to go since my old salon was charging me an extra $15 for trimming my hair which came up to a total of $50 so I decided to try this place out after keeping my hair curly for 1 year. My stylist was Nana, she was sweet and very gentle with my hair and it came out straight, soft and silky!! She really did an outstanding job wayyy better than my old salon. She also trimmed my ends and I only paid $35 which is I think a perfect price and I tipped her for being so good with me. I'm black, not mixed with anything and I love my curls. I'm very picky when it comes to my hair because I don't want to end up with any heat damage to where my curls aren't curly anymore, but overall great place and I will definitely be coming back!! read more

I didn't get a single bad vibe from the moment I walked in to the moment that I left (like I normally do at other nail salons.) I see most have rated this place with 4-5 stars . I however I had to give it 1 star because 0 was not an option. Last year I took my mom there and she left delighted after her hair, nails and toes were done. I made her another appointment and unfortunately is the reason for my 1 star rating. My mother waited 4 hours! I asked my mom "why in God's name would you wait 4 hours to be attended to ? " She said , "because I kept thinking they would take me next." This review is long overdue. I've been a customer for 6+ years since I found Paola( Hair Dresser) there, she's fantastic with all types of hair especially short hair, which is very difficult to do. The best thing about this salon is that they are kind, respectful and prices are fair but most of all they also have their own nail salon, plus other beauty things they do, like eyebrows, waxing body and so much more. Been coming here for over 15 years and I must say that the mother/daughter owners only care about money they do not care about their customers, especially if you are a long time customer and especially if you're not hispanic. My hair was very long after I gave birth (up to my hips) and as soon as I came in one day to do my hair, the next day everything fell off and it is now shoulder length. Because I've been coming for so many years, I decided to brush it off and stay loyal to them, worst mistake ever. I remember times I would cry in the chair because of the toxic products they were putting in my hair and how much it was tearing through my scalp. On top of that they continued to raise their prices because of their greed. A lot of their sales are not recorded and I am sure over the years they have been pocketing the money they make and not claiming everything (that's why they only accept cash). Hair 5 Stars Nails 3.5 to 4 Stars Overall, I will still give them a full 5 stars just because I got exactly the cut and blow-dry I wanted. Amiris is a full service salon located on Astoria Boulevard between 98th and 97th street; it's your one stop for hair, nails, massages and waxing. It's spacious and I love the color walls on the salon side, bright and glamorous and neutral wall color on the hair salon side which was very relaxing. They go by the slogan 'Not Your Typical Dominican Salon' and they are correct, they are very modern and offer more in variety than any other Dominican Salon I've ever been too. I'm also happy they don't have those 1980's hair model portraits on their walls which you will see in your typical Dominican Salons. They're very much outdated and no one gets their hair that way anymore, which is one of the many reasons I loved Amiris besides their decor. I stumbled upon Amiris through their IG page. Their before and after hair pictures caught my eye. After struggling to find a good hair salon I gave them a try and loved it. It's a bit far for me but it was worth it. I told the owner Ivette about my distance in travel and she said she has clients that live far and close such as Florida and fly to see her for a cut. Now that's dedication, if someone travels over 3000 miles for her cuts you know it's worth the travel and she knows what she is doing. I showed her a picture of what I wanted as cut and blow dry and that's what she delivered. My hair is curly and she knew what to do to get exactly the results that I wanted. My hair looked gorgeous and I was birthday dinner ready, the cut looks great with it curly too. My mani and pedi we're done by manicurist Laura and she took her time and patience for my nails. My problem was that she did the opposite of what I wanted, I wanted square shape toes and she gave me round shape toes. I asked for stiletto shape mani and after I grew my nails for a month she kept filing my nails and making them wide and very square, I told her if she kept filing my nails like that they will break she just kept filing and doing the opposite of the Stiletto shape I asked that I just said leave it like that please (I wanted to still have some of the nail length that grew). Maybe next time I will bring a picture so we won't be lost in translation. She also forgot to put a hot towel for my pedicure, she used a dry towel. I was confused maybe this is how it is done here or maybe she forgot because she was having an off day and that's why she forgot my hot towel and gave me wrong shapes for both mani and pedi. Some usual tips if you come here: They do not take reservations so go with ample time and early. Sign in your name as soon as you get there. Both the Nail and Hair Salon have sign in sheets. I will be sure to come back here, I get my hair trimmed every 3 months and finally I found a place that delivers the cut I love. For the nails maybe I will try another manicurist. Like I've mentioned in many of my previous reviews, I worked in the service industry for many years and I know that you can't deliver the same service every day, you probably didn't sleep well, had a rough morning, etc. so I can't say it was an overall bad experience. Amiris is amazing and so is her entire staff. Ivette (the owner's daughter) is my hair stylist. All stylists are equally good but Ivette is the expert in hair color. I hold an extra bond with her, she's really easy to talk to and she gets my vision. They recently opened a huge 'connected' nails/spa salon next door. The cleanness and professionalism is like no other salon that i'd visit. They are a busy salon so early Saturday mornings work best for me. Highly recommend this salon!! read more

I went for a haircut and blowout about 3 saturdays ago. I gotta say i will be a client for life. First of all the first thing you get, is a warm greeting when you walk in , which is what most places lack (Ive walked into salons where ill be there 20 mins plus and noone says a word to me). I didnt wait too long although it was full. Not only did Ivette cut and style my hair perfectly, Shes sweet and looks like she loves what she does (another plus). Every year for the about the past 6 years, I've brought my daughter here to have her hair and nails done for her school's Moving Up Ceremony. Every year, the total has come to about $35. When I took her earlier this year, well, the lady at the register asked the stylist what work was done, the stylist replied en Espanol and my total for getting my daughter's hair done was $15 more than usual. According to the price list on the wall (I wish I'd taken a pic to post along with this review. Dang!), my total should have been the same as it's been cos the prices are the same as they've been. Inflation, I know. But inflation is only about 3.22% a year. It's for dang sure not gonna add $15 to $35 in the span of a year, lol! The hairstyle was no more extravagant than any style she's gotten in previous years. Anywho, I gave paid the $50 and bounced. That extra $15 was going to be the stylist's tip but I think she gave it to herself by adding it to the total, so... Amiris' nail salon is nice. Never too busy and they do decent work. Aside from that, no complaints. The hair and nail salons are clean, and the stylists are efficient. I also love that when we've gone (Friday mornings), no appointment was necessary and the wait was never more than ten minutes or so. read more

My regular stylist was sick so I went on yelp and decided to try this place because of the reviews. I traveled over an hour to get here and Im pissed tf off! I arrived and wasnt greeted. They looked annoyed. I should have left after that but instead I asked one of the ladies to blow dry my hair. I was taken to the shampoo area. I want to mention that I have natural hair. I get my hair blown out at least once a month and never have any complaints. At the shampoo station the stylist began combing my dry curls . I should have left then. She stopped once I pulled away from her. By the time I was done my back was soaked!!! Ok so the blow dry begins. She put some product in my hair I didnt see what it was because I was turned awAy from the mirror. The blow dry was painful. I know you have to pull to get it straight but with natural hair if you are to comb it you go from the ends up to the roots. Lets just say they aren't knowledgeable about black texture. My hair type is a 4b. It's full and curly. After blow drying it she added more product. While it was getting flat ironed I noticed my hair was really stiff. I still hadn't seen a mirror but I was looking at my ends. I touched it and it was so greasy. After flat ironing it she went over it again with the blow dryer and then again with the flat iron. I am not at all pleased with my hair. I can sense the heat damage. Ladies stay away from this place. $35 down the drain and no one even tried to rectify what was done. I grew up in this neighborhood and relocated to NJ 10+ years ago and I will still drive to this salon only to get my hair done. I won't let a few tolls hinder me from getting my hair done at my favorite Dominican salon. The salon is very well maintained and clean and after a recent expansion the adjoining salon offers mani/pedi's. This is a full service salon. The weekends and holidays are crazy. Went to get my hair colored a brownish shade and paid $75 but ended up with still some grey hair behind my ear on the left side. I called them and they agreed to recolor. However, when I went the owner rudely refused to do anything about it. She said it was excepted to have some gray hair. Dumbest thing I ever heard. I cant even begin to describe the level of unprofessionalism at this Salon. I came in on a Saturday to have a color change done to my hair, I was told at this point that the process would take over 5 hours. Being a Saturday it was very busy in the Salon so I completely understood that this was not possible to be done today. I spoke to the Salon owner's daughter and she explained the process to me and that I could book an appointment with to come in at 9 AM on Monday to get the job done. I called that Monday morning at 8:30 and said that I could not come in at 9 but I will be their at 11 the person answering the phone said yes that is not a problem at all. I came in at 11 the three women their said that today is "***" (the owner's daughter) day off and she is not here she would be the only one to do my hair. The woman then called her and told her I was their. She spoke with me on the phone and lied saying that she was their two hours ago. I booked this appt. two days prior and she didnt even show up after it being the secound time that I came their for the same job. She then told me that I could feel free to go to another salon. Which I highly reccomend to other costomers who are considering to come here if they want to work with respectful people. They clearly do not care about their coustomers.
