The bolognese was good but a little polite. It could have used a little more pop. The meatballs, though, clearly had Italian sausage in the mix and they sang. Big flavor and a nice texture. Then dessert showed up. The Italian cake quietly stole the entire meal. Light but firm cake, a beautiful nutty flavor, and just the right amount of crème filling holding it together. Lasagna is not a canvas for creativity. It is a covenant. A sacred agreement between a restaurant and its guests that says: we know what we're doing here. This dish broke that covenant, shredded it, and apparently used it as a garnish. My recommendation? Locate the nearest Italian grandmother. Apologize to her. Take notes. Start over.
