Hargiss Stringed Instruments - Came in here to buy an A string for a thrift store uke and he put one on for free! Fantastic place!

So many one-of-a-kind things here. The most beautiful ones are made here by John, the luthier/owner. He's happy to talk to you about instruments and to show you around his shop and the rest of the building - part of it is a vintage theater, the kind that used to be found in all parts of Omaha. Fascinating! Not long ago I stopped in to look at guitars. Mind you, I don't actually PLAY guitar, but I have gotten to a somewhat competent level at ukulele and baritone ukulele, and therefore I am craving the novelty of something new, that I can be bad at. I mentioned this to the woman working there, and she said "well, why don't you just take a class with John and he can teach you to build one"? Wow, this woman GETS ME. A total level up from what I was considering doing. I'm still thinking about doing this. But on this visit, I was just here to get a string, as moments earlier I had purchased a uke at a thrift store and it had a broken string. John had his assistant put on the string. He offered to show me how to put on the string, but since I already know (but just didn't have a string) I looked around the store and stroked a lovely cat on the counter. Which she enjoyed until she abruptly didn't, we know how cats are. Anyway, John wouldn't accept any money for the string or for the putting-on of the string. That was nice. Great place!

It is extremely hard to find where the crack was and the bridge looks like it never had come off. Everything sounds and look as it did before. Thank you again for a superb job.

Area musicians, especially non-guitar players, have to be thankful for a store like Schmitt. It's…read morejust about the only place you can get repairs on your woodwind and brass instruments locally. Add in school band instruments and supplies, sheet music for beginners and professionals alike, enough guitar equipment to satisfy axe heads in a pinch plus a large showroom of pianos, and you have a centrally-located music store that's been serving Omaha for decades. There's also practice rooms on the lower level if you or your kids are interested in taking private lessons from local teachers. I took clarinet and saxophone lessons at Schmitt from Leonard Eby. As much as I hated going there with my brother and dad just about every Sunday for 10-plus years, the musical education Eby provided me with is invaluable and helped earn and keep first chair in the wind ensemble throughout high school. Not to mention build the foundation of a smalltime music career that has allowed me to play on the best stages of Omaha and travel from NYC to LA and play at international music festivals such as SXSW. Going in there yesterday to buy some clarinet reeds for the first time since the early 2000s reminded me of all this. I'm so glad Schmitt is still here. Hopefully it'll be here forever.

Always willing to help if you have questions but doesn't hover if you want to just browse and check the guitars or banjos. I used to think Rich in repairs was great too until I brought in my Martin guitar last year for repairs. It had got to dry and the top cracked. Rich said he would need to humidify it to start with then he could make the repairs. He did also mention that there had been a lot of guitars brought in for the same problem and it might be 2 or 3 months before I get my guitar back. No problem. I checked back about 4 months. Not ready yet. I checked back about 6 months and he said the repair was made and he showed me and explained what he had done done and that he just needed to complete the finish on top. It's a black guitar. He said it would be about 2 weeks. No problem. I checked back in about 6 weeks. Not done. He said probably 2 weeks again. I checked back in about a month. Still not done. In total he had my guitar for 14 and a half months. I just got it back today. I didn't see Rich. A lady came out to see me then she went back to see about my guitar then came back to the front and located it on a shelf. She said it was finished. I asked why I hadn't been notified that it was finally done as Rich said he would do. She told me that a voicemail had been left for me. I am certain I did not receive a voicemail and I also checked with the repair area that they had my correct phone number on 2 separate occasions so I could be notified when repairs were complete. Ned from the sales department has called me on on a few occasions in regards to a lay away I had going. He has also left me messages. To be totally transparent about this situation I will say that I was not charged for this repair today but I still feel very mistreated as over 14 months of having my guitar seems very neglectful. For at least 8 of those months a decision was made to spend time working on someone else's instrument instead of mine and then I still didn't even get notified when it was done. I would really hope that my case is not a common occurrence but it really did happen and I think very unfair. I hope whoever reads this is treated better. Jerry Majerus 406-208-7127

Adkins Guitar Lessons - Reception area for parents!

Adkins Guitar Lessons

I'm a little nervous to write this review…read more... Because I honestly think Zach is the best guitar instructor in the Omaha area and want to make sure this review does him justice. Having had lessons from different instructors over the course of a few years, I never could quite find the right fit, until I started taking lessons with Zach. Zach makes a conscious effort to be a "non traditional" guitar teacher; he doesn't want to make the instrument more difficult than it needs to be. Many instructors (including several I've encountered) tend to make guitar seem needlessly difficult. It's almost like they thrive on the difficulty (theory, repairs, etc) to make sure their students keep coming back. Zach, on the other hand, is able to articulate and teach 'difficult' concepts clearly and without unnecessary confusion. For example, I am very interested in music theory. In one lesson, Zach was able to teach me theoretical concepts that would've taken me months to learn and master without his expertise. Furthermore, I don't think there's any guitar teacher that will go out of their way for their students like Zach. Very recently, I told him I was interested in learning a little about guitar repairs (truss rod adjustment, bridge adjustments, string changes, etc.) During one lesson, Zach spent the time to show me how to do general maintenance, like string changes, so I wouldn't have to pay places like Guitar Center to perform regular maintenance. However, there was a hardware problem with my guitar. So, instead of directing to Guitar Center or somewhere similar and having me pay to get it fixed, Zach wanted to make sure that I was taken care of. He took time out of his busy schedule and brought my guitar to an expert guitar technician who was able to fix the problem. I acquired no additional expenses, and now my guitar has a custom set up and plays like a dream. If you are at all curious about learning guitar, you don't have to look any further. Zach is a top-tier teacher who will fully invest in helping develop your talent.
