Today was my second time seeing Dr Tan. The woman who did the preliminary exam was lovely. However,…read morefrom the moment Dr Tan came in the room he seemed very rushed. He proceeded with the exam and I explained that my reading vision had gotten worse. He spent just a minute or 2 on the distance exam then flipped over to the near vision exam, which consisted of having to say which type of 12 intersecting lines were darker, the vertical or horizontal. There was no explanation and in all my eye exams throughout my life I don't recall ever doing this one. It was honestly hard to tell, they mostly all looked the same to me, but I did my best to answer. Well I must have been giving the "wrong" answer because Dr Tan actually started getting irritated at me and repeated my answer back at me basically yelling at me. I wish I had ended the exam right at that moment, called him out on this insanely unprofessional behavior and walked out but I was so taken aback I didn't know what to say. I did say "do you not believe me?" which tells you how crazy the interaction was. The exam ended and he proceeded to talk in circles about my prescription, and of course warn me that my prescription is so terrible that I should not order glasses online. I think I will go somewhere else from now on where the doctor doesn't yell at the patients.

Earlier this year, I decided to give Target Optical a try since, quite frankly, it is so darn convenient. I am buying my groceries every week here anyway - the perfect place to come back and pick up my glasses and contacts when ready. Theresa and Quiana are so much fun if you are lucky enough to have them working, and help you, on the same day! Not only did I get my exam (Optician was very polished and professional - I don't remember her name) but I sat to order everything and they were just so helpful. We laughed and talked and had fun during what might normally be a "boring" visit. Special shout out to Quinana who is just so darn fashionable with her lipstick matching her glasses, all of which she mentioned ...come from Target! Both ladies were super nice and I love my new glasses! Will make this my "one stop shop" for eye wear.

All of the optometrists my mother had taken me to in the past informed us that my strabismus wouldn't allow for anything but thick lenses. Thanks to Dr. Nancy, by the time I was at my eighth grade graduation I was rocking contact lenses and had a pair of glasses with "normal" looking lenses at home for when I felt like wearing them. Dr. Nancy is well informed and up to date on research in the field of ophthalmology. She is happy to answer any questions that I may have (I tend to ask a lot of medical questions because I am a biological scientist). Years later, I now take my daughter to see Dr. Nancy and am willing to drive from my work in Evanston to Oak Park during rush hour.
