I noticed while driving that I wasn't able to see some of the street signs as well anymore and was terrified of the thought of me needing glasses! But Mark reassured me that they'll help me through the process and help pick out a pair that best suited my face. And they did exactly that ! I hate going to the optometrist. I hate it more than going to the dentist (I actually like going to the dentist). I think it's something about having to read letters (was that a C, G, or O??), answering questions that seem to have right and wrong answers, and things poking me in the eye. I hate it. After YEARS of having unpleasant eye exams at an unhappy place, I think I've FINALLY been rewarded with optometry nirvana. I made my appointment at Compass Eye Care with Dr. Licup (pronounced like hiccup with an L instead of an H) about a week ago. Soon after I scheduled my appointment, it felt like I got something trapped in my eye for HOURS (at least four). I called and talked to a receptionist who said that she would have the doctor call me. He called me that evening and was so nice and patient with me on the phone. Remember - I wasn't even a patient at that time and he still treated me with respect! I went to my appointment today and was shocked that they had notes about my eye issue! They really cared and took copious notes in their computer system. *melt* Anyway - the space was modern and spacious, yet inviting. I liked the sterile, well-lit atmosphere. I liked the professional, yet personable ladies behind the counter. The casually dressed temp girl (I assume she was an assistant), brought me back to a room on time. She was very friendly and I was digging her fun approach to eye tests (look at the air balloon, read these lines, what number is this, etc.). She took me to another room when she was finished and Dr. Licup came in. He was super smiley (I swear - the man did not stop smiling the entire time!), but sincere. He did all these procedures that I normally find extremely troublesome (e.g. putting eye drops in that make my eyes feel funny) and he made them tolerable. I absolutely LOVED how he showed me video eye displays that demonstrated stuff. He really took the time to help me understand why some people are near or far sighted. The best part is that I don't need glasses! My other place tried to get me to buy glasses EVERY freakin' year. After reading the reviews was well informed for the exam and declined the additional services. Overall, the process was fine. It was after that things didn't feel right. I went back to look for glasses (first ever pair) and didn't really find any that I liked. I asked for a copy of my prescription and it felt like they didn't want to give it to me. Note, I did not get any paperwork after original appointment so no way to track for my own records. Once I got the prescription I shopped around and found a pair of frames I really liked. I called them and asked if they could order and they said they didn't carry the brand. I went online and to order I needed one more measurement, the pupil distance. I had to go back and ask for this since it was not on my paperwork. The young lady at the counter asked if I ordered glasses from them before and I said no. She then said it would be $50 for them to give this number. I found this to be a bit excessive and walked out. I get if they need to sell glasses to make money, but if they don't have the style and can't get it then charging $50 for 1 measurement is not the way to win return clientele. read more

For my first visit to an eye doctor in over 15 years, I selected Dr Licup, honestly, because I didn't feel like talking on the phone that day and Eye Compass had online appointment schedule - a plus for any technology saavy person who doesn't like talking on the phone anymore than required. I was able to leave notes in my online scheduler so I mentioned that I had the feeling of lashes in my eye for nearly a week and there was nothing visible. The assistant, Erica, called me back a few hours layer to see if I wanted to come in the next morning (a Saturday) and have it looked at. I made the appointment and decided to have my eye exam at the same time. Two birds, one stone. My experience was GREAT!!! Every step was explained to me clearly. Any question or concern I had was answered very honestly. Turned out my eye lashes were growing further inside of my lash line than normal and were rubbing on my eye (that was probably T.M.I....). Dr Licup zoomed in on his magnifying machine and took a picture with his digital camera to show me exactly what he was talkng about. Erica was very helpful in helping me understand how my insurance works and applies to my services. I am excited to have found a solution to the problem! read more

I was a Lens Crafters patron since I was a little kid. But then a couple years ago after a visit that my insurance didn't cover I was pretty set on finding a new place. Fortunately, Compass is within my insurance plan. I have been going there for three years now and don't have much to complain about other than the prices of the glasses and contacts. Great news though, they give you your prescription without giving you hard time so I am able to order my contacts and frames elsewhere if I want to. They take detailed notes for each of your visits so they can reference what you talked about and your history more quickly and in detail so there isn't much brining the Dr. up to speed on anything during visits. Overall, the professionalism of the staff is pretty great. They are friendly, helpful and pleasant to work with. The first time I came in I saw Dr. Licup, but since I believe he left the practice I have seen Dr. Tan the last two times I have gone. The prices of their frames are pretty expensive, they have a limited selection of designer frames so if you want variety then this may not be the place to be. Also, the glasses are made out-of-house and usually take a couple weeks so it's not a place for people that want their glasses right away either. read more

Like other reviewers, I have been thrilled with my experience at Compass Eye Care. What I like more than anything about Compass Eye Care is that Dr. Licup is a really excellent communicator unlike so many other doctors of any kind. As a new patient, I felt that he took some time to get to know me personally before heading into the eye stuff. I love that! I even take my son here - Dr. Licup is a dad, so he knew how to act with my son. Totally unscary for the kiddo. The glasses that they carry here are super nice. And even though they were kind of tempting (LOVE getting new glasses), I didn't feel pressured into buying new frames because mine were just fine - Dr. Licup actually told me he wouldn't spend the money if he were me. Nice! The office feels brand new, with a contemporary loft-style feel and relaxing paint colors. The receptionist is great with insurance stuff and I've never had any weird billing issues. I went into this store to browse & heres my experience. 1st off, all the mens & womens frames are mixed together so it was quite difficult to search with those parameters. Next is the frames themself were overpriced, most being in the $350+ range. I did view a few of those & looked at the country origin, 1 was made in Korea the other was China so its my belief that the markup is quite great. Lastly is the way they responded to me & ignored me until i asked for help although there were 2 staff & 1 customer- whether or not it was because I was in a wheelchair I'm not for certain. Still love this place and keep trying to convince my husband to switch from his pricey doctor downtown. I'm thrilled that they now have the technology to ultrasound my eyes and skip any dilation whatsoever (I hate anything involving drops and it takes forever for my eyes to adjust back to normal after being dilated) Even with a weekend appointment, I was in and out in a reasonable amount of time and always get a detailed invoice and copy of my script. read more

I have been with Compass for quite a few years now and have been consistently impressed. If you are looking for an optometrist, make an appointment with Dr. Tan. If you just feel like killing time online, keep looking at other reviews and thinking about it for a while. That is, if you have that time to waste. My first eye doctor experiences were with a great local eye doctor who was thorough and attentive. However, he retired and his sons took over the practice and moved it to River Forest. There, I got to experience the worst of assembly-line medicine - moving from room to room and finally spending ~5 minutes with the doctor near the end of my visit. That miserable experience led me to look for a new eye doctor. As I moved around the country, I tried different doctors here and there. There were some pretty good ones. When I moved back home to Oak Park, I happened across Compass. Their friendliness, professionalism, and attentiveness exceed that of any eye doctor (and many other doctors) I've seen. The offices are clean and welcoming. Dr. Tan takes the time to thoroughly explain everything he does and what he finds. He truly has the heart of a teacher. Al really takes the time with his patients to not only get the prescription right, but to also explain what he is doing, why he is doing it, and what it means for you as the patient. Cannot day enough good things about this place. Best Eyecare I have ever received. Dr. Tan and his associate doctor Dr. Serenda are thorough and very friendly. The entire staff was friendly and professional and worked with me to find the best frame and contact lens fits. Most of the frames they carry are a bit pricier but they do have a nice selection of lower cost glasses to choose from as well. Everyone has been highly professional, prompt in service, and friendly each time I visit. I have great vision, so I cannot speak to their services with glasses or contacts, but Dr. Tan does a great job explaining what each test is looking for, and which are most important to me, personally, given my age, genetics, etc. My father has glaucoma, so I opt in to an extra "benchmarking" test (the one that insurance doesn't cover - $42) every few years or so, just to keep track of any changes that aren't caught by the typical exams. Dr. Tan has been great in suggesting, but not pushing the test, and his assistants have candidly told me that unless I start seeing big changes in the results from test to test, there is no need to do that extra even once a year. (On my first visit, when the extra test first came up, I was concerned that it might be a scam, but being a repeat customer, I now feel confident that I am being and have been directed honestly.) I was also delighted to see that I get email reminders for my annual eye exam, and can just follow a link to schedule an appointment online. Easy Peasy. read more

Let me start by saying I never post to Yelp. Opinions are just that - opinions. Perception is in the eye of the customer only. That being said, I needed to make an appointment to get updated glasses and contacts and I wanted to go back to Compass as I had such a wonderful experience at this office. I found them homey and friendly and they made me feel like part of the family. Now, to my point. As someone who works in the medical industry I take umbrage with the remarks regarding insurance verification. In this industry it is the patient's responsibility to verify their benefit information. Insurance plans are vast and complicated and literally your policy is different from every other policy out there. (HMO, IPA, Medicare and Medicare replacement, etc.). Even if your insurance was verified it is NOT a guarantee of payment. You, once again, are responsible. Reviews like this emphasize what is wrong with society in general these days. No one takes any responsibility for their own actions. People are very self-entitled. I will be calling Compass ASAP to schedule an appointment. I saw Dr. Tan today and can honestly say that this is the best healthcare encounter I've ever had. I never leave reviews but I had to this time. Through my visit today it is clear that Dr. Tan -values shared decision making -talks in a way that is easy to understand -is personable and fosters an environment where I can ask questions -values patient education -has staff that are friendly and professional A few areas for potential improvement: -online intake forms? -a verbal or written description from the intake staff of what the visit will entail upfront (step 1, step 2 etc) it helps the patient experience - A more thorough explanation on the wellness exam opt-in (OCT scan) upfront is helpful. Some points to consider including are: -what's the evidence base for it -who should consider getting it? -are the risks involved? All together, it was awesome! read more

If I can give no star for their fees & charges, I would. I called ahead to check for insurance acceptance and coverage for routine eye exam. I was told we are covered so I scheduled appointments for me and my 3 year old. We were told to fill out forms like all first time patients once we arrived, except there was a semi hidden phrase on the wellness check for $42/pp(Shame on me for not reading it thru) on the insurance page. Receptionist took my insurance card and returned it back to me without asking what I am in for. I was assuming since I scheduled routine eye exams for the appointment, she didn't need to further ask what services I am in for. Plus, I told her my 3 year old needed exam for school admission. Our insurance has a $35 co/pay/pp, that's $70 & $84 for not reading on both wellness check up. I ended up paying out of my pocket for $243 and they are billing my insurance $340 so our total eye exam came out to be $583. What freaking eye exams cost that much?? My insurance told me I shouldn't be paying anymore than my co/pay of $35pp and of course $42pp for wellness. Watch out for this place, no eye exam should cost that much. My family went here for four years because we live right around the corner, but the service has gone downhill. We just went there to ask about how to replace scratched lenses and the manager's attitude was very brusque, as if I were trying to scam them. I am perfectly willing to pay for a new examination and new lenses, so I don't know where that's coming from. Maybe he should have checked our patient history, we've been great customers. Thankfully, plenty of other places to go and my favorite optometrist Dr. Bauer is now back at the Kirk Eye Center. read more

I made an appointment for a routine eye exam 02/16/21 a month prior. On that day they shut the store down due to the weather, which is understandable, safety is very important. I had received an email the night before that said that they were shutting the store down and that they would follow up Wednesday morning to reschedule. I never received a phone call to reschedule. I called on Saturday morning 02/20/21 and was told that my phone number was disconnected (it was my old phone number) however that they did not attempt in any other way to contact me such as via email where they had contact me when they said their business was closed. I then attempted to reschedule but they have very limited availability and only during working hours and Saturday morning which I am unavailable for due to work. I think it is very important to follow up with existing clients. While extenuating circumstances happen such as inclement weather, continuity of care is necessary in the healthcare field and making sure clients are seen in a timely manner is essential. I have not had a bad experience here prior; however, due to the limited availability and decreased ability to accommodate when the business cancelled my appointment, I am going to look for other eye care services that are more willing to accommodate patient care when service is interrupted. read more

I have driven by this place a million times and never noticed it before, however it was one of the recommended eye care providers through my insurance, so I decided to give it a shot. Dr. Licup and his assistant Erica are awesome - both young, energetic and really nice. The office is extremely clean and modern and all equipment looks brand new. Dr. Licup is exceptionally personable and really knows his stuff. He explained everything well, did a few quick tests that no other eye doctor had done before and for once I actually trusted an eye doc to touch my eye with that glowing light (I really hate that part!) I also liked that he was attentive and didn't try to push anything (like lasik or really expensive products), but rather did a good job of informing me of my options. He and Erica stock the front with a great selection of current, smart frames for very reasonable prices, which I am excited to go back and buy, when I have the cash. Oak park finally has a hip glasses place - reminds me of somewhere you would find in the city. Dr. Licup is definitely the first eye doc I have ever met that you could actually describe as having an actual flare for optometry. You can tell he is passionate about it! read more

The exam was fine and the doctor was fine; checking in and dealing with reception, made the experience below average. So I arrive the requisite ten minutes early for my exam and start preparing the necessary paperwork. Reception asked for the last four of my wife's social security number to process insurance. My wife is a patient; they should have that information. But when I tell them that this is (i) not information I have memorized, and (ii) not information they told me to bring to the appointment I get an argument. The frustration was sufficient that I almost walked out (another employee ran to the front of the room to defuse the situation). And if I were going to this office for anything more complicated than an update of my prescription, I would have walked out. As it was, I'm disappointed that this office did not take the time to try and make my life easier (so a 4 or 5 star review is out of the question), and I really don't like it when I have to argue with people to whom I'm paying good money for what should be a routine service (which is why I can't leave a 3 star review). read more

I haven't had an eye exam from here yet, but I plan on going to compass for my next one. The staff are very nice people, the young lady Erica is very cool, and the place is very nice and comfortable. They even help you get the most out of your insurance plan. Most doctors intimidate me and make me not want to ask any questions so I can just leave. Dr. Licup is nothing like that. He made me feel very comfortable and made sure that I had no questions or concerns. He explained everything he was doing and suggested different remedies for my eyes being strained by the computer. Compass Eye Care receives 5 stars from me for several reasons. The quality of care performed, quality of services provided, and quality of staff and the environment were all outstanding. Dr. Tan is very knowledgeable and helpful, and had a great manner in discussing my eye health with me. I would say his style is of a "teaching doctor", which I personally like and respect. He explained my conditions and eye health to me in understandable terms while still being detailed. He invited my questions, which is something any doctor rarely does. Also, I appreciate they have the "wellness check" which I have also heard called "an optomap scan". The front desk staff was up front about it being $42 additional dollars, but that it was also completely optional. It was worth it! The technician assessing me before my exam was very skilled and pleasant. I do not have vision insurance, but they offered to try to process the exam as a medical claim in the off chance my insurance would cover it. Overall very good experience! read more
