I did like Dr. John and she spent good, quality time with me during my visit. The exam was comprehensive. However, on check out I was charged a contact lens fitting fee, despite it being all over my chart that I no longer wear contacts. I had to call the office manager to discuss, and the charge was reversed, and she was nice about it. Weeks later I got a bill in the mail for a retinal photograph for $40 that must not have been covered by insurance. There's no way to pay the bill online - you have to either mail a check or cash, or write your credit card info on a piece of paper and send it back to them. I wish they had disclosed there would be a fee for the photograph. I would have paid for it anyway because I am monitoring something in my retina, but the billing just seems all over the place. I'll have to call to pay the 'default' bill or stop by the office. I've also contacted the email listed on the website to ask for a copy of my lastest prescription for my records, as it recently changed, but have not heard back. I fear its an unmonitored account. My husband is also due for an eye exam, and I think the annoying-ness of the office will send him elsewhere for care.

Dr. John got me in (on her day off ) and took the time to examine me and let me know it wasn't anything too serious. Dr. John is very thorough and such a pleasure. This place feels like how a small town doc should feel! I really appreciated the time taken to do my and my son's routine exams. The employees seem happy to be there too! Hands down! Dr. Graves and his staff were incredibly helpful and resourceful. The quality care was amazing. As a senior person, I have also developed a retinal condition causing me to see shadow doubles of the edges if things - making it hard to read and drive. She left that practice and joined Dr. Combs. In the meantime our insurance situation changed and my husband thought it would be a nice thing for my eye care to try out C-----, a big box store that has an eyecare dept. At C------, there was a young female Dr. who did the exam, and I opted for the most comprehensive that they offer, and then told me she was switching my contact lens brand as mine were discontinued. When they came in, I was immediately discomfited - distance was fine, but I went from occasionally needing reading glasses to not being able to read anything within three feet without the magnifying glasses. Eventually I went back 3 times wanting to try some other lens, but C----- only offers a very limited menu, so I was stuck. They would not give me a refund for the lenses. A year and a half later, I went sheepishly back to Dr. Sparks and told her what had happened. As soon as I mentioned t he brand that had been sold me, she said that it was the wrong prescription. How did she know so quickly? The brand carried by C------ does not MAKE a lens with my prescription... I now have my new lenses from Combs Eye Care and I am occasionally using the reading glasses again, although my eyes are of course older. In the office when I went to pick them up they tested my eyes with the C----- lenses- I could read only the second line of a diminishing reading test sheet. With the new lenses from Combs, I could read down to the 11th line! I will never switch again.

As for how long the appointment takes, that's the nature of the exam. It takes your eyes time to dilate, so yes, you need to sit and wait while that happens. Bring your phone and play solitaire or something. My eyes are super important to me and if getting a thorough exam once a year means being there for an hour or so, I'm going to do that. If you're in a hurry, go see the computer eye exam at the mall.

She and Vicky were great, and the insurance was handled smoothly (we actually have a vision discount through our insurance). They were both professional and friendly, and Dr. Setterlun even asked my wife to bear with her while she handled an urgent walk-in (and gave the person the correct advice that a specialist was what he needed). The prices on services and glasses were competitive, even though we would gladly pay a little more after our multiple disappointments from the big chains (where my wife was misdiagnosed with a cataract, which Dr. Setterlun said was just a badly incorrect prescription.) One funny thing that I noticed is that Dr. Setterlun is a stickler with the answers to her eye exams... You can't say "I don't know" when she tells you to try and make out the letter! You need to try, even if you guess! It's a pleasure to have a local professional who gives such quality services. They both take their time to make sure everything is right. The office is clean and pleasant, although some of the equipment is older than I am (it takes me back to when I was the only kid in my grade school class who had to wear glasses). We'll stick with them as long as the practice is there.
