After reading some of these reviews, I would say the moral of the story is DO NOT BRING YOUR CHILDREN HERE. lol. I must say though, this is not a kid friendly store, everything is very on top of each other. This shop is one of the few remaining from the early days in Montclair center, when people loved unique antiques mixed with new items, never knowing what you will find each time you visit. I usually check out what they have when I am in town, and make a point to clutch my purse and other packages close so I don't inadvertently knock something over. This is simply common sense! I hope they continue in business for a long time to come, long after the chains have come and gone. A real Montclair institution. read more

My experience echoes many of the rest here. One male staff member had the nerve to admonish my 4-year old child who'd done nothing but walk through the store, rather than speak to me directly. I'm not sure where he got off thinking that was appropriate. I'd thought about purchasing a table from them and was chatting with another staff about the possibility, he'd asked me to accompany him to the back of the store to look at another option and the staff / clerk who made the inappropriate comment at the outset had the nerve to bark another snarky comment at my child again as we left. When people act in this much of a violating fashion, it always takes me aback. You question whether to lower yourself to their level and strike bank or move along in the peace of your day. It's particularly hard when it comes to my young children to choose the latter. I just had to say something somewhere. I'll email them this as well. Of course I won't be purchasing anything or supporting their enterprise. They're actually going out of business. Perhaps, deservedly so. read more

This review isn't on the store, as I never set foot in it, but rather on the owner. I was outside the shop with my 2 year old son and his 2 year old cousin one Sunday morning after the whole extended family had breakfast next door at Raymonds (which was delicious!). While we waited for family to finish their goodbyes, the 2 toddlers were having fun on the sidewalk chasing each other (which isn't terribly fast considering they are 2 year olds) and giggling. The owner came out and was huffing and puffing and grumbling under her breath then walked back in. A few minutes later she came back out and muttered more audibly "ridiculous" and "can't believe...". So, I asked the owner what was wrong. She said I should know damn well what was wrong. I said no, maybe she could tell me. She said the kids were driving people away from the shop. At 11am on a lazy Sunday, I doubt 2 toddlers are driving people away from an antique shop; I told her this, politely but firmly. At this point she became even more agitated and, raising her voice so patrons at the nearby restaurant could here, threatened to call the police. To call the police on 2 toddlers. Really? I was flabbergasted and asked her to please go ahead and call the police on 2 small children. At this she huffed and puffed and walked away. We left a few minutes later. But the experience was quite unsettling with her. I get it is her shop, and she wants to project an atmosphere inviting for people to come in. But to come and yell and threaten to call the police on 2 toddlers outside the store? Really? Reading from the other reviews on this site on the owner, this does not surprise me. read more

Very surprised at reviews citing rude or unhelpful staff. Two gentleman run this shop -- woman mentioned in the reviews does not work here (?!). I have shopped here for years when I visit Montclair (live out of town) and have found the staff to be unfailingly friendly and very helpful. They went out of their way last weekend to help me find a bracket to hang an unusual, heavy item. Also very helpful in my search for a small table that would fit in specific space in my small kitchen and fit with my home's eclectic style. Over the years they have helped me find special, just right items that I have not seen anywhere else. Love this shop and will definitely continue to visit when I am in Montclair! read more

i can never seem to leave thgis place without buying something. i find the prices to be high, but thats because a lot of the restoration is already done...a good place for diningroom tables and chairs. the owner is nice and tolerates me bringing my son in (probably because i dont let him touch ANYTHING). a must go if you want antique-y things without effort. read more

witnessed the owner call a customer a "disgusting pig" when the customer sneezed.(that's just the tip of the iceberg). I've also seen her engage in shouting matches outside the store, screaming things like "suck my d***". She will act friendly to a customer and once his or her back is turned, she'll let out a string of insults. Everything is overpriced, and I've seen them try to sell broken merchandise, and pass it off as "vintage". To top it all off, I know for a fact that she has purchased items from Target and tried to resell them for 3 times the price. The only redeeming quality about this store, is the man who has worked there for 20 years is a very nice guy and very helpful. If you are going to shop here, make sure what you buy is truly antique and not from Target. read more

Awful employees. My friend and I went into this store to browse, the employees were eyeing us down the entire time we were in the store as if we were going to steal something. I had brought a bowl of fruit with me and the owner made a comment about the fruit and I explained to him the lid was was tightly sealed on it, and he then exclaimed "well that doesn't mean you won't drop it and let it spill everywhere." I feel as if their judgmental actions and rude assumptions were extremely uncalled for. My friend and I became very uncomfortable being just two 19 yr olds alone in this store with the two creepy and rude employees. I also have read previous reviews and can't help but wonder if they judged us because we are younger, which is absurd because they should be welcoming all types of clientele. It's a shame because we liked a lot of their merchandise, but because of their attitudes we will never be returning. I literally created a yelp account so i could write this. read more

I totally disagree with some of the reviews on this site. Also they keep saying "she" I know the lady that has the clothing store next door is involved in this store but the older man and younger man who run the store, I thought were owners are the nicest people. I have bought many things in this store. I have returned them if it didn't work out with no problem. The 2 guys are very nice and helpful. No they are not car salesman bubbly with excitement. But quiet and offer suggestions if you ask. They have great items in this store they do not sell junk so prices are high. When I need something special like frames or artwork this is the place to go. As far as the woman she is next door at the clothing store most of the time. read more

So cute and eclectic. Totally worth the drive for me. I have never, not once walked away from here empty handed, without a trinket (or seven) to add to my home decor or give as a unique gift. Take your time and leave your kids tied to the parking meters outside, because its packed with breakables. read more

If I could give less than one star I would.. walked into the place with my four year-old son who touched a flimsy, knick-knack and a small piece broke off. The rude worker (not owner) in the store informed me I had to pay $25 for it. Stupidly, I handed him my credit card, then had second thoughts. When I demanded the charge be reversed he said "In the 19 years I have worked here this has never happened!" I found that very hard to believe and actually pity him for having made a career out of working in that store. When I asked to speak with the owner, the worker said I was frightening him (4 year-old child at my side). Finally, he got her on the phone and she was an even ruder, meaner, subhuman form of life than he was. Now I understand why every time I walk by the store no one except staff is in there. read more

Cluttered and filled with crap. The owners are rude (I'm being nice by saying rude since I do not want to curse on here) and will yell at you if you bring children inside (even if they are well behaved). The owner told us to get out because my niece was just walking around with us looking at all of the junk. Will never go to this dump again. read more

Although they have some very lovely items, the owner and the employees are the rudest people I have ever encountered. I had been there many times because a friend lived in the area. Each time I must have purchased $100 worth of products and was always satisfied. However, the last time I visited this store, it was very crowded and difficult to browse. I placed my items on the desk, and continued to search and someone accidently bumped into me, and a very inexpensive santa figuine was damaged. Unbenownst to me, the clerk took the item, and when I went to pay, they INCLUED the damaged figurine in the price. I told them, fine, I would pay for it, but to only charge me for that, as I would no longer be purchasing what I had set aside if that is what they intended to do. I am sure INSURANCE covers this kind of mishap. Grudgingly, the owner said he would not charge me if I purchased the other items. I did, but I NEVER have returned to this store again!!!!! read more

Can i actually give no stars at all. Rudest lady ever. Do not go there if you have a child or even a baby. I went there with my husband my 4 year old and my 9 month old for holiday ornaments. We piled up a lot of stuffs . My son was just playing around with his car on 1 corner of the store. He is well behaved enough not to touch anything without asking us. But the lady got so pissed up looking at him playing with his own toy that she yelled at him .We were still polite and asked my son to walk along with us. At the checkout the lady sounded super frustrated and my husband asked her why are you making us feel that you want us to leave right away. And the witch looking like lady said you are so rude and look at your children .. i mean children ....... seriously my daughter cant even walk mrs ugly witch. We decided not to buy anything and left. She should be reported to police for misbehaving with children. read more

do not leave this store with purchased items if you have not asked what their return policy is. when i asked the sales person what the policy is, she said 30 days store credit only. the debit receipt said "all sales final, no refunds"; the store receipt was stamped "store credit only." I tried to return the items yesterday, based on the sales person's information. the manager would not issue store credit. he said the ruling is: "10 days ONLY for store credit and you have to use that store credit within 30 days." this information was not on either receipt so i went back today to try again. i asked the person who'd originally waited on me. she said policy is the 10-day thing and that the policy was posted on the wall. the size of print and location of the sign (behind the counter) it was impossible to read. i suggested they post all their rules where customers could see them. what a concept. WHAT A RIP OFF. never again. read more
