I've been with American River Self Storage for nearly a decade.This month marks 10 years -- and that alone should say something. I've never had an issue with my units, the grounds, or the overall safety of the facility. I genuinely enjoy being here. Over the years, I've referred many people, and at least four of my immediate family members currently rent units here as well. Office management is amazing Scott and Lawrence deserve real recognition. Scott is the on-site backbone of this facility -- the one you see constantly staying on top of the grounds, making sure everything is clean, maintained, and running smoothly day in and day out. His customer service is phenomena; he's dependable, consistent, patient, respectful, and always willing to assist. Lawrence is also phenomenal to work with -- professional, helpful, and always clear when handling anything that involves paperwork or questions. Together, Scott and Lawrence make the office run the way it should, and they're a major part of why I've stayed loyal all these years. When I need something done, they make the process simple and straightforward, every time. To be transparent, I do avoid dealing with one staff member: Ian. My interactions with him have been consistently difficult. His tone comes across condescending, like you know less than you do and he tends to complicate simple requests instead of clarifying them. A recent experience -- I was moving things between my two units and using the electrical outlet on the wall. I'd been plugged in for about two and a half hours with no problem, and then 45 minutes before closing Ian suddenly came out to tell me I wasn't allowed to use it. So it took 150 minutes for you to realize and address the issue. A few days later, I called to ask if they stil had any larger unit I oreviously discussed with Scott available so I could consolidate, and in the middle of the conversation he repeats, "And just to remind you, you also can't use the electrical outlets." At that point, it felt unnecessary. I heard you the first time I'm an adult, I understood it, and repeating it came off exactly the way my experiences with him usually feel. Aside from that, this facility has been nothing but dependable -- clean grounds, secure units, and reliable management. I've been here almost ten years, I currently have two units, and I don't plan on going anywhere else. If you're looking for a storage facility you can actually trust long-term, with staff who genuinely take care of their tenants, ask for Lawrence or Scott. They're the reason so many of us stay loyal to American River Self Storage. read more

Very unprofessional storage facility. Customers are treated poorly when interacting with staff. Employees have zero accountability and only care about your rent money. If you value customer service & ALL the amenities a storage facility promises. DO NOT RENT HERE. They are some of the highest rent in town as well. AVOID. read more

Uncommonly great service. I only recently rented a storage unit here, but I've now talked to two or three of their staff members (once over the phone and not sure if I met that person later in person or was helped by another staff member). The best storage in Sacramento!! Hands-down, the cleanest and most knowledgeable staff I have encountered at a business. This is the first time I've ever needed a storage unit and I am happy to say, American river self storage is the only place I trust to keep and maintain my belongings until I can have them in my possession again! It's not very easy to please this old lady, but American self storage has done this for me! I used American River Self Storage for over a year after moving here. The hours are normal and I never ran into a problem, but sometimes I did wish they were open until 8 on week nights, but 7 was ok. The units do have a lot of rodent poison traps, but they must be working because I did not see any evidence of problems with my stuff when I finally moved out a few weeks ago. read more

I came in from moving into my place and I could not fit everything in there and he literally helped me and my family through the process of getting a storage unit. He was beyond patience with my family because so much had happen for them to get there and he was such a blessing. His smile could change anyone's day I mean he is just super awesome. Rented a couple units here for over 2 years and just recently moved my stuff out. Every time I came in to pay or get into my stuff or call in with a question, the office guys were SUPER nice. I never had any issues with the facilities being unclean or pests. One thing I really appreciated was the level of security - they are monitoring everything, all the time, and have a bunch of alarms. For example, you have to key-out and back in to the gated area in order to go from one of your units to the next, otherwise alarms go off and security shows. Kind of a pain when you want to go from one building to another, but reassuring because you know that your stuff will be really safe here. Another reviewer mentioned that they had something damaged because the units get hot - I would agree that if you are in a one-level building that is not temperature controlled, then yes, it can get pretty hot near the roof. I had a unit in this kind of building for about a month. Maybe don't have so much stuff that you have to pack floor to ceiling. Or if you do, maybe recognize that Sacramento gets REALLY hot in the summer and directly under a tin roof is not a good place to store your valuables. You can easily spring the extra $20 (or whatever it is) a month and go climate-controlled. Nothing of mine was damaged (and yes, I was packed floor to ceiling - haha!). I would definitely rent here again if I needed extra space. read more

All of my belongings spent about 10 months in American River Self Storage, and I have zero complaints. Too bad Tim H. didn't mention what has "gone downhill," or I would do my best to confirm or refute... But in my experience the facilities are (1) clean, (2) safe, (3) very well climate controlled, (4) conveniently located (for me at least), and (5) very reasonably priced. The staff is also friendly and straightforward about all of the rules, terms, conditions. Would not hesitate to store my things here again. read more

I recommend if you're storing anything valuable or nice furniture make sure you cover it with blankets or something because they do have a serious mouse and rat problem! It was nice to see rat traps in the hallways at least they're giving a effort of killing the rats off. The storage units can get very hot in the summertime if you have anything that might melt make sure that you put that down lower in the storage units or it will get destroyed. read more

American River Self Storage is as good as it gets in my opinion. I have a climate control unit on the second floor - everything is right about the space including hallway lighting across from the unit - nice since one doesn't have to bring a flashlight or battery power lantern. The elevator is only for items being stored/removed - humans need to use the stairs to gain access to the second floor. Never had a problem with vehicle parking - always park next to the building. Here is a tip and a request... = Pay for a year in advance and get three months additional for free! = When you sign up use my name as a reference and I'll get three months additional storage for free. The only negative: They are closed on "normal" holidays like Labor Day, Memorial Day.....etc. All those 3-day weekends that are PERFECT for moving in/out of a storage place. Overall I was initially happy with this facility. It was clean and there was no issue with our stuff while it was there. That said, the reason I'm giving a 1 star review is this: I paid for my unit for the month at the end of September. They told me my payment was through 10/23. I called in early October to let them know we would be moving our belongings on 10/8. I asked if they could reimburse me for the days of the empty unit (between 10/9 and 10/23), they said no, "there is no way we can do that because you already paid us"....OK? I said fine, no worries. Being a regular person with a real life the storage unit slipped my mind. I called 10/23 because I realized our time was up and I needed to complete the closing paperwork. I was bike commuting that day so I asked if I could come the following afternoon. They said yes, but they would have to retroactively charge me for 2 days, because my unit was actually up 10/22. It's $13, granted. But I find it completely ridiculous that they "can't" reimburse me for days I've pre-paid for an empty unit but they "have to" charge me for 2 days. It is shady and reflects poor customer service to squeeze every penny they can out of their customers. read more

Rates go up more than they go down. I can not wait til I can get my stuff out of there. The place is convienant and usually fairly clean No complaints there . I only had one issue with a guy named Dean. I called in on the 3rd as every month to pay the fee a week later I get a late fee charge on my account. read more

Per Cali's comment, it looks like this company is taking a head in the sand approach. I would not feel safe storing here again. There was no followup and assurances that it didn't happen when they appear to not have even looked into it point to a laisse faire attitude. It may be that as long as you pay on time, whatever you want to do is okay with the management. This is unfortunate. read more

I keep some overflow work stuff here in a temperature controlled unit. The place is clean and the staff is super friendly. I only pay $42/mth currently for a 5x6 space which is a steal because other places wanted a lot more for regular non temperature controlled units. Another bonus is that there hours are a little longer than other places which is great when I'm trying to get there after work. Only down side is that I wish they had designated parking spaces inside the storage space because I find myself fighting for loading room sometimes when there are other cars trying to get stuff from the same building. Also, the unit I'm in only has a loading lift on one side of the building which makes it time consuming to get to my unit on the other side. read more

I rented a space here a little over a month ago and have had nothing but a good experience. When I came in the staff was friendly and they were very upfront about all of their policies and the rental agreement. The place was clean and the prices were the cheapest I have found. It was a little hard to find but other than that a great place for storage. read more

I have been renting with American River on off over the past few years and have never had a bad experience. The employees are always very friendly and helpful as well as up front about all rules and regulations. The facility itself is clean and safe. They have great free rent specials almost all the time and they never raised my rates or tried to force me to purchase their insurance.
