These are good, honest, friendly people, who do a great job cutting and ripping (that's cutting boards long ways)! Only place in the area that does smooth, precise cuts and rips (that I know of)... Needed exact copies of the shelf boards for the insides of the kitchen cabinets in our new house. So I called American Lumber to see if they had Melamine. They said they do, but theirs don't have white edges, so I checked at Lowes. They don't even have a table saw, and the guy in that department actually told me that their saw would not do a precise cut AND it would be pretty rough. So I went to Home Depot, bought some shelf boards, had them cut by a young guy who scribbled big marks on the boards with a ballpoint pen. Of course those cuts weren't even close. And Home Depot will not rip (cut long ways), so I left the cuts there that were too short (equaling one whole long board I didn't have to pay for), and brought the stack of shelf boards that were too long to American Lumber for precise cutting and ripping. I'm telling you honestly, in all my years of trying to cut boards myself, or having them cut at different places in Sacramento (when I lived there for a few years) and here in Modesto, I have NEVER seen smoother, more precise cuts on boards of any kind. Also, their labor rates are very reasonable, especially considering that you won't have to buy an expensive table saw to do it yourself, or put up with cuts that are way off, and / or pretty rough at the hardware stores. read more

Okay, I needed a small piece of hardwood (5/16" X 71/2" X 36") for a couple of drawer sides on a vintage dresser my wife and I are renovating. I call around and find that American Lumber has a full millwork shop and can do the job. I stop by on my lunch hour today and talk to a nice guy at the counter and tell him what I need. He says to "go out to the shop and talk to Israel," so I do. I walk over to the shop and Israel is busy loading a truck, but finishes within a minute and asks me how he could help. I start telling him what I need as we walk over to the scrap wood. After a quick look, he pulls out a nice piece of oak that's 1" X 12" X 38" and we agree that it'll do. Israel proceeds to mill it down, first with the joint planer to get the piece square, then over to the table saw to rip the width down to a workable 8" and then it was over to the bench planer to take the thickness down to about 1/2" and last he ran it through a really nice belt sander to take it the rest of the way down to 5/16 of an inch. At this point I'm running the numbers in my head and figuring $20.00 conservatively, $3.50 per foot for the Oak, and at least $10 for the millwork. So I thanked Israel and took the piece back to the check-out to pay for it. Walking back into the showroom and up to the counter, I notice that there's a different guy now and I start to explain all of the work that Israel did to get the piece milled down. Just then the original guy I talked to, walks past us headed for the door and as he passes, he says to the cashier and I "oh that's all you needed, just go ahead and take it" ... needless to say I'm totally surprised and say "I've got to pay you something for this" but they both adamantly respond "no, that's such a small piece, don't worry about it." So I thank them both and leave, thinking that as soon as I get back to the office I'm going to have to write a review, and here I am. Bottom line, I've shopped at American Lumber off and on for years, and they have always been great to work with, but this was by far the best shopping experience I have had in ages! Sure, this may not have been a big job for them, but the gesture has cemented their place in my book of the best of the best. In an age of fleeting loyalties, I can assure you that I will use American Lumber for all of my custom mill jobs from now on. Excellent job gentlemen! read more

Not a great place to do business. While picking up an order spoke with Joey who was extremely rude in saying that me and my boss were lying about certain aspects of order.
