Disclaimer: I paid my way through college by working for Chittenden & Dylag some 15 years ago…read more That said, Chittenden & Dylag have provided services for my mother's house in Alexander, NY after I stopped working for them. I reviewed their quotes and work on the house. My review includes both my observations as a summer laborer and a customer. Chittenden & Dylag are a small, family owned business delivering service in Western NY (Western suburbs of Rochester through Buffalo suburbs, including Attica, Batavia, Corfu, Akron, Lancaster, etc.). The owners of the company are personally involved in estimating jobs, overseeing work and cleanup, and actively participating on the performance of the actual work. The owners of the company clearly care about Quality - that's capital Q Quality, like the metaphysical value described in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Work is done right for the right reasons with a good deal of intellectual curiosity given to even small details. I was on the receiving end of a couple 'lessons' after not performing a job well - a nail not laid perpendicular to the roof (crooked nails cause torn shingles & leaks), a misplaced nail, a drip of tar on a shingle. Attention to detail trumped a speedy finish. I observed care and quality in the work of others on the well established team (the team of roofers/siding installers tends to be well established and well tenured) - Dave Dylag insisting on everyone polishing their hammer before working on siding/trim jobs to prevent scuff marks, for example. This is the definition of a true Craftsman. Materials are of good quality, installed properly. Chittenden & Dylag pay attention to new techniques and materials to improve longevity and appearance. Personality wise, these guys are easy to work with - honest, not pushy, take pride in their business and work. (This review was triggered by my own interaction with a pushy, sly roofing/siding salesman that just left my house in Virginia - the exact opposite of my Chittenden & Dylag experience).

If you're thinking of getting a new roof -- go with someone else!! This place has caused my home…read moreand family more trouble than our ancient garbage roof ever did. We were quoted for a new roof on our home in April 2025 and work began soon after. The workers had total disregard for our property. They stomped across our front garden, left their empty cans in our children's sandbox, and left nails just all over. They also smashed and snapped a huge limb off of our lilac bush (I watched them do this carelessly). They left extra pieces of roofing on the roof that blew off into the yard as well as a significant amount of nails on top of the roof of our porch. I understand the work can be messy, but this seemed outrageous. I was picking nails off our driveway for months afterward. The real issues started this winter. We live in Colden, NY and are used to harsh winters with an old roof. However, you'd think after almost $30k for a brand new roof you wouldn't have to worry about leaking/ insane ice issues on it. We have had leaking in the past that we were told would be remedied with the new roof. Instead, the leaking has been significantly worse this year causing more damage through our walls and ceilings. The first time they sent a repairman out to address the issue I was not asked if we were home or if they could come on the property. They called and told me (again, not asked) they'd be at our house in 20 minutes. While I appreciate the quick response, I am a SAHM with two littles and really did not feel comfortable receiving a call that someone would be coming into my home while I was home by myself. In addition to this, they gave the repairman the wrong address and he ended up stuck in my neighbor's driveway which was completely torn up when they pulled him out. The repairman did nothing but take photos of the house and shrug. He told me he couldn't do anything because the amount of ice on the roof would further damage it. The second time this happened, he took a ladder up to look at the issue and told us it was because of the siding. Our siding is old, however we are not convinced the siding is the issue. He found more pieces of roof that'd blown off in our yard and told us he was going to leave to reshape them and come back later that day to reattach them. He never came back, and we never heard from anyone again.
