Because the 40-year-old double-glazed Velux skylight in our third floor, slate-roofed attic had fogged over irreparably years ago, we needed to replace it. We wanted another Velux, measuring about three feet by four. We searched the 'net for a contractor and came upon three suitably-sounding candidates. One, despite the hype of its website, never responded. Within a day or two, however, John Moir, owner of American Home Care nearby in Randalstown, MD responded by phone and email. It was apparent enough that Moir knew roofs and skylights inside and out, and his price would be $2,600, squarely in the ballpark. Days later, we got eight inches of snow, but it melted away in a week. Muir promptly showed up with his crew just after 8 am and they were gone by mid-afternoon. The work was quick, competent and flawless. We have an exquisite, unimpeded, leak-proof bird's eye view of the moon and the stars, with a crank to bring in the June air and a screen to repel bugs. Unexpectedly, Moir had to run off to replace some fragmented slate and didn't quibble about the cost. We've had a lot of work done on this 88-year-old colonial, and none has been more gratifying than this. read more
