I personally would never choose to fly American Airlines to Hawaii if possible. Nothing beats my first flight into Hawaii on Hawaiian Airlines where they provide free snacks, meal, and complimentary pour of Kauai's Koloa Rum. My husband, and I were definitely disappointed at the lack of in-flight complimentary meal for a 5+ hour flight both ways. They offer limited snacks - a pack of two Biscoff cookies, or salted pretzel mix, and water, soda, juice, tea or coffee. Other things are available for purchase, however the options are extremely limited. We purchased a cheese board for 10 dollars, and they only had enough sparkling wine for my first in-flight beverage on the way there. On the way back, we were told that the return flight had only been provided two sparkling wines for the whole flight, so I ordered red instead. They had no more cheese plates for the return flight, so the only item available for purchase was a 5 dollar can of mini Cool Ranch Doritos. Because we knew how limited their menu was, my husband and I made sure to pick up some spam musubi before our flight home, which was a great idea because we got into LAX at about 10:30 PM. I was also disappointed they had me check my carry-on even though it fit in the their luggage sizer on the way to the Big Island. This airline doesn't care about its customers. It flies planes that are not functioning. Two plus flights have had out of service lavatory-s. No food for first class passengers on 4 plus hour flight. It's painful. aa people standing around while many of us were waiting to check in. How do you spell cluster Hope I make my flight. They said they opened at 7, butt it's island time. 7 may mean 9. Who knows When I finally got checked in, the agent who checked me in was nasty - the worst aa employee I have ever experienced. More, they never posted or announced the gate. This is pitiful. aa should fire everyone at this airport and start over. read more

The lady at check in was awful!!! One they were so rude, two they wanted to charge me $100 for 1 lb over and wouldn't make an exception and three the bag scanner was broken so we had to leave our bags in the middle of an area while they opened them (0 security!). No tvs anymore, just a tiny thing to hold smartphones at a terrible angle, didn't turn off the lights upon takeoff even though the preflight instructions said they would. There was zero enforcement for the safety of passengers as people were moving freely about the cabin every time the seat belt lights were on and only one of the flight attendants had any semblance of kindness or people skills. My anxiety was tripled on this flight by the lack of professionalism and I'm dreading the flight home now. We pay so much for tickets to be treated like crap. read more

We will never book flight on American Airlines again. American Airlines (AA) had to eventually cancel our 5:30 pm flight at 10:00 pm due to mechanical issues ... after rescheduling the flight at 6:30 pm, 7:30 pm, 9:30 pm, and 11 :00 pm. Each time we were notified of the rescheduled flight time, the gate employees had no clue the flight was rescheduled. At some point, everyone was called up to the desk to get 24 hour food voucher. Finally at 10:00 pm, AA cancelled the flight. Flights were automatically rebooked - first for 11:00 am the next day. This was quickly changed to 4:00 pm the next day. Connecting flights were also rebooked, getting us to our destination 24 hours late. We called AA to see if any other flights were available. We were told there were no other flights available on AA, United, or Delta. Passengers were told to go pick up their checked bags, and go the the AA Service Desk to get a hotel voucher. It took almost an hour for the bags to arrive in baggage claim. 300 passengers descended on 4 AA employees at the Service Desk. After standing in line for an hour, we got to the AA counter. There were many passengers still in line behind us. The agent was polite, but neither he nor the supervisor were helpful in resolving how they were going to get this many passengers to the hotel. They said it wasn't something AA had any control over. We had to get there on our own. We were told to go book and pay for a taxi to and from the hotel, as there were no shuttle buses. We were supposed to save the taxi receipts and submit them to AA. So, we have a voucher for a hotel, and more food vouchers. It is now after midnight, and four taxis have arrived in the space of 90 minutes. It will be hours before everyone is picked up. I have never had as bad of an experience flying as I did with American Airlines from Hawaii back to the main land. I have had my luggage bags for years with no issues and after this flight both of my bags were completely ruined, I don't know what they are doing so aggressively with our luggage, but they are not at all careful. Just warning others. We paid for first class flights for our anniversary vacation to Hawaii from Ohio. On our last day before going home we were called to inform us that we would be loosing our first class due to a plane change. After several calls and hours of our last day spent on the phone plus getting several different stories we were hung up at last with no resolution. They are not giving a fair refund just a voucher worth part of what we lost in the price difference between economy and first class. We are not done working this at this time but I will never fly this airline again Ever! read more

Flight crew oblivious to the safety concerns of it's passengers. There really needs to be better screening as far as who sits in exit rows and the capabilty of those people to perform the tasks required in an unfortunate event. read more

Beyond disappointed. Boarding a flight for Līhue to LAX and there was a weight restriction so they offered 8 passengers $1,400 if they would give up their seat. My son raised his hand and they escorted him off the plane. He was one of the first people to accept the offer. After 15 minutes of him sitting there, a large family soon de-boarded the plane. The American staff hen informed my son that they would receiving the 8 awards, not him. They sent my son back on the plane despite his plea that the person in charge at American had already stated to him that he was one of the 8. The American Airlines staff was extremely unprofessional and very rude when he tried to defend his position. They were rude to me as well and even mocked us as we were re-entering the plane, when we told them what they did was wrong. We will not be flying American Airlines ever again. read more

I have to give BIG shout out to the ticket agents of our flight that was cancelled due to maintenance issues, on July 5th we were to leave at a little after 10 pm. Well they did us all extra amazing by shuttling so many people to an amazing comfortable resort with vouchers for food and beverages we had more than enough to hold us through until we got home. We splurged for first class tickets which promised we could select a meal for the flight. Never got a choice and suffered through a bad vegetarian meal during our flight out. We did everything we could to select a more appetizing meal for our return flight which again resulted in not being allowed to do so. All this happened in the context of a clearly advertised promise to allow meal selection with first class tickets. When I spoke with Aa reservations and customer service they were not impressed by the complaint or by the fact that they had reneged on a promised benefit. I traveled last Holiday Dec 23 to Jan 3 in Kauai HI. The lack of care from American Airlines and their employees was horrific! Knowing that it was the holidays we arrived hours before our departure with American AIrlines in PHX to Lihue HI. We noticed there was an earlier flight and asked if we could move ahead to this other flight. We were told no because our flight was on time and therefore there wasn't any justification. Mind you we, me and my partner of 27 years, were traveling First Class. There was nothing first class about the lack of customer service by American Airlines and their employees. Since we could not go on this earlier flight we found our way to the Admirals Club. We also had text sent to our phones automatically to update us on our flight. First one text came thru saying there were delays on the Chicago end of the flight. So I went up to the desk at the Admirals Club and told her our concerns due to the text messaging about delays. She checked the flights status and said, 'You are right that flight will never get to LAX in time for you to catch your connecting flight!' "Oh but wait she says, there is a direct flight from PHX to Lihue leaving very soon! Let me call the gate and ask them to wait for you. You are not that far from this gate." She made the call and while we were standing there the gate woman told her that there were no first class seats available. We told her that that did not matter and we would fly coach just to get on the flight. She told us to run and so we did. It took us 10 minutes to run thru the airport to another gate. When we got there the gate woman had closed the door. But we are here. I pleaded. She turned very hostile and told me that the Admirals Club woman had no right to send us this way. She said that she told her not to do it. Which was completely incorrect because we were standing there saying we would travel coach! So she turns us away and I start to walk away when all of the sudden I am having a full blown asthma attack. My chest seized up and I couldn't breathe. I dug thru my purse to find my inhaler. I inhaled more than I should have but I was afraid and could not breathe. My partner flagged down one of those transit carts to help us get back to the Admirals Club. We made it back and told the lady who had helped us what had happened. She sat down at her computer and started searching for a way to get us to Kauai. She booked us to Las Vegas, then to Honolulu and then on an inter island flight to Kauai. We arrived but our luggage did not. Mind you this was Christmas Eve day. Not knowing if we were going to have anything other than what was on our backs to wear we went into Hanalei and did some clothes shopping. Later that night our bags were delivered. I sent a letter to the board of directors for American Airlines to which I have not had a reply. Today is 2/19/17. It has been well over a month and no reply whatsoever! I think their lack of customer service at the gate is just an extension of the lack of service of the board of directors of American AIrlines. Except for the lovely lady at the Admirals Club everyone associated with this trip turned out to be less than stellar. We made three trips this year flying on American. One to Paris for three weeks, one to San Antonio for a wedding, and then to Kauai for the Holidays. Two of those three trips were traveling first class. Is this the kind of treatment you would expect paying top dollar? Not me... My thoughts are if you can fly any other airline DO! You'll be happier in the end. My review? American Airlines cancelled our 5:30 pm flight tonight at 10:30 pm . Stood in line for a hotel voucher for another hour. Now there are two hundred people standing in the rain as there are two taxis available to transport people to hotels. Plus American refuses to pay for the taxis. They have no shuttle buses and the manager hides behind the counter. It is now midnight with no idea how long we will have to stand outside in the rain. They don't care about us. I will never fly American ever again. If I could give them less than a star they deserve it. read more

I usually only get on yelp to give positive reviews, but this had to be the exception. If you buy 2 tickets on American Airlines do not make the mistake I did and think they will seat you together. To think I would want to sit with the person I am traveling with, how silly of me! And when i tried to call for the flight back to ensure we could sit together I was informed there would be an additional charge, just seems wrong! Trying to take advantage much?
