Definitely a top highlight of our trip. Preston, our awesome pilot, was warm, friendly, knowledgeable, and made us feel super safe. He even let us start with a quick prayer over the mics as we were lifting off. We flew with a group of four plus Preston. I sat in the front middle and was plenty warm in pants and a jacket. My friend was in the back with her husband and she was freezing in pants and a jacket, so wear layers in the winter - especially if you run cold. Despite the wind and light rain, Preston kept us steady and comfortable the entire flight and went out of his way to show us places we had hiked or planned to visit during our stay on the island. Doors-off was definitely the way to see all of God's beautiful creation without limits. Seriously, the parts of the island we couldn't have seen any other way were such a gift to see 360° from the air. Magnificent doesn't even begin to describe it. I took this helicopter tour in July 2026 as a birthday gift to myself. There were two helicopters departing at the same time. My pilot, Marcus, joked that he was a better pilot than an English speaker. Once we were airborne, however, I had great difficulty understanding him because of his strong accent combined with the helicopter noise. Unfortunately, my microphone also did not work properly, so I couldn't ask questions or clarify what he was saying. I was very disappointed to miss out on the commentary, which is such an important part of the experience. The scenery was absolutely stunning! I tried using the Maps app on my iPhone to follow our route, but the required safety tether crossed the middle of my phone's screen, making it difficult to use. After the tour, I spoke with the family who had been on the second helicopter. They said their pilot was very engaging, easy to understand, and shared lots of interesting information throughout the flight. Hearing that made me realize how different my experience could have been. For future flights, I would recommend requesting a pilot whose English is easy for you to understand if that is important to you. Given the cost of this tour, I expected to enjoy both the spectacular scenery and the educational commentary. Unfortunately, I only got half of the experience. Start to finish, this was an excellent experience with great customer service. I made a reservation months before our trip, communicate with the staff via WhatsApp. They were very helpful in discussing tour options for my husband and I. We decided to book a private adventure for the two of us, because during a previous helicopter tour experience we were both in seats where we couldn't see as well or get the photos we were hoping for. On the day of the tour, there was a driver there at the cruise pier waiting for us with a sign at the designated time. A short drive to their office, where we got weighed in (numbers are not said out loud or visible to anyone other than the staff) and a safety briefing. Compared to my previous helicopter tour experience, this was extremely well-organized, efficient, and low-stress. Great job! We hopped in another shuttle to head over to the airport, and it wasn't long before we were in aircraft and launching away from ground! I'm glad the first 10 minutes of the ride wasn't the most scenic part, because it did take me that time to get comfortable with the fact that I was completely open to the world below with just a standard seat belt keeping me from falling away! (They take safety VERY seriously - this was just in my own head!) Once I got past my fears, I was able to enjoy the views and they were indeed stunning. Our pilot was fantastic and gave a great balance of tour-guide knowledge and staying quiet to allow us to take it all in! I did struggle to use the headset microphone once we were in the air - I feel confident it was a user error combined with the wind of the open door. For weight balance purposes, my husband was sat in the front seat and I was in the back, and I only wish physics would have allowed us to have set next to each other on this amazing adventure! After landing, we were shuttled back to the office, and not long after, shuttled back to the cruise ship terminal. Everything ran exactly on-schedule and smoothly - kudos to whomever is running their operations and logistics! Tips: don't forget sunglasses (like I did) because you will really need them to block the wind if you are doing an open-door tour. Wear layers, as it does indeed get cold at altitude. Remember that you can't bring much of anything with you in the aircraft. The staff helped zip-tie our phones, so don't feel like you need to bring your own strap to bring your phone for photos. We have been to Kauai twice in the last few years and have wanted to do the helicopter ride finally we were brave enough to make the call and book the adventure and we're so glad we did! After researching a bit, we discovered that Jack Harter has been in business over 58 years and came highly recommended. We concur with the other reviews that Jack Harter was a very professional experience from the informational staff on the phone to the courteous shuttle drivers who picked us up at our hotel to our seasoned pilot, Nick who knew the islands well and was an excellent guide, trying to get us the best pictures and views of the island. We lucked out this day and the weather really cooperated giving us great views of even Waimea canyon that is usually fogged in. I think the timeframe matters I would suggest going later in the day as sometimes early in the morning it is foggy - we had a 2 PM flight. The flight is still windy, and the only dislike (other than the initial nerves of getting on the helicopter!) of this trip was that it was hard to hear our pilot as there was a lot of interference and noise, but we were able to see fantasy Island and Jurassic Park waterfalls beautifully, and the most epic views of the Napali coast! If you are planning on booking with this company please keep in mind that the seating assignment on the helicopter is based on your weight. If you weigh the least you will automatically be assigned the front middle seat next to the pilot and someone else. I booked this helicopter tour for my birthday thinking I would be getting a "doors off" experience but it was far from that. I had a restricted view due to the instrument panel of the helicopter. There was not much room to move left or right to get the view everyone else on the helicopter had due to me being pinned in the middle. So I was basically stuck with the view of the instrument panel during the duration of the tour. Had I known prior to booking that the person who weighs the least would be automatically seated in the middle I would have never booked with this company and booked with another company that allows you to pick your seat. My husband and I opted for the doors off helicopter ride which seats 4 people. There isn't a bad seat on the helicopter as two people are sat in the front next to the pilot and two are sat in the back. We saw farmland, canyons, the Na Pali coast, and because the weather conditions were optimal, we even flew through a volcano crater with tens of waterfalls surrounding us. There are lots of helicopter tours on Kauai but their open door choppers are top of the line and amazing to fly with. Our pilot Chris was outstanding and we leaned and saw a lot of the island. We had to cancel a previous trip to the island last minute and they were very accommodating and understanding. I loved the tour but not happy at all with the service or how we were treated. My husband is 260 so we had to pay for another complete seat. We did it and said ok until we got there. There was another man in another group that weighted more and was not charged extra at all. The we were not allowed to sit next to each other even with paying for another complete extra seat. Was told it was mandatory to be upfront and of course the other man got to seat with his wife in back. When asked they had no real answer for us at all. We were treated unfair and forced to pay more for an already expensive tour. We should have just lied about the weight like the other people did. It would have saved us $400. Also we only had 3 people in Our helicopter when others had 4 so no reason for any of it at all. Be WARE OF BEING SCAMMED !! read more
