I'm not quite sure why AA has such a low rating here at El Paso airport. There are only 4 gates in the AA section of the terminal at ELP, and at least most of the AA flights use smaller CRJ or similar regional/commuter planes. In our case, the plane from El Paso to Dallas was so small that even roller bags were too large for the overhead compartments. Passengers were given the option to get colored tags and drop their larger carryons on the jet bridge before boarding, and pick them back up at the jet bridge upon arrival in Dallas, or they could check them for free and pick them up on the carousel at their final destination. The 2 guys working the gate and doing the boarding were friendly and accommodating, as was the attendant on the plane during our very short hop to Dallas. Though the regional jet we flew on was a smaller plane, the ride was steady without excessive movement or turbulence. read more

After an unexpected hour long TSA line, my Girlfriend and I missed our flight to her graduation at 9am the next day. All the flights were booked for the rest of the day and it wasn't looking great. We went up to the gate and explained our situation to the American Airlines employee Ihsan, who went out of his way to make sure we made it to her graduation. He got us priority standby for the next available flight, and when we got confirmed seats, he personally hand delivered our tickets to us at the gate. Ihsan was a total life saver and I really appreciate him for saving me. My Girlfriend was going to maybe miss her graduation if it wasn't for the amazing customer service Ihsan and American Airlines gave us. read more

I rarely fly American and this is one huge reason why. I have more than 3 million miles with American Airlines and was flying co -chair with IBERIA from Dallas to Madrid. I have to state that my prior experiences with IBERIA prior to this incident was positive. When we landed in Madrid the Madrid Aeroporto was absolutely packed as many international flights converged at the same time at customs. As a result, It took us more than 45 minutes to clear custom as virtually hundreds and hundreds of people were ahead of us. We were really tired and nervous as our transfer time was only 1 hour! We then had to walk through several flights of stairs for more than 11/2 miles to take a train that was bringing us to Terminal 4 Gate K 68. The instructions at the airport are confusing and written in small characters. We did not see any agents for transfer help. We were stressed. We asked our son to run ahead to Inform IBERIA at the gate, as we knew that we were running very tight. When we finally arrived at our gate we were exhausted, sweating and obviously super stressed. But IBERIA did not wait for us and closed the gate in front of us. They told us to speak to IBERIA Customer services. Unfortunately, the IBERIA agent did not want to help us and was pushing us to buy a new ticket for around €1400. He told us, you missed the connection transfer you need to work with American Airlines. I called American Airlines and they initially told me that they could not help because IBERIA were the ones who closed the gate. This was an absolute nightmare as no one wanted to help. AA then informed me that I would have to purchase three new tickets for more than $2400. I don't give often a one star and I did to Iberia as I always try to be fair and give any businesses a second chance. Especially for the airlines industry that people love to hammer. But this is by far the worst customer service experience and transfer that I ever had. It is also sad that my wife and son needed to go through this. Thanks IBERIA for allowing such a tight- connections on an International transfer flights, where the recommended time is 120 minutes-.The 60 minutes time connection is just not sufficient if the odds are against you. Ultimately, when the AA agent Pamela came through; as she heard the IBERIA agent telling us that in order to speak to someone responsible (the boss) we had to go outside the security zone into another location, go to the 2nd floor of IBERIA ticket and administration building which was outside of Terminal 4. AA came through as they understood that this was a crazy proposition and another administrative whereabouts. They came through and saved the day and for that I am very thankful. But, for all Yelpers be aware that this is an extremely tight connection's transfer. If the airport has convergence of many flights arriving a the same time, you have to cut the lines and move ahead. Otherwise, like us you will be in a pickle. FYI- Normally according to the FAA regulations - if the itinerary was purchased as one ticket (as in: you have only one itinerary and one confirmation number), and the connection time was too short and you miss the second (or third) flight, you can rest easy, no matter what happens. The airline will simply put you onto the next available flight, free of charge. You just need to negotiate and hold the line for 90 minutes...... read more

The agent resolved my issue, but suggested I ask an agent at the ticket counter for an airport manager to talk about the way I was treated. When I approached the gentleman at the counter his reply was "I am understaffed, and I don't have time to look for this" He then suggested I look for a manager at my next destination. My flight back to LA from El Paso was not bad at all. It was a short flight, and pretty hassle-free. It was a very early flight, so I showed up half-awake. Fortunately, I had plenty of coffee offered to me in first class. This plane was smaller than the one I took to El Paso. No complaints here, however, as they got the plane boarded faster. My seat was comfortable, which allowed me to catch some Z's before getting home. I got a snack along the way, which was pretty good. It was packaged in Europe, and I'm assuming Belgium to be specific. I'm not big on sweets, but while travelling, what-the-heck. American Airlines doesn't play. I got really spoiled by Southwest and their laissez faire ways that I forgot about AA and all their old school rules. So here I am, on my way to New York. Sans luggage. Apparently you have to check in your bags before 45 minutes to take off. Lesson learned. It's their policy, I get it. And if this was any other airport I would've been there at least an hour and a half early (if not more), but it's El Paso where the TSA lines are never long and most airlines aren't bothered if you only check your bags thirty minutes early. But I get it, my bad. But the options were ridiculous... either be put on standby on another flight (and figure out the connections when I get to the first layover) or fly without my luggage. Ehhhh... there wasn't even an option to just fly my luggage on a different flight, but maybe that's better... it probably would've got lost or stuck somewhere anyway. But the AA terminal at El Paso is pretty legit. And I think it's still the biggest terminal. Pretty easy to navigate, but I'm really not fond of the check-in process. It's not nearly as streamlined as it should be even though they have self serve kiosks. Honestly, I waited longer in their lines than I did in the TSA line. For now I'm giving a solid 4 stars, but I still have my return flight to Chicago awaiting, so if something happens to go awry and we go down in flames and I'm unable to make a review update my last action item, just make a mental note that I would've downgraded to at least a 3, maybe a 2 if I had to sit anywhere near a kid. I couldn't think of a more perfect ending to this hellish week where pretty much everything went wrong and found a way to get worse. The flight attendants on my flight in were super perky... even though they gave my seat away to some jerk, and then I had to sit in his seat next to a kid who would not stop kicking the side of the my leg until I shot it a death stare and did the miserly 'get off my lawn' fist shake in their direction, and then they ran back to their parent's seats with their 10 million little screaming brothers and sisters also on the flight. The screaming was horrid, but on the bright side, I now got to take over that kid's empty seat... until the jerk who took my original seat complained that the child behind him hadn't stopped kicking the back of his seat since we'd taken off 2 hours earlier. Hahaha. Sweet revenge. Or at least I thought it was sweet revenge until the flight attendant suggested he move to the empty seat now available next to me. Ugh. WTF. I worked really hard to scare the kid next to me enough for it to leave and now this f*cker is going reap the rewards? OH.HELL.NO. Guess what? I'm taking both armrests now, motherf*cker. How you like that? I thought I'd had the jerk by the balls, really punishing him for being a douche in the first place, but then it hot me. The smell. This dude could not ever have worn deodorant in his entire life. It didn't even smell like armpit sweat, it was like that awful butt sweat smell. And don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about. It's what the indoor monkey house smells like at Brookfield Zoo. Just festering swass. 'Buhhhh' was the sound I let out between every span of me trying to hold my breath. I really wish I'd practiced holding my breath more under water as a child because I can seriously only go like 8 seconds before it feels like my eyes will explode. I tried breathing through my mouth too, but I swear I could taste it. It tasted like congealed chicken noodle soup broth -- no joke. Thankfully, it was only a 3 hour flight (that ended up taking almost 4 hours because, ya know, I'm lucky like that), so I didn't have to take in the toxic fumes for too long, and the beverage service distracted me from hating the world long enough to doze off for 15 minutes. It's not American Airlines' fault that our plane was full of degenerates hell bent on making the comfort level only a notch higher than that of everything that happened in the movie Con-Air. The plane was clean, cold, they made us check even our carry ons despite there being a ton of room in the overhead compartments, which meant we all had to wait an extra 15-20 minutes in the hallway for our bags to be pulled up, but whatever. I got to my destination safely and none of sh*t got lost or broken, so I'd consider this travel endeavor a success. read more

I am rating 1 because there is no zero. My original flight was 4 hours delayed at the time we were to check in. Not knowing what to do, my husband went to Alicia, the representative face of American Airlines at El Paso, for assistance. There was no line; however, she made him walked back and take the non existent line and return to her. My family and I were placed in another flight were we had an extra stop. A trip of 7 hours became to 12 hours, ending losing our flight to Dominican Republic that left at the same time we arrived to our final destination (Miami). We spend a lot of money on food, drinks in all the airports. American Airlines didn't offer any discount or apology to the customers that faithfully continue traveling with them. my disable veteran husband and I were to travel to a family wedding in Honolulu when COVID derailed our plans. we had purchased round trip flights using frequent flyer miles from our American express account for first class. Due to his numerous disabilities we needed the first class to facilitate his trip. when the wedding was rescheduled for one year later we found out that our American Express miles were changed into American Airlines miles and the cost of the trip had doubled. We paid will all our miles plus $1000 more. That was the tip of the iceberg and the beginning of a terrible experience for us both. As we were leaving for the airport we received an alert that our flight plans were changed. The connecting city was changed which meant that the configuration of the plane was different. I was careful to choose a larger plane which had outlets for my husband's oxygen concentrator to be plugged into and with the room for him to be comfortable. We did travel with enough batteries so we were covered but the plane we were put on had the first class seats already filled. we were shuttled back to business class seats. in addition, they were announcing there would be no food service on the flight. I checked at the counter - they looked at our tickets and said "you have first class tickets - you will get meals on board" since we didn't get to sit in first class, we didn't get meals served to us. with nearly 7 hours of flying time - that is unacceptable. The flight from El Paso to Phoenix was also not first class. Returning flights from Honolulu were again in business and the final leg was first class. so we paid basically twice for first class and flew a short flight from Dallas to El Paso on the final leg in first class. I had reached out to american airlines six times, transferred to four different customer service people who continue to note "you were in first class, so you are not due any compensation". My repeated response - "we were not in first class except for one short section." They repeat - "you are not due any compensation and were seated in the correct section." I have tickets noted as "FIRST CLASS" and documentation that we were not in first class. they have continued to use "gaslighting" to their incorrect position. FURTHERMORE - the wheelchair service we requested was not availalbe and I was put in a position of wheeling my husband and our carryons to the next flights. Theres was no concern nor apology no responsibility taken for all these missteps. I can see why American Airlines has 1.5 stars - which in my opinion is 1.5 stars too many! There is a big difference in the cost of coach vs first class tickets and why AA will not refund that money to us is a total mystery. that they don't care about my disabled husband and how we were mistreated, overcharged and basically ignored is well beyond me. we have never had such unprofessional, uncaring treatment by any business let alone an airline. American Airlines will get what they deserve with all their bad reviews - however, I doubt we will ever be compensated for the mistreatment and over charging for the first class seats we were never given!!!!! by the way - I sent this complaint to the american with disabilites site and while they were to help us - the complaint was sent to American Airlines and of course you already know, they did nothing. i still have all the correspondence and the tickets marked as "first class" which are now a reminder of a horrible experience. Rosie at the check in desk was rude and seemed like she did not want to help her customers. She was telling my husband and I that we needed to be responsible and be 45 minutes early. News flash we were the flight was supposed to leave at 6:20 when it got last minute changed to 6. She didn't even print out my husbands ticket at first and blamed it on us not telling her. First off when I was trying to check in on the kiosk both of our tickets popped up immediately, second he was standing right next to me HOLDING OUR LUGGAGE. Flew in from Phoenix to El Paso and arriving there was no one at the counter for American Airlines. I find out that my luggage is not in my flight. So I go to baggage claim and the representatives there are just a pair of liars and inconsiderate people. They said that my luggage will be sent home and passed for more than a week and every time I call they just say bunch of lies and says that bag is not there and it was sent to another airport. Drove 4 hours from Roswell, NM to El Paso, TX to take a chance on getting on standby after original flight has been cancelled twice in Roswell. In fairness, there was a blizzard but felt that if we didn't take our chances, we will be stuck in Roswell till New Year. Good news, AMerican Airlines counterlady was able to get us on standby for flight boarding in 20 minutes. After rushing check in and waiting in line for TSA security, noticed that we were printed the wrong boarding passes! AA lady printed my boarding pass twice and did not print my boyfriend's pass. TSA security was sympathetic, stating that was not the forst time AA did that that day, but had to go back to get correct pass printed. TSA allowed boyfriend to bypass line when he comes back and go through priority line so we can make flight (Thank you, ELP security!!!). On our final destination in ONT, was informed that out luggage was still in PHX! Aaaargh!!!! That's ok. At least we made it back to CA. Lessons learned. Original flight was to take off at 5:10am, then delayed till 5:30am and now it's delayed till 12:30pm. This is causing my family and I to miss a connecting flight and now we aren't getting home till 11:43pm. We were originally set to get home at 5:18pm. What an inconvenience!! We have our 2 small kids traveling with us. The airline staff at the ticket counter even stated that all of the earlier flights have been overbooked. This is for the airline as a WHOLE!! It is now my airline of choice. Sorry Southwest. Let me tell you our story? We scramble for a flight last minute. NOTHING OUT OF HOUSTON. BEREAVEMENT FLIGHTS UPWARDS $1000. We had two $500 vouchers for American (gave up seats for later flight back in December). Anyhoo... (Yes two chardonnays into my first leg), we are told by American no flights available from Houston. Cab you get to Austin Bergstrom by 2100hrs? Sure! We get a flight peace mealed together. Departure time 2135hrs from Austin (2.5-3hr drive). We set off and got one Stau after another (Stau = Traffic jam). We arrive at the ticket counter well before 9p as our ticket agent told us arrived 2045hrs. However flight departure now 2118hrs not 2135. We RACE to gate. We are determined we will miss flight and just try to catch another. Just as we approach gate 23 (20 to be exact) it is 2118hrs and gate agent yells Sampier (husband and I yell "YES!"). WE MADE IT! We get ticketed and boarded before departure. In flight we are trying to calm down... Staff (all) know we are on a bereavement flight. What do they do? Comp our nerve relaxing drinks (stiff -ETOH). 10/30/2014 Yesterday, my bag was delayed when I flew into El Paso from Atlanta with a layover in Dallas. It happens. I understand that. The way the situation has been handled is poor at best. I was told yesterday afternoon that my bag would be delivered to my home in Van Horn, TX that evening. That was a LIE. I called this morning and spoke to someone who said my bag would be delivered this evening after I got home from work. That too was a LIE. A few hours later, I received an automated phone call informing me that my bag would be delivered tomorrow via FedEX when no one will be there to receive it. I have no porch, so I assume my bag will be left on the ground all day, or not delivered once again. Needless to say, I will be flying with Delta when I go back to Atlanta in a couple of weeks. read more

The worst travel in my life. From the get go our plane was delayed from El Paso to Dallas for 2 hours. The planes are always delayed and broken down. On our way back home the plane was delayed from Connecticut to O'Hara sat for 2 hours in a hot plane. Then we were told that the plane was out of service and had to exit the plane to another plane. We finally took off and missed our connection in Chicago to El Paso. They didn't have any flights to El Paso for 2 days. So we had to go to San Antonio instead of El Paso. Our luggage didn't make it to San Antonio. I had to get a rental and drive to El Paso. They don't care about public service we were at their mercy. If you can try to book your travels with another air line. Poor poor organization read more

I am supposed to fly with American Airlines from El Paso to LA.. and let me tell you i haven't even gone and I'm already annoyed, they canceled my flight many times!! and they made many mistakes i am not too sure if i have a flight atm but it is horrible the day i was supposed to leave which was at 6 am !!! Absolutely terrible experience we booked a vacation showed up to the airport early messed around with their kiosk which didn't work that took about 15-20 minutes once we realized it was futile we went to the counter. The young lady said we needed to arrive 40 minutes early or she couldn't check our bags it was 6:01 and our flight was at 6:40 we had spent a ton of time at their broken kiosk and when we ask if there was anything we could do they said they could charge us to get us on another flight where we may be a standby for another flight getting us to our vacation a day late. We asked if we could check her bag at the gate and they said they would no longer provide us boarding passes because we were too late do you have to be 30 minutes early to get boarding passes and we had talked to them now for 10 minutes which put us past that deadline. We are now going to another airline to spend more than $1000 to book 2 flights to get to our vacation today because American Airlines does not care about their customers. I should also mention that when we said we were going to Cancun the girl at the counter looked at us with like we were snobs and was totally unhelpful and sympathetic. read more

The airline changed my return flight to an earlier flight without telling me. I showed up with an hour and a half before my original ticketed return flight only to find out it was too late to be checked in and missed my flight. Each agent I talked to told a different lie. The American Airlines agents said they called my travel agent. But they never called my travel agent because my travel agents usually email me immediately and when I called my travel agent to verify which flight they had me booked on, they were still tracking the originally ticketed flight. The American Airlines Agent also told another lie--that they called me. I received no email, messages or texts from them either. I was then treated like a delinquent having to stand by the next three flights (because I missed my flight they said) without getting on any because they were overbooked. When I asked why I wasn't at the top of the stand by list since it wasn't my fault, the agent actually said to me that it was because those other passengers were trying to get on an earlier flight and thy were revenue generating, implying that my government contracted ticket was not. They have absolutely no sense of good customer service and if it weren't for American Airlines having the government contract, I wouldn't fly with them. He said nope, everything is good to go. 20 minutes into the flight the pilot comes on telling us we need to have an emergency landing because the oil pressure dropped to nothing. I have never been treated so rudely in my life. I arrived and attempted to use kiosk to print passes in El Paso American Airlines. There were approximately 10 Army soldiers in a separate line, in full uniform, and about 8 people lined up behind a blue separator near the wall. There were three separate check in area 1. To speak with attendants at desk on right, 2. To kiosk (that had an additional line, and 3. For desk attendants on left. I was completely confused as to where to line up. There was no direction or useful communication from attendant (Celeste) who I'm assuming was running the kiosk section. Herbehavior was unacceptable. She behaved as if she paid us to fly. The people in line were not treated as customers but inconveniences. Most upsetting was the manner in which she spoke to these service members. They could be getting deployed or flying out of the country to dangerous areas. They deserve to be talked to with respect. She raised her voice at me because I inadvertently moved from my initial line to the kiosk (which I asked everyone in front of me if they were waiting for). "Ma'am you need to get back in line, everyone in that line was before you" (15 more people arrived after me in the line approx.) I asked her why she singled me out to yell at, when 3 people that arrived after me were currently using the kiosk. She then waved me to the line on the right (to check in at desk) with the back of her left hand, rolled her eyes, and said "just go over there." If She is overwhelmed working this area maybe she should be switched out with someone with more experience and customer service training. The gentleman that checked me in and the supervisor I spoke to were very professional. At the end of this interaction I noticed a lady with visual impairment standing alone near the wall by the check in counter. She checked in about 4 or 5 people in front on me. I asked her if she needed help. She stated "they left me here, they said someone was coming to help me but they haven't come yet." There was only 30 minutes left before her flight, so I guided her there. Who leaves a disabled person that is attempting to fly alone without assistance? Worst customer service! I booked a flight in November of 2015 and had to cancel due to medical reasons within my family. I did not have anyone to take my father, and since it wasn't a medical reason for me it was declined even though I had purchased the allianze insurance. Where is the voice for those that can't speak and may not have anyone else to take care of them. I then tried to rebook a credit on the account and not only is there now a $230.00 "rebooking" fee but I can't use the ticket on me and my family now. I can tell American Airlines is just out for themselves and not for their customers. It's frustrating. read more

Charges money for luggage, canceled by grandparents flight and never bothered to tell them, until they asked about it. They told them they would have to wait in the airport overnight, because their flight was rescheduled for the next morning. Never offered to pay for a hotel, like Southwest does. Very unprofessional, will never use again. read more

So our flight was supposed to leave at 259 it's now 626 and they still have no answer as to when our flight is leaving no communication what so ever from them. Horrible experience I will never fly American Airlines again. I wish I could give a negative star but there is no way to do so. read more

Simple weekend turnaround flights. Delays both ways resulting in missed connecting flights, one resulting in a necessary overnight hotel stay. I won't fly American again. read more

Three hour delay for mechanical then weather divert to closed airport with no services open. No food. Can't leave and get back through security. Will not make it home tonight. Will cost $70 for another night for dogs in kennel and I will miss event tomorrow I paid $1300 for. Thanks American / US Airways. read more
