When we decided to renovate our kitchen, we asked our friends for contractor recommendations, but all of them had had terrible experiences with their contractors. So we did our own research and met with nearly a dozen contractors. Many of them were just salesmen who didn't actually seem to have significant experience, while others insisted that we needed to totally scrap everything in the kitchen (which we didn't feel was correct). We were a little nervous since we were doing the biggest renovation job we've ever done. We wanted to convert our 2 car garage into an ADU - so we got a few bids - Fily with Amelfig Builders gave us a quote that was right in the middle - not the cheapest, but also not the most expensive. Throughout the project, he was very responsive, honest, and communicated everything that needed to happen and guided us through such a large project. He was very easy to work with and did a lot of coordinating digitally (google docs, spreadsheets, photos, videos , etc) which we preferred give our busy work schedules. We wanted to upgrade our condo in Malibu and they did it quickly and efficiently with extra attention to details and at a price much less than we were expecting. Fily did a wonderful job remodeling my one bathroom into two bathrooms. I had actually interviewed 10 contractors and was about to stop the search when I saw his ad, and I am so glad that I did. His price was not the lowest, but it was very reasonable. He was humble, professional, honest and reliable, communicated well, and proved to have an incredible work ethic. His previous clients were even happy to let me see his work to help me decide. I was very cautious because I had never done any renovating before and learned so much through interviewing different builders. Some zip through and give you an estimate in 15 minutes, drop their card before moving on to the next client to generate business for their company. Very few put in the time with you, helping to plan and figure out what you want even when you don't have the clearest vision. Fily was that guy. I appreciated that he was a former tradesman and worked for many years before he got his contractor's license to strike out on his own. Because of his experience, he had a deep understanding of all the components that went into building. He was very cautious of what may or may not pass code which was excellent in a project that required city approval. Before he started, he gave me a realistic beginning date so that he would not be spread thin and could dedicate quality time to my project. Throughout the process, he personally helped me select and get discounted tiles. He picked up heavy items when I could not. He brought up any issues and additional costs to me and made sure I knew what my options were before proceeding. He gave me a clear timeframe when everything would be done and actually finished a bit early. He was always available for questions. This doesn't mean that the process was entirely hand held. Be prepared to do lots of your own research if you are starting from a small knowledge base. Measure and remeasure the dimensions of your room and figure out what will fit and what you have to sacrifice. Ask and anticipate as many issues as you can before you start. Fily is the most honest and hard-working contractor I've ever dealt with. Our job -- a top to bottom kitchen and bath remodel that involved removing weight bearing walls and a livingroom ceiling soffit as well as replacing and refinishing a large amount of hardwood flooring and changing out a number of windows and more (essentially an entire re-build of the front of our 80-year-old home) -- came out beautifully and was completed on schedule and on budget. Fily and his crew showed up every day, worked extremely cleanly (especially considering the extensive demolition involved) and were totally responsive and helpful with fulfilling our requests on finishes and anything else my wife and I came up with.
