My back patio was built about 45 years ago and the wrought iron pillars were rusting, the wood they supported was rotting. I needed help. I also had concerns about coyotes getting to my little dog. They threw in free four windows for my bedroom that have gas between the panes to keep the heat down in summer. My wife and I recently purchased this home and the garage need major work. We contacted several contractors to get a quote. Juda did a large and extensive repair at my parents' house after they had a water leak under their wood floor caused by a damaged refrigerator line. I just completed a number of projects in my back yard and discovered that character counts. When all else is equal: character counts. Here are some premises for any kind of qualitative home repair that have proven handy for me: 1) if they don't come to look at the project, don't use them. Yelp allows you to send estimates and if someone sends you a price without coming out, just...no. You want someone to look at the work, tell you what the challenge may be, offer solutions and submit a bid. 2) Reviews count. And not necessarily good ones. The ones that interest me the most are the critical ones. Is there a theme in them, that when you look the contractor in the eye they can address it (I hired one person, happily, because someone complained and the contractor absolutely owned the problem - admitting to an issue is much better than fighting someone who claims the issue didn't exist or is your perspective). 3) Being able to look someone in the eye is consequential (assuming you are a fairly successful judge of character). Are they just selling? Do they hear you? Do their eyes shift or blur over when you're explaining what you want? I'll tell you how this proved itself. I had three different projects - replace a gas pool heater, repair damage in my solar heating system and build a new shed for the pool machinery. And here's something - there was some kind of problem with each of these (not cheap) jobs. And each of the people who came to the house, had good but challenging review and looked me in the eye - had something go wrong with the project. And each of the people I hired did the repair of what went wrong without complaining, without blaming me for being unclear and without charging me for the error. Which brings me to my EXCELLEN T experience with JUDA SERVICES. I bought the house with the existing pool mechanisms behind a wood fence which of the almost 30 years I've lived here has weathered, and been kicked to death by the electric company people who have an access point to a power pole at the pool equipment shed. (They have paid for repair to damage in the past, but damage is damage). I took 5 bids - one looked at a picture and sent a quote. One came and pitched a wood replacement and the other three talked about aluminum siding (which scares me because it looks artificial). All three were convincing and the prices which I found high were commensurate with each other, so I knew this was going to be in a certain ballpark. Juda's reviews were slightly more pleasing to me (all received good reviews or I wouldn't have wasted their time). I wrote Juda and said I wanted to go with him and anything he could do to lower the price would be appreciated. I didn't play anyone off of the others, some might, not me, I wanted to work with Juda and I wanted a little lower price. He offered a slightly lower price and I engaged him). He was consistently communicative (parts had come in, some hadn't, what day he would start, how long it would be) all upheld and if they were running ten minutes late, I heard from him. I appreciate that. My time is of consequence and he was extremely mindful of that. I told him what I wanted - a barn door style double door that would give the power line people a discreet way of getting to the pole and access for me to the equipment. Juda is a contractor and his workers put it together - it was wrong. The gate was not a barn door - it was two parallel swinging gates that blocked access to the equipment and gave the phone people an opportunity to trample the equipment. When Juda came and looked at the job, he agreed - this was not what had been promised. A whole day of workers and supplies had been used - he ate it. 100% -- agreed to do the job as promised, said he would not conclude until I was 100% satisfied. I am now 100% satisfied. Truly satisfied - EXACTLY what I wanted satisfied, including a canopy over the equipment that catches the gunk from the trees above which are great for landscape but not so great for equipment. This is to the go-to guy for these projects; he says there are no projects he won't take on; you should take him up on this. And one last thing: when all things are equal (and they never are), pick the business that has your candidate's name on it: they have a lot of pride in what their name goes on. read more
