Went to see Stranger Things tonight, ordered a bunch of food and we were told it could take 45min to an hour... not great but ok.. so we paid and were told the food would be brought to our seats. food never came. During the end credits they brought food to some of the people around us. Keep in mind this was a 2.5 hour feature. I asked about a refund on the way out and was told by the employees at the front (who were just standing around) that I would have to talk to concessions about getting a refund. The line at concessions was like 40 people deep, and the others walking away after trying to get refunds apparently were only given vouchers. This theater was mismanaged, disgustingly filthy, there were broken seats, and it looked like a ton of people aside from us paid for food that never came. Everyone tries to blame streaming services for movie theaters dying, but this was an eye opening evening that shows the real reason. I will never go to an AMC again in a world where Alamo Drafthouse is an option. Total trash. Don't waste your time or cash. read more

This has to be one of the worst AMC theaters. I bought five expensive tickets to the IMAX Laser Mario Galaxy movie that costed over $125. When we got there, the theater was still full of trash from previous showing. Nobody came to clean until I went downstairs to get some help. The team came up and apologized as they did not remember to get it ready (this was already 10pm when the show was at 10:15pm). They do a poor rush job to get the theater ready, and let ppl in. The "Club Rocker" seats were crammed and tight. It was very hot and humid the whole movie (I went out looking for some help but nobody was around). Don't waste your time or money at this theater. The theaters are always clean, no sticky floors. If you are using the delivery to seat, make sure you are there or they will miss you and not retry. That is good because they are busy. Be in your seat before the delivery time. It is a great service and I love it. The IMAX theater gives you great depth especially if you are sitting up top or in the middle. Audience was screaming at a movie that wasn't horror and it got to the point where my ears were ringing (the speakers are already at 100x volume) so I went up to an employee and asked her if she could tell them to be more quiet and she said yes, so I believed her but she never did anything. Another employee (I think a manager) went up and asked her what I said and she explained it, just for nobody to do anything. It was REALLY bad, she could have gone in there and told them to quiet down and if they didn't I would've just left (and try to get a refund obviously) but no, I sat through it believing someone was gonna try to help me out. It's been years that this place renovated and it does show it's age. The middle seats on each row are the worst in terms of seat comfort because of the heavy usage over the years. You can tell by the peeling on the headrest. Some seats have body odor still ruminating too. My recommendation is to start sitting off to the side. Not the best viewing angle, but at least you won't have to smell the previous persons lack of hygiene. I remember when they just renovated right before Covid and it was snazzy and nice. Amazing what 5 years did to the place. The WiFi is spotty and works about 50% of the time if you can log in. I usually just go with data, but some lower level rooms gets absolutely no service. The thing is that this place is probably the best option around. There's a Germantown theatre that needs renovation 15 years ago. AMC took over Montgomery Mall a year ago, but I haven't tried that. My niece and I visited this movie theater for the first time on Saturday to see Wonka. The movie theater is nice with recliner seats lots of space. While I liked the fact that I could order my food when I purchased my tickets and pick the time I wanted it to be delivered to my seat, I do think a way to tell the staff that you are running late needs to be integrated. I tried to the call the theater and no one answered and when the text to let me know my food was being delivered came through I still wasn't able to let anyone know I hadn't arrived yet. When I arrived, my food was not delivered and I couldn't tell anyone I was there so I had to go pick it up from the counter. Also, the bathroom was horrible. Water all over the sink, toilets not flushed, paper towels all over the floor. It was disgusting. I told the staff and not sure how long it took them to clean it up. Food was great! Went to this theatre on a Sunday August 10th to see Weapons. I had ordered my food and tickets off the app and the food would be placed at your seat at 6pm. The time the movie started and, on the app, said if you're not at your seat at 6pm they will bring it out again. So, we got to our seats a little after 6 the ticket said come to the concession to pick up your food. I thought they was supposed to be bringing it to us. I gave the low rating because they didn't have the caramel and kettle mixed popcorn and no ginger ale soda. read more

I went to the Superman IMAX premiere which had the dine-in option. I paid preordered a large popcorn and large fruit drink (I can't remember the exact flavor) to arrive at my seat at 7:15 pm, about 15 minutes after the scheduled start of the movie. My order did not get to me until around 8:30pm. Over an hour late. The worst part was the server brought me an empty cup telling me that they ran out of the drink that I ordered. Instead of asking me for an alternative flavor and going to get it she gave me the popcorn, candy and empty cup and told me to go downstairs in the middle of the movie and get my own drink. Needless to say there was no chance to argue or complain as she basically dropped off the cup candy and popcorn and quickly disappeared. The food is not good, and there's been times where we've ordered it before we got to the theater and it's taken forever to come. Alright, if you don't have the movie perk thing. Buy your tickets here at the kiosk, because if you do it online they tackle a "convenience fee" . $4 ... I dont have the perks, I seldom go to AMC theaters. However I wanted to see Sonic, and I was free. The employees are very courteous and professional. The concessions stand, expensive. The popcorn... is not as good as other movie theaters. It very dry and they use some cheap butter concoction because my stomach hurts now. Drinks are expensive but they will give you water cups for sodas they have those red Coca-Cola machines where you can choose from 100s of choices. The wifi is bad inside. As for the theater, the seats are very cushiony they don't recline and no leg rest. I was happy that the theater was clean but bring wipes to wipe down your table thingy. Bathrooms were clean. Awesome staff. Some of the best AMC folks around. I've spoken with super responsive managers and ticket takers who know their jobs inside out. Eighteen screens give the movie goers lots of options for indie and foreign films. Cons: at least twice, I've experienced problems with cold temperatures in theaters. (Of course, you can get a refund if you don't stay, but it's a hassle to cancel movie plans for something that the movie theater should be doing more smoothly.) At least twice, I've gotten a closed captioning device (so that I could understand the dialogue on a movie) but due to some equipment malfunction, the closed captioning function did not work. The actual personal device at the seat worked fine, but the equipment sending the signal to the personal device was malfunctioning. It would be really nice to see the theater get this working smoothly every time. read more

Went to see an imax movie and the temperature in the theater was probably around 40 degrees. Luckily I had my big parka. I wore the parka with my hood and gloves the entire 2:40 min movie, and during 45 min of adds and previews. If I didn't spend so much money on the movie I would have left! read more

I've been coming to this AMC Rio movie theater ever since I've been a kid. This theater used to look completely different and had since been renovated. I can gladly say I have able to experience both theaters. This AMC is a "dine in" theater so they have more food than just popcorn and nachos, for example burgers and fries. All the theaters also now have the reclining seats which is great. One of my gripes I would say is that the IMAX theater does not have recline seats, which is weird because if you are watching a movie in IMAX you are paying a premium. But other than that I highly recommend this theater but I am a bit biased haha. read more

We went to see Sinners on Memorial Day Weekend. The theater was incredibly dirty. We saw the door open to the kitchen and cashier area and food was everywhere. The bathrooms were atrocious! It made us wonder who is managing the theater because it was a disaster. There was no ticket taker. We walked in without anyone asking to see our tickets. I don't want to see a movie there again and if I do I will not order food because of the state of the kitchen and I will absolutely not use the restroom in there. Horrible experience. read more

The seats and service here is always excellent. When godzilla minus one has issues they were quick to rectify the problem with no questions. Sole issue would be the films that aren't wide releases are in the extremely small theater rooms which Aren't much larger than my own theater room. AC was not working in a theater packed with kids for Despicable Me 4 on Fourth of July. Ruined my 4 year old's first movie theatre experience. We left after 25 minutes of sweltering after staff said the AC had been turned on but there was no noticeable difference in temp. Unbearable and my kid was beet red when we walked out. The movie inexplicably started 15 minutes late, too - would have been nice if someone told us what was going on. Nobody came to check if the theater was cooling down. In reading other reviews, this seems to be a chronic issue. I'm giving two stars because our tickets were refunded. But even that took several follow-ups and about 4 weeks. read more

After not having been to this theater for awhile (I love about 30 miles away)--we have recently come here a few times. The variety of movies and showing times makes the selection better than some of the theaters that are near me. The amenities are also very good--wine that you can bring into the theater from the bar, the variety of popcorn flavors and the delivered-to-your-seat food options, make this a very fun theater to go to. Been here twice and I have to say it is the worst cinema I have been to. First time years ago I noticed the very odd layout and the closed captions did not work. The second time was this past fall when my wife and I decided to see the Taylor Eras Tour movie in IMAX 3D. The elevator was down so the staff had to help us through the back entrance. The IMAX theatre was unimpressive and very cramped with the most underwhelming clientele of all the 13 theatres and showings we saw this film. It certainly should not be allowed for dine in. They only let you order via the app or service counter and the app cuts off well before the movie. My caption device kept saying low battery so my wife went downstairs to get it swapped and order popcorn, soda, a milkshake, and some other hot snack food the two latter ones which were supposed to be delivered to our theater seat. This caused her to be late for the movie. Then our food never came. The new caption device had the same low battery error but didn't completely shut off like I expected it would. We came back from a refund on the food after the movie which they processed fast. Definitely don't recommend this cinema unless they do a complete redo. read more

Then after standing in the lobby for 15 minutes we finally got to go sit in our seats. They were covered in trash! The tables were soaked in who knows what, and it got all over us. Took our friends daughter to see Paddington in Peru this Friday 2/21/25 afternoon 4:40 show...theater 15. We had never been there before. Every one of the three staff members we came in contact with, was super kind and polite. I told the ticketing lady we hadn't been there before...she kindly explained how the dine in worked, where to order our food and which direction for us to find our theater. The young man at the concession stand was so polite and kind...as well as the young man who delivered our food. Our burgers were honestly really good-better than Best Buns...the theater was clean as well as the ladies room. Please thank your young staff for their kindness, sincerity and help. We look forward to attending another movie there soon! read more

This was the absolute worst movie experience I've ever had. The theater was filthy. It looked and felt like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. We ordered dinner in advance to avoid the lines but our food was not delivered until I went out and checked on it - it was finally brought to our chairs cold and an hour late after I had missed several minutes of the movie. 5th movie theater in the AMC A-List era occurring on Wednesday, August 1, 2018. This is one of only two AMC's in Montgomery County. Prior to Covid, this ended up being my most common theater I would go to even though I lived near AMC Wheaton because it had more independent movies than other theaters in the area except for Hoffman 22 in Alexandria, VA (the largest AMC in all of Maryland, Virginia, or DC). Granted, AMC Wheaton was a close 2nd most common. When I first went to Rio in August 2018, the seats were uncomfortable seats from the prior theater that was there before AMC. But not long after, they upgraded all the theaters, which was good. Unfortunately, they did away with the 2nd floor entrance. So, everyone is forced to go to 1st floor even if coming from the 2nd floor south parking garage. So, the front area is often crowded. Additionally, some of the staff has been unfriendly, but some are nice. The concession stand is slow & often a chaotic mess. They do have the option of better dining options like burgers, chicken tenders, wings, flatbread pizza, etc. I rarely have done this, but there were a few times when I had some credit to use and paid less or even just their $1 delivery fee to get the food to your seat. I think that $1 delivery is a forced option. I think I once asked about that and saying I had time to wait, but they had told me they only did the delivery option. Another time in May 2019, I was late to the beginning of Aladdin because I had an issue with the deal I was trying to get and the staff seemed dumbfounded. If you don't have any credit, as expected the food is a ripoff. Burgers are like $16 for a burger (granted you can get some random stuff on the burger, but I generally don't want too much on the burger anyway) & small amount of fries. The burger has a weird flavor, but it's decent. The chicken tenders are good, but I get the kid's chicken tenders which is 3 instead of 5 and fries on both, but about $10 instead of like $16 for the adult size. The tenders are pretty tasty. I was disappointed in August 2021 when I was there for a 9:30 PM movie, and they were out of several items including the kids chicken tenders I wanted. I ended up trying the flatbread pizza, which was surprisingly good, but not worth $14...granted I had credit built. I think it's good they have the option, but I would almost always choose some other food option in Rio or elsewhere. I think it's overpriced, and the other thing I realized I don't like when I tried the flatbread in August was the I don't like eating dinner in the dark. Additionally, they have a bar with overpriced drinks. I did that two or three times with my ex g/f. The drinks are good, but they aren't $15 or so caliber. As for the theaters, the reclining seats are comfortable, and I do like Rio has some independent or foreign movies you can't find at Wheaton 9 or even Columbia 14. Interesting Side Note: The friend who got me join A-List in June 2018 had gone 93 consecutive weeks getting his 3 movies in every week! The only thing that would stop would be a worldwide pandemic. On Friday, March 13, 2020, he worked early & went for a TRIPLE feature that evening knowing the theaters would all shutdown any day. I joined him for two for a double feature, and my g/f joined him & I for the last movie we saw. Masks: Montgomery County in general is the most uptight county in Maryland on mask policies. On Friday, October 29, 2021, the county had dropped the mask mandate. I went here on Saturday, 10/30 no mask (I always have in my pocket just in case), the women didn't say anything. I went to Rio exactly one week later on Saturday, 11/6, and the same women asked if I had a mask. I said I did and then started to walk off, and she yelled put your mask on. I did just to appease her. But it was ridiculous because even uptight MoCo dropped the mask policy, and she didn't say anything exactly a week earlier. And besides the cloth masks are basically useless, and the N95 is the only mask that really works, which I just got before Christmas and started wearing regularly when I go in. Conclusions: Overall, Rio has some good things going for it but has some issues as well. read more

The reclining seats are comfortable and an enjoyable place to sit for a movie. However, the lines for food were long and they weren't many staff working. The wait for food after ordering it was about an hour, so we ended up just getting popcorn instead of some of the actual food that they make. A lot of it sounded good, but we didn't want to leave part of the way through the movie to get it once it was ready. I had heard that there was a way to order food online, but there wasn't cell service or a strong wifi connection for us to try it out. read more
