Went to see a documentary about Glen Echo Park, which is not far from the theater. Beautiful inside, comfy seating. Showing interesting movies not available at the regular theaters. Parking not a problem on street. Restaurants nearby. Glad to support the little guys!

DISCLAIMER: This review is not about watching a movie. On a couple of occasions, I've popped in here to grab some popcorn while on a stroll in the neighborhood. Each time I come in, the staff is so kind. One of them occasionally sits outside in the tables and will kindly greet individuals going through the neighborhood. Because of my great experience with the staff, I'm inspired to catch a film here and continue supporting the business...with popcorn of course.

Avalon theater is our neighborhood movie theater. It is an independently run Place, one of a kind. They tend to show independent and interesting films, foreign films. Sometimes you'll get a box office experience. Everyone there is very sweet and we love to support this community endeavor. The seats are not necessarily as comfortable as you will find another theaters but it's a small price to pay to support independent ownership of media.

    LOST ILLUSIONS INDEED!

Tonight will be my last visit. I have been a patron of the Avalon for over twenty years. However, I have had two very unfortunate circumstances at during the course of my last four visits. I have been going at least twice a month since the pandemic eased and life returned to a little more normalcy and in view of their policy to have vaccination certification, and mask wearing and kept seating spaced. The two I will address come down to one staff member. An African-American man who tends the concessions and is always there at evenings for the 8 pm show which is when I attend. The first incident was my asking for his assistance in having my seats changed to something closer due to my vision, and having left my glasses at home. He was entirely uninterested in helping me. And pantomimed looking at his screen (you can purchase tickets at the concessions at the Avalon) and in an instant - and obviously making zero effort to assist me - he said there were no open seats. Once the show began, I saw two rows that were completely empty five rows from the screen where I needed to be, and simply moved. When I next returned, I advised him of the fact, and said it was a shame he didn't make a more honest effort to help me. He didn't take that well, though I my intention was that he should be honest next time. Tonight, I came in to see LOST ILLUSIONS, and there he was. It was 7:30 and ample time before show. I asked if he might please pop some fresh popcorn as it was obvious that what was in the machine at the bottom was the leftovers that had sat there for awhile and at 8.00 a bag, I don't think it an unreasonable request. He recognized me from the evening I mentioned his refusal to accommodate my need of a closer seat, and he became confrontational and belligerent immediately telling me he would not pop fresh corn for me. My partner (we have made it a bi-monthly ritual now to go to the Avalon and support it) said he would take what they have. And I said I didn't want anything. Sure enough, it was cold, and tasted old. Popcorn, we all know, is only good for at best an hour. He gave me his credit card and said to go back a half hour later before the show and get fresh. Five minutes before showtime, I return and there was barely a kernel left in the bin. I repeated the request, and the man became even more hostile. Insisting he would not make me fresh popcorn. By now there were many late arrivals coming through the door, as the show was about to begin. And I said, "I can wait. You will obviously run out with the people coming in, and you will have to make some more." At that point he began shouting across two customers speaking to another concessions staff member, trying to get his manager's attention. I stepped out into the lobby to address the manager who was busy taking tickets to the new arrivals. And the man kept jutting his head out to see if I was still there. FInally, he had the audacity to come out to the lobby and threatened me verbally, "You better watch out! You don't know what you're gonna get! You don't know who your messin' with!" Well I did, and do. What I was dealing with was unacceptable. Brutish. Rude. And threatening on top of that? What I was dealing with was completely unacceptable coming from a person whose JOB It is to please the customer, and make sure they have a lovely evening at the theater, and feel valued. Instead, this man twice has acted in a very nasty, and wholly unprofessional manner. And today, took it to thuggish, intimidating street level. And I will never again attend the Avalon. There is always E-Street Cinema with lovely art house films, or the Criterion Channel at home with their globally recognized art house films I can enjoy in the safety and comfort of my home on a huge 4K screen, and pop my own fresh popcorn and not be physically intimidated or challenged or treated like garbage by someone - as I told him tonight - who has no business being on the front of the house of ANY civilized establishment, let alone an elegant, refined theatre offering world class cinema to its patrons. He is jarringly out of place, and is one more example of the civic deterioration in this country that keeps people home. Why spend 25.00 on tickets and another 25.00 on concessions for two people when I can comfortably enjoy a peaceful cinematic experience at home without having to encounter such boorish, and unacceptable abuse from a theater employee? I have two passes that were given me and I will give them away. I don't need to go out and spend my money to be so savagely abused and intimidated as reward for my patronage. The management here needs to find someone better trained in customer hospitality, professionalism, behavioral decorum. This is simply both unforgivable, and unacceptable. Me and my friends will just go to E-Street CInema, the Drafthouse, the Angelika Film Center, Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse...all places I have been to and never experienced this kind of trashy behavior.

Avalon Theatre is an art-house cinema in Chevy Chase (15 minutes by foot from Friendship Heights metro on the red line). It has a sense of grandeur. No luxurious reclining leather seats (like the AMC), but the old-school charm is a plus (look at all the wood paneling). There is a recessed painted ceiling near the main screen, for example. There is a cafe (which also sells popcorn). It appears to be a spot where the locals hangout. Great staff and great people. They do show films such as Beauty and the Beast. If we lived near the theatre we would go more often. The Cinema Club is based here too. They show 7 films per season.

"We just want to show the films we like. The ultimate goal is to show as wide a swath of movies as…read morepossible: good, bad, new, old, weird -- whatever." I read that quote from one of the founders of Suns Cinema in a piece about the theater, and it pretty much sums up why I'm writing a five-star review for this 28-seat movie theater. I've loved movies since I was young, and seeing a movie in a theater is as special to me now as it was when I was a budding cinephile growing up in Dallas, a city with a surprisingly great independent movie theater scene. But in our post-pandemic, streaming world, movie theaters are struggling and we're losing some. But there are some positive signs, too: new theaters opening, historic theaters getting bought and protected. Suns Cinema was founded by two movie lovers with the help of crowdfunding. And they turned what had been a cellphone store into one of the coolest little cinemas in the country. They show whatever they want - foreign films, classics, the weirdest little surprises you'd never find on your own... Take for instance what's "Coming Soon" this month - a movie made in 1958 and a movie released this year; and movies directed by William Friedkin, Agnès Varda, Andrei Tarkovsky, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Alain Resnais... They show about 30 movies a month, and many sell out quickly due to the small number of seats/tickets available. When you arrive, you're carded and asked for your ticket at the door. Then, on the left downstairs, is a bar with a few snacks (popcorn, candy, olives) and some great drinks: well-crafted cocktails, a great wine list, beers, sodas, etc. Then up a steep flight of stairs is the screening room. It's tiny, with sets of mismatched movie theater seats and chairs and a screen as large as it can be in this little screening room. I had wanted to visit Suns Cinema for years, and this past weekend, it finally happened. A friend and I got tickets for the 6pm showing of Eyes Without a Face (which I had seen once 20 years ago and my friend had never heard of - I didn't let her Google it before the screening) on Saturday night. We showed up a bit early, grabbed snacks and a great glass of wine. You can hover in their bar (there are tables and barstools), but we decided to head upstairs to pick our seats. I'm not tall (I say five foot one but that might be a bit generous), so I'm always worried about having poor visibility in little theaters like Suns. We went to the front row, and this worked fine. (We played a game of Goldilocks when we walked in and tried a few seats and positions out, because each section of seats offers a different style of seat and view - if you get there early, you can Goldilocks it from the 28-seat selection, too). Sure, you can hear a bit of noise from the bar downstairs during the screening. And yes, they added an intermission to our 90-minute movie that wasn't designed to have one (I know my cinephile brother would fume about this), but seeing a movie at Suns reminded me of why I have always loved and still love going to the movies. It was amazing to hear the reactions our small audience had to our strange, shocking little movie. There were gasps and giggles and post-movie debate. Suns offers something no other theater in DC does (and that people in other cities may not be lucky enough to have). It creates a community for people who love or are interested in film. A place to see rare movies, strange movies, old movies, challenging movies. A place to see with people who want to share those movies and the experience of being in a cinema. If I lived in DC, I'd be here often. Living in Baltimore (a city that doesn't have anything close), I'll definitely be back. DC is lucky to have Suns Cinema.

I love going to the movies and, in particular, I love supporting independent movie houses. Suns has…read morebeen open for years, but I hadn't gotten around to being a patron until last week. First off, allow me to say just how lovely and responsive the theater staff was. The screening I wanted a ticket for had sold out online, but after some brief back and forth on Instagram, they suggested I arrive anyway as sometimes there are no shows -- it was my lucky night. It's definitely a small theater and it doesn't have any of the amenities you'd expect at a multiplex, but what it lacks in corporate comfort it makes up for with charm. It's clear this place is run by people who *love* the act of moviegoing as every nook and cranny of Suns has some kind of reference or homage to old school movie theaters or classic film. The bar downstairs has some cocktails, but I kept it simple with a $5 Miller High Life and Haribo gummies. The popcorn they have on sale is one size only which was fine for the price. Definitely most of the focus is on the beer and spirits which, like the Alamo, you can take with you to the screening room upstairs. The screening room holds maybe 25 people or so and definitely has more of a home theater vibe, but it makes for a really intimate gathering and atmosphere. Definitely a hipster hangout. That said, most of the movies they advertise here are older ones (like Scream 3 which I watched as part of their Parker Posey monthlong retrospective). I will definitely be coming back.

This is just some of the cons associated with the area. Secondly, be prepared to trek some fairly steep stairs, that I suspect may not be even in height cause I noticed several people (including myself) trip on the last 1-2 steps at the top of the stairs. However, I believe there is an elevator or another entrance that is accessible without stairs (don't quote me though), but not readily known. The space is cute and a lot more spacious than it appears. However, it's not the place to hang out, due to not much seating available, and the air was not well circulated and stuffy, with the weather outside and amount of people passing through. And one of my favorites photographers was being featured at this Center, and the set up and lighting were very impressive. Overall, I highly recommend!

All were improv led by a talented cast of actors who clearly enjoyed their job which made the whole experience memorable. They did comedy shows every hour for 3 hours on the Wednesday we went. We were able to get a ticket for one show for $10 and for an additional $5 upgrade it to a "night pass" which got us access to all of their shows for the evening. For a late night activity the value and difference in offerings were amazing and well worth it. They also have beverages and small snacks for sale to enjoy during the shows. Only note is you do have to walk up a steep set of stairs to enter the building, you also have to walk down into the black box theater where the show takes place. The seats are comfortable but a tad bit narrow. It was unclear if they have a more accessible option to watch the show in person, they did record so that may be an option. Just something to keep in mind if you have mobility concerns.
