Deciding to do a last minute trip to Galena, my boyfriend discovered Abbey's. considering we were…read morebooking the room say day, they were very nice. we arrived around 10:30 pm, and were greeted promptly by kat. she showed us around and then took us to our room. told us breakfast was at 9, and showed us how to get back in when we would leave. we were then introduced to her husband, and we set off into the night for some fun. the room itself was nice in a quaint way. there was a jacuzzi tub in the corner, a 4 post bed, fireplace, desk, and tv. the bathroom was a bit small, and the water-pressure a bit lacking, but it was cute place. probably the biggest downside for us was how loud the bed was! you would sit down and it would creak like it was going to break. i was definitely woken up a few times by my boyfriend rolling over in the middle of the night. breakfast itself was good. there were a few things we didn't care for on the menu, but nothing to complain about overall. the barely saw the owners, which works well for me. i don't want to feel like i'm at my parents house and be checked in on all the time. nice place to stay. i would recommend coming here if you stay in galena. the gardens here a gorgeous and the view is wonderful.

We stayed in the Station House, a beautifully decorated, private, and peaceful cottage with everything we needed for a relaxing getaway. The food was exceptional from start to finish. Our first evening, we enjoyed a private dinner outdoors by the fire pit, listening to the soothing sounds of the babbling brook. The second night featured an unforgettable seven-course candlelit dinner in the main house. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. Each morning, a generous breakfast was delivered to our cottage. You definitely won't leave hungry, and you'll be hard-pressed to find a better dining experience anywhere else. Throughout our stay, our host, Michael, was energetic, kind, and welcoming. As both host and chef, he made every part of our visit feel personal and special. We entered our cottage and were immediately greeted with a musty smell masked by recent spraying of potpourri. I immediately contacted our host, Michael, and he informed me that was from the previous guest and would dissipate. It was so bad that we couldn't be in the room and were relegated to our screened porch. The furniture on the porch had cushions that were black from mold. We requested dinner in our cabin and were told it would arrive around 7:30. We asked for it earlier and while they "tried to accomodate" the first courses arrived actually late at 8pm. We were told that the next courses would arrive 45 minutes later and didn't come until after 9pm. Meanwhile when we went to shower we discovered there was no hot water. After further investigation, by Michael, he informed us at about 10pm that there was 3 feet of water in the basement! Well that explains the musty smell and no hot water. At that time he did offer us another cottage, however we had decided to leave first thing in the morning. In the meantime the owner, Bill, is pleading with us to stay, but it was too late our mind was made up the anniversary trip was ruined. Bill offered, very kindly, to only charge us what we thought it was worth if we stayed. After leaving, however first thing in the morning he charged my card for the full 2 night stay and has not responded to any of my requests to reverse the charges. The sad thing is this could all be avoided had they not tried to mask over the smell from the beginning. One can only imagine the black mold growing in that basement!

The staff at the hotel desk nor the pub were very friendly. It was obvious they did not really want to be there. When we got to the room, I noticed that not one thing in the room had been updated since we were married. The couch was broken in to say the least. The shower temperature could not be adjusted, and one of the towel racks just fell off the wall when I touched it. The worse thing about our experience was the next morning my wife noticed several bed bug bites on her arm. She spent the rest of our trip smearing Benadryl on her arm. My suggestion to anyone looking for a room in the area... try the DeSoto house.

As noted on the website, the rooms are on the second floor and the stairs are steep -- no elevator. So just be prepared. It's an old building, so there are some creaks and groans when you walk the hall or rooms, but it is so quaint! The antique furniture is lovely. The beds are very comfortable. The bathroom is roomy and the water pressure worked well (always a plus for my husband). The HUGE cinnamon roll awaiting us when we arrived was wonderful!!! And we thought the price per night was affordable (under $200). Being at the end of Main St makes it more quiet than uptown further. Just an enjoyable place to stay.

Marie had called us in the early afternoon to confirm details of our arrival, and everything was straightforward and hassle-free. Our 9:00 family-style breakfast in the morning was just wonderful! (I know I sound like I'm glowing, but it's only because we were just constantly pleased!) The fruit, French toast, and sausage were all fresh (and plentiful), and the freshly whipped cream was a happy asset for both toast and coffee. He gave us a little history of the house and was kind enough to give us recommendations of where to dine in Galena. The breakfast he served was so yummy! I definitely was a member of the Clean Plate Club. The 24 hour refreshment hutch and fridge on the guest floor is great. And the fresh cookies were a treat! I was pleased that each room had a separate sitting room and it's own bathroom/ shower. We went in the fall/summer so we didn't get a chance to enjoy the bedroom fireplace but it looked so nice! The owner (who took it over in April from his parents) was very friendly and helpful- not overbearing at all! Breakfast was good- we were able to pick between a couple options when he asked us upon checkin. Coffee was good & several juices on the table. On the bedroom level here was a mini fridge, coffee machine, and water machine for use. Also the bedrooms are more separate and since there are only 3guest rooms it was a nice private feel. The only two negatives that I found was I wished they had a surge protector next to the bed because I had to unplug the clock/radio since I prefer to keep my cell phone on the nightstand charging while I sleep (my husband had an extra outlet on his side to use); the other part is they put a lot of effort decorating... There was lots of vases and stuffed teddy bears on the ground which upon leaving I could not simply scan the floor that nothing was left. However the Best part of this place was the location! Excellent perfect location! We were able to walk to everything! When we drove to Iowa (15mins away) we passed a lot of b&b that were not so close which made us really appreciate this place!! And the price was reasonable!
