The Squiers Manor is an experience. No detail left undone. The proprietors are masters in their field...from the abundance of period pieces furnishing the Manor, to the home-cooked meals, down to the complimentary toiletries; including eye makeup remover wipes. It's in the fine details like these that the love of hospitality shows. Thank you Nathan and Rud.

Recently, I needed to be in Maquoketa, Iowa, for a wedding, and I was glad to learn of the highly reviewed Squiers Manor B&B. With short notice I was able to make a reservation in the Beulah Room, named after one of the Squiers daughter's who grew up and was married in the house, whose father the house was built for. It was a lovely room with a twin bed for our 9 year old daughter, and at a most reasonable price too. The furnishings in our room and all the others we were able to see, were stunning. This may have been the finest B&B I have ever stayed in anywhere in the US and Canada. But not only was the building grand, and furnishings fantastic (Kathy and her husband are antique dealers and have searched high and low for the most amazing furnishings for their B&B), the hospitality was grand too. Kathy accommodated our need to check in a bit before standard check in between 4-8pm, and kindly greeted us and gave us a full tour of the house. If we have any disappointment at all, it was that we could not stay longer, enjoy the evening dessert or partake of the morning breakfast. We have heard it is great. We can't wait to get back to Maquoketa again and visit Squiers Manor again, and we would tell you to make a reservation here if you are passing through or staying for a few days in the area, it is a MAGNIFICENT B&B.

The cottage was once a summer kitchen, and sits a stone's throw from the main house. Both buildings are of the same stonework style that Mineral Point is famous for. The cottage sports two bedrooms, a family room, and a small bath. The plumbing is all modern, with great water temp and pressure, as well as central air conditioning. There is a microwave, a small fridge, and a coffee machine. Several interesting books and knick-knacks line the shelves, and the main bedroom has a cute little shelf of chocolates. Out back is a little garden and beyond that is the Cabin at Cothren. Both have exclusive parking with direct access to the road. The reservation process was great. We booked online, then the owner (who is very pleasant and sociable) contacted us to arrange payment. She processed our credit card through Paypal. A very easy transaction. Our only comment is that we would have liked to have had a little history of this particular property in a printed form, but I'm certain our hostess would have been more than happy to tell us if we had asked. (I later discovered that there is some historical info on their website.) It should be noted that the whole town rolls up their sidewalks pretty early, so plan ahead if you want to eat out locally. Also, note that although Yelp lists this as a bed and breakfast, it is not.

Breakfast was great, as were the home baked treats that could be found throughout the day. The bad: there was only wine and soda in the fridge. No ice and no water. The common areas were cluttered. I don't care to stay someplace and see piles of junk on the floor. I stepped into the kitchen at one point to look for some ice for my tea and the cleanliness of the kitchen was very questionable. Food had been left out of the fridge on the counter, and it was the middle of the day. Against my better judgement I DID have breakfast the next day and I haven't gotten sick, so there IS that! The ugly: I am very sensitive to smells and there was a heavy presence of cat urine. I just couldn't escape it. i never saw a cat, but I sure did smell it! The curtains in our room were falling apart and they were all water stained. I could look past all of that, but when I discovered what the pillows looked like I was done and we left a day early. The pillows were not encased in a protective cover before they were placed in a pillowcase and they were all stained and disgusting, one even had a hole in it. Even that didn't phase me too much, but when I helped myself to a pillow case that I found in the hall closet it looked like there was a booger on it and I just lost it. We were not given any kind of hassle when we checked out early and it would be my guess that we were not the first. As others have mentioned the outside looked like something out of a horror movie, but I obviously wasn't put off by it as we did check in. According to past reviews the renovation of the front porch has been going on for YEARS, and it looks pretty trashy. If you don't mind all that I mentioned, by all means stay, but I will not stay again. If you can get past the cat smell and the disgusting pillows and the dirty kitchen, it IS a beautiful B&B. I need to note that it took me a long time to write this review. It really IS beautiful, and the owners really are lovely people, but I just couldn't not say something. Had everyone else that has written reviews been totally honest, I probably would not have stayed there. This place could be SO much better with a little more care.

Lovely ambiance of jazz always playing seems comforting in so many ways. The hostess ate breakfast with me and helped me with photos, directions, advise. She was sincerely lovely. They went out of their way to help me in my travels. Epic hosts, food, complimentary drinks. I have never been to a place this unique. Usually you worry about small things at hotels bc they are so sterile. Here its like staying at your grandparents house or favorite aunt and uncles. I suggest this location to people who love the wholesome things in life without the upper scale crust lingering on your permanent white pillowcases. You don't need to worry about that here. (I would not suggest this to people with serious allergies or extreme standards.) Everything felt comfortable and relaxing. I love it! And I will continue to come back. Best bed and breakfast! Just epic! Perfectly cooked, the best crapes I have ever had. This peach layered cake they made... I can't stop thinking about! You gotta check it out!

The house is beautifully decorated, the bathrooms clean! And our bedroom (The King) was so comfortable! We enjoyed the views of the Mississippi River from our bedroom and spent a good many hours relaxing in the den reading and enjoying the pure silence! Although Sharon has many TVs in the house, the comfort and serenity was a welcomed time.. just what we wanted for a nice respite from our usual routine! We awoke this morning to the delicious smells rising from the kitchen below: bacon frying and coffee brewing!! It was a great way to wake up!! And there was freshly made fruit parfait, home made French toast with hot maple syrup! A mountain of bacon, orange juice, ice water and enough coffee to jump start me! The coffee was so delicious and the entire breakfast was so nice and enjoyable eating at the dining room table - the the views of the mighty Mississippi River flowing outside the front window!! Yes, it is winter and no we could sit outside to enjoy the views of the flowing river and souring Bald Eagles... but The Castle B&B in Sebula, IA was a real special treat to enjoy! It was unbelievably reasonable and was comparably priced or less than the chain motels in the area. The interior of the place was beautiful and the owner/hostess, Sharon, was a very warm and welcoming lady. I felt as if I had known her all of my life after the first few minutes we were there. When she said she could cook breakfast, she was not giving herself enough credit. Breakfast was at the top of the list followed by the extremely comfortable bed and view which tied for second place and the ginormous zinc bathtub - a truly luxurious bubble-bath experience. For breakfast, in addition to cakes and waffles, we had bacon, sausage, OJ, coffee and an amazing fruit parfait. There is a lot of great history to the building, you are just going to have to visit to find out more. The Iron Horse bike rally/concert events are very close as are some great bars, restaurants, antique stores, and outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, motorcycling, scenery, boating, and fishing. And if you like to gamble, there are some casinos just down the road. Go visit Sharon. I am sure you will have as great of a time as we did. and for all you gravelheads out there, the Castle is biker friendly!
