My daughter and I just got back from a wonderful 3 day 2 nite stay. The suite was just beautiful -- filled with history and ambiance. The staff and owner are exceptionally hospitable. The receptionist, I believe her name was Amanda was very sweet and helpful. I highly recommend staying at this "hallmark" hotel. read more

Now known as Hotel Galena and Riverboat Suites is such a top quality hotel. Nate, the owner, recently took over and renovated the rooms during the spring of 2023. He is such a great host and his continental breakfast is more of a full hot breakfast. He even bakes muffins for the breakfast and they were delicious. My fiancé and I stayed in suite #9 and it was the perfect getaway for us. Everything is clean and up to date while keeping the charm of Galena. Rodrigo the house keeper/maintenance person is very kind, helpful and just overall a great guy. He helped us stay comfortable throughout our stay and made sure we had everything we needed. I highly recommend this place if you're planning to stay in Galena. It's a minute walk to the downtown area/Main St read more

What a gem of a hotel and even better owner/host. Let's talk about Nate first. This one night visit was my first "day off" in a long time, and I was wanting to scout ahead and find if Galena would be worth packing up my family of six up for an adventure. Despite my experience in travel, I messed up and had booked the wrong day (exactly 1 week earlier). Nate not only quickly and kindly determined that an error had occurred, but without batting an eye found me a room and ... didn't charge, not even a change of booking or administrative fee. He took what would have been a highly disappointing and highly stressful situation and made me feel at home in less than 3 minutes. The hotel itself is in two three story brick buildings built in the 1950s, but the room was clean, and Nate has made updates so that infrastructure such as heating/cooling is smart, technology driven (even though it is a central common system) to permit independent control to the spaces -- under reasonable limitations of a 170 year old building. The bed and space was comfortable. Nate takes pride in providing an exceptional service, even showing off a suite that is nearly finished and available for booking -- two sided fireplace and jacuzzi/whirlpool two person tub. I would come back in a heartbeat...and will get my reservation right the next time! read more

After booking my nonrefundable room, I got a text that the hotel has no elevator and that our bathroom is across the hall from our room. The owner was smug and seemed very happy to not have to help us up the stairs to the third floor when I told him we could carry our own luggage. Some may appreciate the "quaint charm" of an older building like this, but my mom and I found it to be very rundown, uncomfortable, and inconvenient. We had assumed that the bathroom was across a private hall, but it was a shared hallway with two other rooms. The bed was small and barely fit in the room. We sat on it and quickly said that we would both have rolled right out of it if we stayed there. Nate also told us that if we wanted to change the temperature in the room (and the whole floor), we would have to text him so he could change it from his phone. Additionally, the hotel is described as being "downtown Galena" but it is a 15-minute walk to downtown. My mom and I quickly left and booked a room at the Wyndham five minutes away for 2/3 the cost of the Hotel Galena. The staff at the Wyndham were all friendly and professional and the hotel was beautiful and clean with a bar, spa, gaming room, and pool. I would not recommend Hotel Galena to anyone. I have to believe that the many 4-5 star reviews were written by Nate or his friends. Here is a picture of my 70 year-old mom leaving the hotel 10 minutes after we checked in. This hotel is now known as Hotel Galena. I think this is the old page for the older business, so if you see this review, check out the new Hotel Galena. My fiancee and I were planning a trip to Galena. We didn't want to do the traditional hotel, and the B&B experience wasn't for us. Luckily we found Hotel Galena. The room itself was beautiful. Very clean and updated. Didn't feel like I was in a house built in the 1800s. There was a nice big whirlpool tub which was very cool! If we didn't spend most of our time downtown, which was just a 5 minute walk away, we would have very happily spent that time in the room. Nate, the owner, was a great host. Very helpful and informative about what to do in Galena. We accidentally broke something in the room, and Nate didn't get mad about it at all. He simply laughed it off and promptly fixed it for us. That was great! This was our first time in Galena, and if we do come back, there is a good chance we will be back to Hotel Galena! read more

Service from beginning to end was great!! Nate, the owner, is very hands on and very informative. This location is very conveniently located on Main Street and very charming. My boyfriend and I stayed here with another couple last weekend and were very happy with our experience. The staff was kind and attentive. One of the owners made fresh pastries and bread every morning and it was delicious! There was also fresh fruit, yogurts, breakfast sandwiches, coffee and more. It was so nice enjoying our pumpkin bread and coffee on the quaint cobblestone patio. The room was cute, decorated nicely, and clean. The bed was a little soft but overall we slept well. There was a huge two person tub in the bathroom with Jets and the water pressure in the shower was excellent. If you see notebooks on your dresser, pop them open - they're full of guest notes dating as far back as 1992! Really cool to sift through. The hotel was decorated for Halloween and we couldn't love it more. Galena is a unique travel experience (especially in the fall) and staying in this older brick inn with flickering lights and spooky decorations was so cozy. Check out the hot tub outside. It's located off the patio and can easily sit 6 people. Bring a bottle of wine or beer from one of the wineries/breweries and some music and you're set for an outstanding night cap. Cannot recommend this place enough. We will be back! read more

Very charming hotel. Only stayed for one night but staff was very friendly and welcoming. Gave many great tips for places to eat, things to do. Very easy to walk to Main Street from hotel and did not have to worry about finding parking. Only about a 5 minute walk until you get to the first shops on Main Street. We came in for one night and will definitely be back in the future. As soon as we met the owner, it was evident the amount of thought the has gone into this establishment. Lived the building, outside patio area, and the room was great. Felt more like a new apartment than a hotel room. Definitely recommend this hotel. Quick walk to downtown. read more

The building is for sale. They clearly don't care anymore. Pros: -Cute room with charming design* -Nice hot tub** -Fire place -walking distance to town Cons: -Worst mattress in a hotel I've ever ATTEMPTED to sleep on. Completely sagging in. Only the very edges had any support left. Complete with thin, old lumpy pillows. -musty sheets that bothered my allergies -so loud. Right on Route 20. Zero sound proofing through the windows. Our room actually shook and the light fixtures squeaked as trucks drove by at night - loud mini fridge with a buzzing compressor - A sign on the door that says they are not responsible for lost money, jewelry or personal items. Not acceptable. I took all valuables with me every time I left the room. My boyfriend's toiletry case disappeared but not the items from it still on the sink.... -water from the sink was slightly yellow and contained small rocks. Front desk would not provide bottled water. We bought a case at Walmart. -Knobs and switches! So many light switches and knobs. Some work. Some don't. Some dim. Some don't. Some don't seem to be connected to anything at all. It's just a hassle. -*Not well kept. Peeling wallpaper. -**limited hot water. Not enough to fill the bath tub any time of day. -You will be charged for another day if you leave after 11 am. No exceptions. - Breakfast consisted of weak coffee, stale danish, cheap cereal and boiled eggs. Basically, inedible. read more

My GF and I stayed at this place in the last week of September during a pleasant fall weekend. We stayed in the "Africa Suite" which was a suite modeled with an african theme. It had photos of big cats, African artwork and design throughout the room.. It was the most expensive room at this place, but I feel like it was worth it. The suite itself, consists of a living room, large jucuzzi room and bedroom. The room is much larger than i anticipated and the photos on the website do it no justice.The location is literally up the street from downtown Galena and very close to the restaurants, watering holes and other attractions of this city. I would def recommend visiting the winery located just outside of town. It has a great view, complete vineyard and a large assortment of great tasting wines. read more

Me and my girl friend stayed here on a very short notice, in less than 24 hours we were there and they keys were waiting for us. Once inside the room, we had the War Eagle which included a fireplace and hot tub, the room was great. Exactly what they had pictured on the website, but bigger than I would of thought. They have a number of different rooms available and although you can hear whats going on outside in the hall, we were very happy with our experience. The one thing we did not to the manager on checkout was that the room we had stayed in was very hot, even without the fireplace on, we ended up closing the vents, covering them with pillows and going as far as opening the window when it was less than 25 degrees outside. She had mentioned they recently replaced the furnace, so I hope they can get this fixed, I would like to stay there again. read more

We come here every year and the stay is always amazing and close to the downtown area. Rooms are clean and well kept. Looks like the underground hot tub got a small remodel and looks great. The front desk lady Victoria was very friendly and even mailed me my $200 pair of ray bands I forgot back to me. Definitely a place to check out! read more

Stayed Memorial Day weekend 2017. Very cool place. We chose the Raphael room. Huge room and so worth the money. Just a 5 minute walk from DT Galena. The only downfall that gives it a 4 star..... street facing rooms hear all the traffic on the main street in and out if town. It does quiet down at bedtime but the windows do not cut down on noise. read more
