Let this be a cautionary tale for the rest of you folks! I loathe this place! Stick to a local Bed & Breakfast. Why? Read on...
First of all, this hotel has, well, a history and not the typical sort that one would expect. In 1879, the hotel building was originally a home for Protestant people who were suffering from incurable diseases. Each wing of the hotel looks just like a film set of a psychiatric ward, complete with the high ceilings, open spaces and constant double doors. It could be very cool but instead, it feels chilly and eerie.
On to the bad! There is absolutely NO way to adjust the temperature of your room and they like to keep these rooms HOT! How hot? Well, if you intended on hatching baby chicks, this would be the place to be! My wife and I couldn't believe the intensity of the room's heat. It was like a sauna! I promptly went downstairs to the front desk where the hotel's manager explained to me that all of the heaters are connected to one another. There is NO way to adjust the temperature without affecting every room on the floor. How is it possible that a hotel this costly and with a such a deep albeit odd history doesn't have a better management of temperature controls? It's totally unacceptable! Again, my wife and I were forced to open windows to vent out the heat. One of our windows opened onto the neighboring room's balcony. I couldn't believe it! Anyone on that floor could get into our room and vice versa. It should be taken into account that if they were smoking, it would float into our room. The neighbors were also very noisy on their balcony so that made it increasingly difficult to sleep at night. Unacceptable!
The water temperature flowing through the hotel's pipes were not only inconsistent but also DANGEROUS, especially for elderly and small children! About every 30 seconds or so, the temperature would suddenly change from mild to SCORCHING! There was no way to know exactly when the temperature change would occur and no way to avoid it once it had occurred. For any elderly individual or small child, this could spell disaster as they would be burned quite badly very quickly. This problem was brought to hotel staff upon checkout but they didn't appear too concerned of the matter.
On a side note, if you have any work to do, don't rely on the hotel's wifi. A 56K connection would surely be faster.
At 7 AM, crew of two men and a boom truck began their work on the hotel outside our room. at 715, I drew the curtain to find the basket and one of the crewmen staring right at me. Not very private if you ask me and I can't imagine any woman would like that sort of thing occurring outside her window. I've included a picture of this event, just after they crewmen began lowering their platform. The crewmen were also very loud, barking orders at each other around 6 AM as they were initially setting up for their work.
As my wife and I were leaving the hotel, the crewmen had the front and left side entrance sealed off with tape. Guests were routed to the right, DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH the crewmen working above. I went around the tape and looked up to see the crewmen spraying and painting the outside of the building with some sort of chemical. Whatever it was, they had put down a drop cloth over the sidewalk. If what they were working with was bad enough to keep off the pavement, why force guests to walk underneath them and risk the possibility of being splashed with their chemicals?
Our experience with this hotel was the low point of our adventures for the day. Folks, skip this place and look for a local Bed & Breakfast. Not only are they much nicer, quieter and better managed, but proceeds stay in the country, as opposed to global hotel chains. Keep it in Ireland. read more
