There's 10-12 various sized tables in the wine cellar. Tables have table cloths, and candles. A nice ambiance!

This is our 2nd visit to Amalthea. We've learned something new each time. On our first visit our wine tasting was with a certified wine sommelier. This visit was a family member serving our tastings. Both were knowledgeable about Amalthea wines. The sommelier, of course, added more to the experience with her extensive wine knowledge. Amalthea offers Estate wines, Green Dragon label wines made from California or Washington State imported grapes, and I believe there was at least one other label. There are several wine tasting options- white flight, red flight, sweet flight, two flights, or all three flights. Plus, there's a few surprises during the tasting! Rach pour is 1/2 ounce. I suggest purchasing crackers and a bottle of water to cleanse your palate between tastings. Tip: Try all the wines! You will be surprised by a wine or two you normally wouldn't drink. There's an inside space to enjoy a bottle of wine in the wine cellar barrel room. Tables are simply decorated with cloth tablecloths and a candle. Very nice ambiance. There are two large outdoor spaces. One on a patio with tables, and several tables around fire pits in the wooded area outside the main door. The winery and vineyard are off the beaten path and truly a wonderful surprise of old world Italian (and French, there's a Bordeaux) wines. If you allow it, it can transport you to another place and offer a break from the everyday! .

I've been going to Amalthea Cellars for a few years and, honestly, their red wines are exceptional--the best in New Jersey (in my opinion. If you're looking for a real treat, try to attend a VIP tasting which are held during the Wine Trail weekends (Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day and Mother's Day). You will get to meet the winemaker, Louis, and learn the ins-and-outs of wines he's crafting. The tasting room is quaint and there's some tables available in the barrel room if you wish to drink a glass or share a bottle of wine. There's no food service yet cheese and crackers are available for purchase. During warmer days, there are firepits outside as well as tables with umbrellas on the patio. I definitely think it's worth the trip!

Great little winery in the middle of nowhere! We stopped in for a refill of our Cantina Mas along with a new one as a gift ... but ended up staying for some tastings and a bottle of Europa V for our dinner! Everyone there is super nice. We had a great time trying the wine ... including some special ones that they said the owner graciously added in. It was too cold on the day we visited ... but there's plenty of outdoor seating on their patio when the weather is nice.

This was my second time visiting the winery and they did not disappoint. The wine tastings are personalized, educational, and very fun! Its a really great bang for your buck with tastings ranging from $6-$15 depending on the types of wines you're interested in. They advertise the tasting for around 5 different wines, but both times ive visited they've brought out more wines than listed. After finishing the tasting, we bought a bottle to share out in the courtyard over looking the vineyard. This winery has to be one of my favorites for both taste and ambiance. Its such a quiet relaxing area with a quaint country vibe. The workers are excellent in helping you understand the wine and also provide some snacks to purchase. Dont forget to purchase their signature seasonal pouch wine! The winter one was a very easy to drink semi dry red.

This five star review is mostly due to Carlos because he was amazing! My friend and I came here around 2 PM on a Saturday afternoon and we were the only ones in the wine tasting room. 3 wine tastings of red, white and semi sweet were only $15 a person which I felt was very reasonable. Carlos served us for about half the wine tasting and we loved him. He seemed so genuine and knowledgeable about all of the wines we tasted. He was also a great conversation starter. He really seemed like he loved his job and where he was which made us feel so welcome!

Nice winery with knowledgeable people! Came here with 2 friends on a Sunday. They close at 5PM. Ample parking and outdoor ample seating. You can bring your own food. They have tastings that get cheaper as you do more. I thought their Cabernets were especially good. I had the off dry tasting and the red tasting. We ended up getting a bottle of the Metis wine because my friend really liked sweet wines and it was the best compromise. The metis has a kick of spice at the end that makes it taste quite good. However, after a bottle of that stuff, I would say I probably wouldn't have it anytime soon again. Overall this place is fun to chill. It's a nice coronatime activity. The views here aren't that great but at least they've got good vibes!

Really tasty wines and a beautiful location. Fantastic tasting session - you get to try all the wines for only $15! The owner's daughter was very personable and knowledgeable about their wines and wine growing. Highly recommended!

A last minute break on a day of making the rounds through groceries and appointments. As they popped on the map, we decided we had to make a brief stop. The winery is sitting on a woodsy, almost dreamy landscape that leads to a welcoming facility built and maintained with a museum like affect. The wine list here is populated with mostly robust reds and a shorter variety of whites that also remain on the drier side (a welcome list for us). The crew was friendly, informative and interactive - offering options to enjoy the wines as they are or how to explore them in pairings. It was a great visit and we look forward to another stop =)

Amalthea Winery - one of the best ones in South Jersey
    Jeff H.

Amalthea Winery is a good example of the progress South Jersey winemaking is undergoing. Some serious wines are being produced here that have won critical acclaim and are served up in several local restaurants. The environment at Amalthea is part of its charm. It's located down a country road in the middle of South Jersey in an old Victorian farmhouse with an Austrian Alpine balcony added on. Next to the vineyards is a second house used for a classroom and special tastings. Everyday tastings take place in the main house and afterwards you can further enjoy wine (and any food you have brought along) at a table down in their wine cellar. Amalthea is one of the 79 moons of Jupiter and indeed many of the wines are named after moons of Jupiter. I didn't like all the wines I tasted or have previously tasted but I have enjoyed several of the drier ones (both white, rose, and red). Cabernet Franc is usually not a standalone grape but here it is in a flavorful medium-bodied dry red. On the white wine side, their Petit Chablis is dry, smooth and I would think a perfect accompaniment to any fish dinner. Their Europa wine series are Amalthea's signature wines and are quite popular.(Order early!) On the other hand the two times I have tasted their Cantina wines sold in a large jug with a tap, I have not found them to my liking at all. I would recommend sticking with the bottled dry wines and in doing so I think you will be glad to have been introduced to this fine local winery!

A wonderful hidden gem!! Maybe the best winery in New Jersey--a little out of the way, but worth the drive! Friendly and knowledgeable staff and amazing wine!

A "bladder" of delicious red wine. 5 bottles worth for $42. Very good deal and refills are even cheaper.

This is a great little hidden gem of a winery. The staff are incredibly sweet, the grounds are on the smaller side but pretty, and the wine is excellent. It's relaxing to come here and sit outside on a nice day and enjoy a few glasses of wine with friends. From what I could tell it's dog friendly, which is always cool in my book. The have as nice indoor space/ tasting area as well along with plenty of parking. I'll definitely be going back. It was a nice change of pace to hang out at a winery on a nice Saturday afternoon and have it not be totally packed with people.

After hearing the "New Jersey Wine" episode of "Planet Money" on NPR (http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2013/03/15/174430619/episode-444-new-jersey-wine) I became interested in checking out this winery. Started by Lou Caracciolo in the 70's, this former potato farm is now putting out wine meant to compete with wines from France. I clocked about an hour and forty five minutes (with mild traffic) from Elizabeth, NJ, so add on about another half hour if you're coming from Manhattan. Once you're on the Turnpike the drive is very straight forward. On the way you'll pass through towns with several stores including Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Cracker Barrel. It's a nice drive and not complicated at all. When you arrive, you pull down a gravel road and park where you can, there is no "lot". You head into a small, charming stone house and there is the main greeting area and cash register. There is a book with articles about the winery, antique tools and machinery and even a small gift shop. The tasting room is to the left and it is wonderfully intimate. There's a small bar and I'd say about six people could stand there and enjoy the tasting without a problem. The young lady who took us through the tasting was super nice and patient. I may be remembering wrong but I think her name was Kate (apologies, it's been a couple weeks). For the low price of $3/person, my girlfriend and I did the "Semi-Sweet Wines" tasting and even got to try a couple bonus wines in the process. We were provided with a list of wines with brief descriptions, prices and provided with pencils to take notes. Please keep in mind I'm no wine expert, but I did want to provide highlights of some of the wines I tried: TRAMINETTE: Very light. Notes of white tea and spice (more the former than the latter). This would be great with food. VIDAL BLANC: A sweeter wine that has melon notes. It's not super sweet though. I had this with friends as part of an Asian Fusion meal and it worked perfectly. CALLISTO BLANC: Fruity with a honey like note. This one I would drink alone, almost as a dessert wine (but it's not as sweet as say, a port). PINO GRIGIO: Very rounded in flavor. Sweet but not one note. It's light enough to drink with food but it's also sweet enough to drink on its own. As a visitor, you can also see the wine cellar (which was cool to see) and walk the grounds to see the vines. They haven't quite grown out yet as I write this, but I imagine by mid-summer it will be a very impressive sight! I had a wonderful time at Amalthea and definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a winery experience in NJ. For the record, I wound up buying bottles of all the wines listed above and a few more (including the Europa 1).

They do have food onsite which they get from Summit Catering -- at the time of our visit (February 2025), we got the flatbread, cheeseboard, mac & cheese bites, and baked brie.
