What a gem! My son was given some old computer parts by a neighbor and wanted to rebuild it to make a gaming PC. Our knowledge was limited and we were overwhelmed in finding info online as to what we needed. We came here hoping to get some answers, and everyone we spoke to was so knowledgeable and willing to go the extra mile in looking up stuff and explaining what they found. Our sales guy DJ was especially helpful and spent a ton of time with us. In the end, we learned that it was cheaper to just start fresh and probably go with a prebuilt, but not once did we feel pressured to buy anything. Once we save up a bit, we'll be back to get a prebuilt, and this is now our go-to store for any computer needs. read more

Looking for something equillavent to microcenter without the heavy traffic to get there? Well you've stumbled upon it, actually I accidently found it and with glee. What is the difference between Micro center and a Fry's store or even a Best buy? Well here they have more of the technical products here that is more geared to the electronic/computer enthused individual. Where Fry's, Best Buy, Circuit City, Target and Walmart electronic centers leave off is where this place picks up. Extensive items such as video cards, mother boards, memory, Fluke testers, adaptors for your computer gadgets that need to be converted over, blank media, surveillance systems and cameras, notebooks and much more. If you are an IT professional or a do it yourself person, this is your playground. Staff are very friendly. I did not get to ask anything since I was only browsing and knew what I was looking at but I could hear them in the background and all through out the store their attitude in their voice on how eager they were to help other people. read more

Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. They carry gaming items so we frequent their business. The attached photo is my bf's gaming build. Some of the equipment has come from Altex. The clear and white case/thing was acquired from Altex. It was very affordable and valuable since overheating is an issue the bf experienced with his smaller build. My only criticism is the limited selection of electronics, however, the buying and browsing experience is very nice (unlike microcenter which is a nightmare to drive to and there's almost no space to move around). I called to get the price on a particular item and to find out if they had it in stock. The guy who I was talking to looked up the price for me, said "well I'm sure we do," when I asked him if they had it in stock. I explained I didn't want to drive 30 minutes if they didn't have it in, and asked him to physically verify. He refused and again, "sir, I'm sure we have it." Guess what they didn't have when I arrived, I wasted 60 minutes of my life driving round trip because of some lazy commission based bum of a salesman who didn't want to walk and verify it for me. When I got to the store the actual customer service was equally as terrible. They will NOT price match their competitors, not even local ones like Frys Electronics or Micro Center. Which I recommend the extra drive to visit either of them over this place. Not only will they not price match, but in comparison they are typically higher on prices than any other local or online retailer. I don't understand how everytime I go in, the store is so dead and the service is so terrible. It seems that anyone there is completely lazy. I have a business account with them. Some of the sales people will give me a "business discount on some items, and others won't on the very same item. Obviously these folks are paid on commissions, because they will practically fight over you if they see you heading for a register with a cart full. I wish one of the other retailers would build near Cypress, heck even Best Buy has better service and prices than these guys. read more

I have been coming here for several years and have bought several racks, equipment and screws. Today I needed help with rack mounting some new equipment and finding out the screws and brackets that I needed but could not get the assistance I needed. The guy that was helping me didn't really care about what I needed so I left my basket of merchandise on the front register and walked out. I went to Altex after visiting Best Buy, Staples, and Office Depot looking for a computer. I wanted something that could run graphic heavy games and do all my graduate school work . . . I like to pretend I have free time. I was greeted quickly, shown what they had, and left alone to play and explore. When I made a choice, I got help quickly again. I was a little depressed because they only had the floor model of the laptop I wanted. The price was good though and I had 30 days to take it back if needed. read more

Altex is anything but a typical computer store. If you're looking for a great deal on a notebook, you'll be disappointed, but you need to build a server, set up a security camera system, or cable your own home theater installation, you're in the right place. Finding a 50' HDMI cable in Houston under $200 incredibly difficult, but you'll find it here for less than half of that, along with every cable, adapter, or splitter you could ever need. Prices are very competitive and you can save a bit of money or get better build quality than what you'd find from the average contractor. The store is a dream for HT installers, IT professionals, and DIYers,and the staff tend to leave shoppers alone for the most part. The salespeople are actually very friendly and knowledgeable, but seem to assume everyone works in the tech or electrical trade, so if you need help, you're better off to come and ask for it. read more

A client's server power supply batteries are on their last leg, so I call around town. No one in the area has any in stock but Altex. The person I called went online to find out the specs on the power supply (I didn't know as I was called offsite when issue occured), and told me they had the batteries in stock. Unfortunately I didn't write the item # but was told to come in and they'll look it up for me. So I make a 15 mile trip a week later and am greeted by probably the oldest rep at the store, who just told me: "tough luck, here are out batteries, if you can find what you need". When I said I didn't have the exact model but we can look it up online as specs are listed by manufacturer he flat out refused. Considering that the previous sales rep. went out of his way to find out what type of battery and this one went out of his way to lose a sale, I guess the lesson is that you have to find your guy and deal with him. From now on, unless it is a last resort, I am taking my business elsewhere. No wonder the parking lot looks pretty empty for most of the day. read more

Went in looking for replacement computer parts and their price was a good bit over the manufacturers own msrp. I looked up other local businesses and they all had the same item well below Altex's price. After finding an associate I asked if they price match local businesses or even the actual manufacturer of the part and they said no. Shocked, I asked, so you'd rather me go to bestbuy and lose the sale? They shrugged and said sorry we cant help. I then asked for a manager and the person replied with they're just going to tell you the same thing, and walked away. I'm more shocked than anything that customer service could be this bad. read more
